We went to La Catédral for a tango lesson and the social dancing afterwards. Someone else who reviewed the club said that it is very informal. This is a euphemism. It is old and grotty and kind of falling apart. It’s in an old church and the floors are crumbling. When you enter, you really do wonder if you’re in the right place. But with that said, it feels really authentic and local. The teachers are skilled and welcoming. It cost 1000 ARS for a lesson and the social dancing afterwards was free. They sell drinks at the bar. I agree that I wouldn’t eat the food.

As a solo traveler, I was nervous about throwing myself into lessons for this complex dance style without a partner but the instructor was so warm! Was a basic English speaker and could generally teach me as a result, very patient. After, feel free to hop over to the adjacent room for a STEAL on seeing the real tango by the tried and tested locals.

Lieu très original où des particuliers et des professionnels viennent s’entraîner à danser le tango. On peut manger également ou boire un verre. À faire quand on est en Argentine impérativement. Vu nulle part ailleurs dans le monde

1h30 de cours pour un prix accessible.
Différentes pédagogies en fonction du prof mais toujours beaucoup de bonne humeur et des vraies astuces pour se couler dans la peau d’un(e) danseur/se dé tango le temps d’un soir!

Fui una vez más a este lugar extraordinario. Viaje desde Chile y le mostré este lugar a mi mujer quien ya conocía el salón Canning y la Viruta y nunca más dejamos de ir a La Catedral
Creo que es un lugar para verdaderos Tangueros y bohemios no hay glamour pero hay verdadero ambiente de Tango. El profe que da las clases un capo, guitarrista y tanguero posta, el ambiente no es para pelotudos que se creen la muerte, en la Catedral hay humildad y calidad, con muebles reciclados, buenos precios, y buen espectáculo. Yo Eugenio lo recomiendo Para quienes pretendan vivir el Tango como fue en sus orígenes,
Conocí y hablé mucho de Tango con el profesor a quien ya había visto en un documental que se titula " Tango un giro extraño"

El lugar es horrible, sucio e incomodo. Menos mal que pusieron otro piso arriba del que ya estaba por que hasta hace poco tiempo no se podía bailar de los agujeros que había en el piso. No se como la municipalidad no lo clausuró.

We had a great time learning the first approach to tango. Very informal setting. Like in VERY informal. I definitly would not be eating there, but the dancefloor and the other people were very nice. And there was a nice combination of beginners and some who knew more, so it was actually possible to learn something. It made me want to learn more about the tango. Be prepared to change partners a lot.
The sound system collapsed, but by magic they fond a couple that played guitar and sang - and that was a wonderful experience. What a voice, and what a mood!

Pretty cool place, really eclectic decor and art, cheap wine and plenty of space for dancing - lots of beginners and lessons going on when we were there which was entertaining and felt pretty inclusive, would recommend a visit!

Para assistir um tango e arriscar um passos fora da rota turistica, tem que ir em La Catedral, no bairro de Almagro, coração do tango! Vale pedir a cerveja artesanal :)

On weekday's night the club was relatively empty what also means there was a lot of space to dance. Tango music was rather modern what was not proper for us but then it changed and it was okay. There was a small performance of small band was a welcomed break. Worth to try!

Is it worth going here on a Saturday or Sunday night? If so what time does the dancing start? Unfortunately we missed the chance to go on Friday

Well, Sunday is best at La Viruta.
Wed-Sat are good a La Catedral. Classes are usually at 8 (20:00)
Milonga begins at 10(22) and get going around 12 (0)

We certainly didn't need Spanish to get in the door and hang out. Pretty sure the classes here are taught in Spanish, but dance is a universal language, so my guess is you could even take a dance class without knowing much Spanish. Also, LOTS of Argentinians speak English. THis was a young crowd, so I bet lots of them would be able to help. GOod luck!
