This was easy hiking/trekking from Babele to Sfinxul din Bucegi and then via Cabana Piatra Arsă to Cota 2000 up Sinaia. Up to Bebele you can get by the cable car, taxi (taxi drivers hanging around the cable car) or walking up. Babele (meaning The old women) Nice to walk around the Sphinf interesting rock formation . It can be windy there. The tracking to Cabana Piatra on well signed trail easy peasy, mostly flat or going down. You can enjoy stunning views. The second part from Pietra Arsa to Cota 200 is still not difficult and can by easily done with average fitness level. On the way you can sight the Peles castle.

Although because of the snow (March) I could not go up to the high mountains for a hike from Sinaia, but a hike from Sinaia in the lower mountains was very special. I took the blue line from the center of Sinaia and after 30 minutes you really get into nature. The walk from there was up and a very nice one to do. The nature was absolutely stunning. It is a beautiful mountainous forest and animals were present if you see all the tracks. Almost at the top of this "small' mountain there is a viewpoint called Stanca Franz Josef, which gives you an amazing view of mountains and Sinaia. The walk up is about 1-1,5 hour when getting to nature. This is a perfect walk on the edge of the Bucegi mountains and good to combine with Peles and Pelisor Castles as you are almost passing them on the way up and back there.

Visited on a Friday in October 2021. If you want to do a day trip, the train from Brasov to Bucegi takes less than an hour and only costs a couple dollars. We then took the gondola that departs from Bucegi town. Got there in the morning (around 9am), and there were only a couple other people on the cable car. It didn't seem to get very crowded later, either. Prices and times as listed on the website teleferic.ro. Free toilets in the building.
We got information on hiking from a blog called "120 Hiking Trails in Bucegi Mountains", which outlines all the different trails (elevation gain, time, which markings to follow) from each of the different starting points. Spend some time on this while looking at a map to figure out what you want to do. If you are going from the top of the Bucegi cable car (the top is referred to as "Babele" on the cable car website), the rock formations like the Sphinx will be just a few mins' walk away. After that, most people seem to go to the Heroes Cross, and this seemed like a good trail. I think it would be especially good in the hot summer months, since the altitude is quite high. However, we took the Jepi Micii trail (following the blue cross markings from the cable car) down to Bucegi. Keep in mind that this review is from a warm autumn's day. Hiking it in the summer would probably be quite different.
The Jepi Micii trail was absolutely stunning. One of the most beautiful hikes we have ever done, and that's saying a lot. There are supposedly evergreen trees that have turned yellow in the fall! I didn't think this was possible. The colours were amazing; the views change as you climb down but are just as beautiful at every step.
I recommend hiking down only if you have decent hiking boots, have decent balance, and are in pretty good shape. Climbing gloves are a good idea, but we managed without them. If your knees are anything but in absolutely stellar shape, bring hiking poles. Even if you have great knees, still bring hiking poles if you can. We had to ice and elevate our knees when we got home, and our quads still hurt 5 days later, and we are in our early thirties in good shape. There were at least 10 crosses along the way marking the places where people had perished doing this trail, and we could see why. It's not an easy trail. Every step has to be planned. There are many sections with chains and ropes to help you over steep and rocky sections. 97% of these chains are properly installed, but the 3% of chains that have detached from the rock can be dangerous. Tug gently on the chain before using it to support your full weight. Watch where you're going. I can't stress this enough. I am not saying this to discourage anyone. I was moved by the beauty of this place, and the trail was actually really fun and left us feeling accomplished. But just prepare adequately and know what you are getting into. It took us 5-6 hours from top to bottom.
If you choose to hike UP this trail, it is going to be VERY exhausting, I think. Hiking down was steep and there were very few flat spots to rest. So if you go up, prepare to go up constantly and to use the ropes and your hands to climb up sometimes, too. It will almost certainly be less scary though, since you will be securely facing the mountain instead of looking down and trying not to slip. I imagine you'd need 3 litres of water per person, which is very heavy, so bring a water filter/purifier, and you can probably refill in the rivers and waterfalls along the way. I don't know how clean the water is (it looked fairly clean, but who knows), so research this properly if you are going to be purifying and drinking any water from there.
If you don't want to spend money on the cable car but still want to see beautiful views and do a fun trail, try hiking up the Jepi Micii (follow the blue cross markings) for an hour or two and then hiking back down. The trailhead will be in Bucegi town, at the end of Strada Telecabinei. There is an information board when you get there so you'll know you're in the right place.
Can't recommend this trail enough!!

