Definitely worth a visit. We drove from Sinaia instead of getting the cable car after reading how long people have to wait for the cable car.
The road up is very scenic which is definitely worth stopping at points but the drive is not for anyone who isn't confident with driving. September is a relatively quiet time so the drive wasn't so bad.
You park a bit away from the monastery and you walk up to it. The monastery apparently was burnt down a few times and it was rebuilt in approx 2006 I think. The cave was amazing. I think they should charge more than 10lei for entrance but hey...
Take up on the offer for helmets if you are tall. You will need it.

Very nice and beatiful. But very very steep stairs . They look like ladders! But otherwise the cave system was beatifiul and big and a lovely sight. I had a lot os trouble with the air it felt thick and cold but not enough to kill a star. 5/5

Päätimme käydä tässä luolassa, koska paikka kuulosti mielenkiintoiselta. Paikan päälle menimme vuokra-autollamme. Pitkästi saa kyllä ajaa kauniissa vuoristossa (pahoinvointi voi yllättää kiemuraisella tiellä) ja onnistuimme vielä valitsemaan sen huonomman tien loppumatkaksi (järkyttävää kurakkoa ja kuoppia). Muistakaa valita padon luona tie, joka kiertää patoallasta oikealta puolelta.
Ihan loppumatka pitää kävellä, mutta matka ei ole pitkä ja mielestäni polku oli hyvä. Luonto ympärillä oli ainakin alkukesästä kaunista ja vuoripuro solisi kirkkaana.
Luolan suulla on pieni kirkko tai luostari ja siinä ostetaan sisäänpääsyliput. Kypärät kannattaa ottaa päähän, koska paikka paikoin oli matalia kohtia, joissa helposti lyö päänsä luolan seinämiin. Aika pitkästi saa kulke vielä luolan sisällä, jotta lopulta löytyy putous. Putous löytyy oikealle menevästä reitistä, vasemmalta pääsee isoon onkaloon. Me kävimme molemmissa.
Luolassa on viileää ja kosteaa, eikä paikka sovi runsaitten rappujen takia kaikille. Me kaikki kuitenkin pidimme reissua hyvänä ja koululaisemme varsinkin nautti luolakokemuksestaan.

came to Ialomicioara Monastery and Cave by chance. Did not know anything about it except that the way there is beautiful. I loved every part of it. We ended up having to take the long route of 30+ km of dirt road. The asphalt road was being fixed at the time. But it turned out to be a great journey to get there, then, to walk through the beautiful forest and finally, to see the beauty of the cave. Most caves I have been to, weren't lit like this one. The water fall in the cave was fantastic (a small fall) and finally the story of the monastery and the site of the beautiful wall paintings. I would love to visit again!

I thought i's a tiny little cave but it's actually quite big!
It's a very safe cave with plenty of handrails.

Easy trip to this location. We have a holly ortodox church built in the cave. The surrounding areas are faboulos.

Ехали к нему долго, хотя находится близко;) дорога которая ведёт к этому месту, подходит для одной машины. Поэтому разъехаться там - проблема. Приходится тормозить, пропускать. Но сама пещера интересная. Длинная, много ступеней вверх и вниз, но нам было не тяжело.

Jechaliśmy zobaczyć jaskinię i monastyr ulokowany w niej po zwiedzaniu zamku Pelesz. I myślałem, ze nic nie jest w stanie dorównać wrażeniom, jakie mieliśmy po obejrzeniu zamku. I tu nastąpiła pomyłka. Dojazd mimo że jest to niewiele kilometrów od Sinai trwał 1,5 godziny. Ale tereny górskie jakie mijaliśmy wynagradzały nam tę podróż. Gdy przybyliśmy na miejsce jeszcze musieliśmy podejść 1 km ścieżką wzdłuż górskiego potoku. Na konie drogi ukazał się wspaniały klasztor. Po przekroczeniu bram naszym oczom ukazał się wciśnięty w wejście do jaskini monastyr. I to nie koniec. Bo po obejrzeniu jego wnętrza czekała nas jeszcze podróż po jaskini, na końcu której był ukryty podzielny wodospad ze źródełkiem wodnym. Coś pięknego!

No tour of this country is complete without wondering in the mysterious Ialomicioara Cave. The entire area is well kept and will surely impress any traveller who dares to go inside. From underground waterfalls to ancient fossils, this attraction is guaranteed to have something for everyone

I believe I read that one can get to the cave/monastery by cable car. Is that from Sinaia or Busteni? Thanks for any info!

You have to take the cable car from Busteni - Babele to then Babele - Pestera. Then you have to walk 1 km to the cave/monastery.

We will be at Ialomicioara Monastery and Cave from 7 to 11 December we would like to know if it will be open for a winter visit. There is an email?

I haven't been able to find any official sites for the cave or monastery that would list hours and days of operation. I guess the best thing to do is go to the visitors' center in Busteni as soon as you arrive and ask. Dress warm as it will be very cold in the area and the visit of the cave can last 1 to 2 hours.

My wife and I are visiting Romania in September 2016. We will not have a car. Should we stay in Sinaia for a couple of nights? Is there enough to do? Should we just go from Bucharest to Brasov and do day trips? The cave monastery is at teh top of the cable car..right? Did you see the Sphinx rocks?
Anything else we should know about Romania please feel free to educate us.

I would recommend at least one night in Sinaia.
Very nice town.
If you do not have a car you can go up the mountain with the cable car.
The landscape is amazing.
But I think you should take a trip with a local driver who travels with you in all of the important sites in the area.
You can get such a driver, close to the cable car building.
He will take you up the mountain, to an amazing lake named Bolboci .
Amazingly beautiful place and a shame to miss.
He will also take you to the cave and wait for you outside.
At the end you can also ask him to take you to Castelul Peleş.
Very nice place not to be missed !!!!!!
The whole trip takes about 4 to 5 hours and is inexpensive.

Hello,
Is taking the cable car the best way to get to "Lalomicioara" ?
I will have a rental car, but not even sure if driving there is an option.
I am not having a lot of luck finding much information directions, times it is open etc.
Any information you have, or could point me to, would be greatly appreciated.

I drove there but I'm a Romanian and the roads are kind of narrow and bumpy here and there but they are paved roads so it is your decision ( I would recommend the cable car). From the cable car it is easy to find it and it takes only 20 min. walk.
Visiting hours are 9:00 - 18:00 Tue-Sun. Monday is closed.
