This is a very fashionable, peaceful and interesting museum to look at for a point of interest but that it’s fairly small looking around here doesn’t last that long that’s the only thing it’s a tiny little Musuem and there’s just not quite enough to spend time here. But apart from that it’s beautifully historical as well with the props and older things you see here so it’s great look at this place for history and obvious discovery.

Excellent collection of artefact. Don't expect a slick curated experience but a great array of objects from a surprisingly wide variety of periods

What a gem! We thought we would kill time and spend half an hour here but what a find! Bursting with local history as well as the more obscure. The different sections went on and on and the lovely lady on reception was wonderful. Would definitely recommend.

First of all... What a fantastic well kept museum.
Helpful friendly volunteers/staff, I've lived near Saffron Walden for 10+ years and didn't know this was here.
The exhibits are very informative and I could easily of spent 3-4 hours looking and reading the information provided.
So much stuff to look at, great for all ages!!
We will definitely be back..
We popped in on a Saturday afternoon.

We are huge fans of provincial museums. They have collections of objects that have just accumulated as benefactors have blessed them. This had it all, stuffed birds and animals, local flora and fauna, rocks clothes, neolithic pottery and a great story about a piano hiding gold sovereigns for years. Complete with a mummy and Albert the Lion - what more could you want? Great way to while away an hour or two.

This is a brilliant museum. There are a lot of different objects/artefacts on display. They are well set out and have good details and information about them. The museum doesn’t appear that big from the outside but is so well laid out and a real pleasure to go round. Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy all it has to offer.
The museum staff are great too. Friendly and helpful and add to a lovely experience. If you are in the area do go and take a look around,

We came specifically to see the Lion Wallace who was partly the inspiration for the old Lion and Albert poem but found the whole museum a delight. The Natural history section was a highlight with the model showing natures food chains nicely and the Victorian workroom was fascinating. Also mention should go to the Egypt section as although small the theme was great. Also the piano was a nice exhibit. We will be back.

a gem of a place with so much inside to see and enjoy - wish we had given ourselves more time. Someone described it as a Tardis (bigger inside than appears from outside)

An excellent museum with an extensive collection. The local interest section is particularly good, covering habitation, land use, industry and the people of the area. The sections on other parts of the world are fair, and are clearly aimed at teaching school students. A bit of a tardis; bigger inside than it appears from the outside. We needed about 2 hours to look over most of the exhibits.

Does it still have the Dutch Cheese Press?

Dear John,
Thank you for your question.
We are delighted to say that, yes we do still have the Dutch Cheese Press, it is on display in our local history gallery.
It was bought by the museum in 1885 from a sale of old oak at Stansted Hall.

are dogs allowed

All dogs are allowed in the grounds and we have a water bowl at the front door for them.
Service dogs are welcome, but please do not bring pets into the
museum.