The views here are stunning. As a visitor from the UK be prepared to switch off the usual expectations of ‘health & safety’ - in Romania you actually have to look for hazards and avoid them yourselves, so don’t expect numerous barriers and fencing etc.!
To get here you first have a choice of driving to a parking area called Cabana Piatra Arsa and walk from there, or catching the Cable car at the bottom of the mountain. Before you choose the cable car, check out the reviews on here.
We parked and walked, about an hour and you get to the rocks at Barbele. Views are fantastic and from this location you can see the cable car (and how old and rusty it all looks!). We found this part quite busy due to those getting off of the cable car here.
The real adventure starts when you decide to walk from here to Crucea de pe Caraiman (the heroes cross at the top of the mountain that can be seen all around for miles). There are some well marked routes with posts - Red Cross is the slightly easier route and the blue cross and then blue dot the harder and scary route! These routes can be researched online prior to going.
We took the scary route!! Now again, being from the UK, you really don’t expect that here you actually have to engage brain and think and look out for yourself. Who would have thought I would be responsible for where I place my feet! There are parts of this route that are a literal several inches of rock and gravel and nothing other than your sound foot placement and some old chain someone has bolted into the rock to grab hold of, between you and a heart-stopping void to certain oblivion. Yet there are young children and old people all clambering along without issue. The views are jaw-dropping.
When you eventually reach the cross you realise it is worth the effort. It is a huge and very sturdy monument, even more magnificent close up.
We took the ‘easy’ route back!
Personally, I would never consider doing this in any season other than summer. Check the weather before you go. Take plenty of water and remember to hydrate (no toilets but plenty of crevices, rocks and bushes to crouch behind!). Take energy bars or other food with you also. Lots of suncream and wear decent walking shoes. Most of all, if you take the scary route, you are actually responsible for your safety - grab hold of the chain and think about where your foot goes - and on those bits probably best not to look behind you!
An amazing if scary and tiring experience. Highlight of the holiday.

This is a destination worth visiting while you are in Romania. Sure, it might take a while to get up there, but it is worth the wait. The view is fascinating and the Sfinx and Babele are the highlights of the visit. Amazing experience, definitly recommend it.

The babele was a great aventura. I recommend everybody have the mountains equipamment because the weather changes quickly in one hour you can have “3 season “. The gondola was a little bit “old” and the price was 170 RON for up and down

Went to take the cable car from Busteni to Babele. Unfortunately, due to Covid pandemia, the number of tourits in the cable car is limited so you have to wait more to get on the top. siting in the que we were approached by pesons offering a car tour to the mountins including a view point at 1000m, Bolboci dam, the ialomita cave and small churchan last Babele.
For 5 persons we got a discount and got the price for all tour less than going up and down from Babele by cable car.
I loved the tour, we saw a lot of nice places , the only thing i didn't like was the fact the car stoped and parked before Babel where we should walk for around 50 minutes and other 50 minutes back. This was not said before leaving and for the ender ones it was not possible to be done due to lack of preparations for such long trail and also because was late and not enough time to get back before sunset. we stoped for lunch also at a small restaurant (take water with you as except this palce you don't have from where to buy).
advise: if you take this tour go before 11:00 am to have enough time to go to Babele and if you are not used to hike, then don't expect to see Babele and the Sfinx.

Is it possible to walk from Moieciu de Sus (or Bran) to Busteni (or Peles) across the mountains and if so how long might this take? It would be in April.

From Bucharest the streets are very good.... you should take the highway to Ploiesti, avoid the 50 km limit... :)

Long queues to the Busteni cable car.
We have found a lot of complains that queues to the Busteni cable car are very long.
Could you please elaborate if queues are common issue in August?
Will it help if we will come in the middle of the week (in August)?
Will we be able to approach Sphinx by automobile?
The way suggested by Google is very long around the park (2 hours).
Thank you in advance for your help,
Michael

I see you love riding the bike. :)
Then come here with anything you can, plane or train then rent a bike and go visit the Transfagarasan and the Bucegi mountais. You will have a lot to see.
Regarding the passport or visa, i'm not sure what you need to travel from Ukraine to Romania.

You can rent a car or take a flight from Ukraine to Bucharest. From there the best is to rent a car , drive anywhere in the mountains and start your hiking. You will love it. The view is breathtaking. Enjoy
