We drove the Apache Junction Trail up to Tortilla Flat which was as far as we could go during our trip in June, 2022. However, you MUST take the scenic drive up to this cool little town! We strongly recommend you try the prickly pear sorbet and gelato. They were both delicious! Take the time to tour the little white museum (looks like an old school house) to learn about the history of the town.

You can do better with your time and money...read on...
Tortilla Flat is a combination restaurant, mercantile (shop), museum, ice cream shop, retail store, and bar with RV/camping sites that sits on an old stagecoach rest area from the late 1800's. It is set out in the desert mountains near canyon lake and far enough from town that you feel you've gone into the old west a bit. The mountains and lake are beautiful. It seems great in concept for a visit and...you do get some old west flare (even if much of it is set up). THAT IS THE GOOD NEWS!
The bad news is, it's just a tourist trap. They will overcharge you for everything (since there are no other options available).
I've lived in AZ over 10 years and visited Tortilla Flat only a half dozen times. Every time I end up leaving disappointed saying I won't go back (apparently I find a way to give them another shot every year of so). Our last visit today (Mothers Day 2022) was bad. We are finally done and won't go back after earing at the restaurant.
1. The restaurant atmosphere is dark and not clean (sticky tables). There are handwritten dollar bills all over the walls. That decor is somehow supposed to be inclusive of the patrons but looks bad, seems old, and looks nasty (especially when EVERY wall is covered in dollar bills).
2. The food is below average. Anyone can make a big burrito filled with very little meat and all the cheapest fillings (black beans and white rice) then smother it with cheap nasty nacho cheese sauce and call it a BIG Burrito (I'm talking about the Pistolero Burro). IT WAS BIG...but it was bad. There was no meat taste at all.
3. Prices: Holy Cow. $3.75 for soda water??? Seriously, I ordered two soda waters for my wife and it (which is usually FREE) and the waitress never mentioned they charge $3.75 per glass for an endless beverage. The waitress never even came back to fill our glasses a 2nd time. Then, what was a $15.00 burrito (previously mentioned) ended up costing $18.00 because they charge $3.00 for a thimble full of guac?? My, my, my...things don't add up. My meal cost $50.00 before tip for 1 burrito, 2 glasses of water, 2 kids meals (burger + fries and corn dog + fries...NO DRINK) for $8.59 each and then I paid $3.00 more for two kids sodas. $50.00!!!! Not even inflation can explain that when $7.00 of the cost was soda water.
4. Service: The manager approached us after our meal asking what went wrong. We explained the cost and hidden charges (really being unhappy with being charged $7.00 for soda water) and she just nodded her head. We told her about the terrible service from our waitress and she replied that she knew that waitress was having a bad day. She really didn't apologize other than offering to get our kids free ice cream. We said no and moved on.
5. Hey, at least parking is still free.
You can get a better wild west experience going to the Lost Dutchman mining town. You can definitely get better food for a lower price anywhere in the Phoenix Valley.
It's sad. I hadn't written a review in a while but feel compelled to drop this one. I started at a 2-star rating, I dropped it to 1-star after writing this review.
Please get better with your service, pricing, and overall experience Tortilla Flat.

Beautiful scenic lake drive to Tortilla Flat! Find your wall space and add a dollar 💵 to the wall of dollar’s at Superstitious Saloon which is adorned in fascinating “wall art.” Ladies check out the art work in the bathroom stalls . Closes at 6 pm so enjoy the sunset 🌅 and drive safely-lots of curves.

Bit too touristy but the setting within the landscape is wonderful, lots of saguaros and tumbleweeds, exudes history despite the tourist ghost town tag

Superstition Saloon was a fun place to eat. We both had the BBQ & stringed onion burger. It was excellent! It was the perfect combination of barbecue sauce and onion on a toasted potato bun roll! The secret to getting a seat is to go right when it opens! We had no problem getting a place to park or immediate seating. By the time we were done with our meal, there was a line with an hour wait. Main Street got very crowded, very quickly so we were glad to wrap up our visit. The meal and ambiance is definitely worth the wait.

I was told that when I go to Tempe I need to go to Tortilla Flat. I love history and old things so this was a great find. The drive was breath-taking and a must do even if you do not like old towns. The parking was minimal for a one street town. It had some shops, a museum, restaurant, ice cream and scenery. We did not eat so I can not tell you about that. The buildings were old. The scenery old and beautiful. I was with others, but would loved to have gone hiking. Even if you do not like tourist like places, you should stop. It is a little gem, an old west town. People still live here. And the View is amazing. So glad we stopped.

This is the fun, off the beaten path kind of place my husband and I search out. Our friend, a native of Tempe had never been so he went along. It’s a beautiful drive up the mountain, then down into Tortilla Flat, population of 6!!! Not to be missed. Yes it’s touristy…. That’s the fun in it! Original one room school house, now a museum, a silly reenactment of a gun fight, couple of gift shops….. nice things. The best part is the restaurant with authentic theme, dollar bills on every wall from past visitors, ladies room you’ve got to see and outside live music!!! We had a bite to eat and a drink and then got to enjoy the drive back.

Is the road there extremely curvy? How long is the drive from apache junction?

It's not a drive for the weak. Seriously, it's a lot longer than you would think and it WILL take you a long time. I would allot twice the time that Google maps would tell you, simply because the views are so stunning and you will want/need to go slower than you'd plan. (also, you will want to pull over for pics!) It's a really cool turn around spot, too, if you don't want to do the entire Superstition drive.
