Great tour guide w/Pink Jeep tours...Rick knows the area and knows the history and the flora and fauna. Very bumpy ride the last 10 miles...buckle up and hold on. Furnished walking sticks were helpful. Plenty of time to see the ruins and pictographs, and take photos. Evening tour is spectacular w/the lighting on the red rocks from the setting sun. Get there before Memorial Day to beat the crowds.

We went with Pink Jeep Tours to the Honaki site. The drive to the site was on a dirt road but not super bumpy and only a bit dusty. If you don't go with a tour group, there is a $5 fee to enter the area. Short dirt path to the cliff dwelling site. I was impressed how close you could get to site. We enjoyed learning a bit about the people who built the dwellings but not much is known about them. Impressive people who lived in the area. There were pictographs as well. Definitely worth the trip but I'm not sure if you could do the drive without a jeep or vehicle with high clearance. Also, many gorgeous red rock mountains in the area.

We’re out 4 wheeling in the Jeep after hiking Robber’s Roost, cut across Outlaw UTV trail to check it out.
If you are headed down 525 on this one, you should def have a jeep as it’s pretty far back on rough roads.
Nice side stop and they had a retired couple as docents who were VERY knowledgeable on the different native tribes that occupied the site over the centuries. Lots of petroglyphs & pictographs to view.
If you DONT have a 4x4, try Palatki ruins instead

The trail to the ruins was pleasant. The graffiti on the walls was terrible and while not the forest service fault, I thought they could have been removed to some extent.

This attraction is not difficult to reach but the road leading to it is an interesting ride at times. The hike to the site is short and not difficult but do wear comfortable shoes, a bit of climb is required.

My husband and I toured this site while visiting the Sedona area. The road to get here is very rough but we were able to make it easily in our Jeep Wrangler. Once you get there the trail is relatively short and easy to navigate. I think it took way longer to get to the trail than to actually walk it. There were a few people on the trail the day we went but we were able to social distance.

This not a large historic site. If you have done Palatki, you will want to do this as well. It is not so much with the petroglyphs as Palatki, but more with the living spaces. Easy hiking. Tough on the car to get here.

SO incredibly cool. To think that the structures that remain were put there by human hands almost 1000 years ago! Cool ride out in the RZR, amazing time there, and another really cool ride back. SO worth it!!

We toured Honanki using the Pink Jeep Tours. I would strongly recommend not trying to drive it yourself unless you have an off-road vehicle. The canyon is beautiful and the ancient ruins incredible to see.

An awesome sight to see, with a short trail to walk to it. Do not recommend driving to it in your own vehicle. Take the pink jeeps, are rent a jeep, or rent an atv. The road to it once you leave the pavement is horrible; don't take a car.

Hello, We are visiting the Sedona area for the first time next month. We will be in the area for 5 days and hope to hike and hit the area highlights. I am trying to decide if the ruins in this area should be included. We spent time exploring Mesa Verde 2 summers ago, including ranger led hikes to several of the cliff dwellings. I am wondering how these ruins compare and if my kids will appreciate them as much as the experience at Mesa Verde. Any advice will be helpful. Thank you.

These ruins are nothing like Mesa Verde as far as the number of dwellings. There are only, say, about 15-20 chambers or rooms. These are a little more remote, but that is part of the fun, is renting a 4-wheeled vehicle and getting here. There are no "ranger led tours" at Honanki, but is rather self guided. What I find more interesting about Honanki is that you hike right up to them yourself, and the number of petroglyphs that you can see. There are many drawings on the walls of the rock formation where these dwellings are located. And, unlike one TripAdvisor reviewer wrote, they are not "free" as you are suppose to buy a Red Rock Pass to have displayed on your vehicle, which is very cheap for the week, like $15.00 bucks. Again, nothing like Mesa Verde, but unique nonetheless and offers up close views of the ancient art and drawings.

Are small dogs allowed on this hike?

I don’t know for sure, but I have not seen dogs in several visits to Honanki. Moreover, check before you go. I believe it was closed last week due to COVID crisis, AZ is starting to open up this week.
My friend cannot walk long distances. Is this a tour she could enjoy?

Agree with all the other responders...much depends of your friend's condition, the weather and how badly your friend wishes to see the village ruins.
