We weren't quite sure whether visits could be accommodated but having been directed by one of the shop owners we stepped into this oasis in the middle of a super busy area of town.
We had a wonderful guide who showed us through the mosque and explained the way of worship in a practical and interesting way.
Definitely a highlight on our trip to Durban.

My hubby abd I took a walking tour through the CBD to get to know out City better. We met abguide at Durban Tourism centre opposite The Workshop & learnt abput Durban's history & some architecture. 1 of the most interting was the Juma Masjid, please note its Grey street Mosque and not West street as titled. The staff at the society were knowledgeable and allowed both men and women to enter the mosque and pay respects. This will be etched in my mind forever...

I went to the west street mosque two months back. I could feel the positive vibes. It was so peaceful and the voice of people reciting the holy Quran made the ambiance surrealistic.

Since I enjoy visiting mosques during my travels, I asked my tour guide, Bheki, to include a visit here when we were going to be at the Indian Street market. It was not prayer time and the mosque was closed yet after we waited a few minutes, the caretaker appeared and took us in and showed us around. It was a very peaceful, serene place and worth seeing.

I visited the grey street mosque for religious prayers. The building has lots of history in it and is certainly a place worth visiting.

An interesting and informative tour that gives insight into the religious world of Muslims and aspects of their culture. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. Fascinating!

West Street Mosque è una bella, antica e grande moschea nel cuore di Durban ma l insicurezza al suo esterno è spaventosa.
Tutti che toccano, tutti che chiedono soldi, la strada da fare per raggiungerla non è per nulla sicura e parecchio sporca.
La Moschea al suo interno invece si presenta ordinata, pulita e un oasi di tranquillità.
Consiglio la visita solo se siete in zona.

We were visiting the neighborhood. We are not Muslim but a member asked us to come in, and showed us where we could watch prayers. It's huge and beautiful. A wonderful gesture.

It was a short visit, but it was really pleasant and peaceful inside. Really large, which you wouldn't think naturally. Very well designed and fits into the surroundings. Not to far from the beach, so is within easy access.

Asalaamu Alaikum: I wanted to know if women are allowed to pray at the Masjid? I am asking because the last time that I was in SA, I noticed that some Masjids did not allow women. Insha Allah, I am planning to come to Durban in March, and wanted to make sure..
