Been past this many times but never had the chance to go in! Today saw this was open and free! So glad I did! Volunteers there were friendly and the information boards set out were very informative but also not full of words my kids would not understand. Highly recommend great little site.

Currently open every other Sunday Apr-Oct. Some interesting bits of equipment and plenty of boards explaining the history of various artifacts. Entry free, with Donations welcomed. Dog friendly but 2 steep staircases - watch out if unsure of foot! Plenty of other small museums and historical buildings nearby which also open for only a small window of time (mainly summer weekends).

From their website with permission.
The Harwich Radio Direction Finding (RDF) Tower was built just before April 1941 and housed one of the earliest applications of RDF. Ten similar sites were built around the UK covering important rivers, docks and harbours. RDF became better known as RADAR around 1943, an American term short for Radio Detecting And Ranging
Peter really brought the subject to life and had nearly all the answers to questions.

The Tower contains a unique very early radar set up, very well explained by the very knowledgeable guide. It's not open very often, but well worth trying to catch it on one of the open days (advertised on the web site). A really interesting visit.

You will go wow when you see the radar array at the top of the tower. Excellent preservation and interpretation of this unique minefield control radar, and an great tour from an enthusiastic volunteer. Combine with Beacon Hill Fort next door

The tower is only open first Sunday of the month, but along with the recently opened Beacon Hill fort is well worth visiting if you’re interested in relatively recent history. Many structures in this area are most ex-WW2, and are in the process of being excavated and opened up, where you can see the old armoury where shells were stored, and huge gun placements, mostly still intact. Don’t expect it to be too slick, but you get to feel a part of it’s re-discovery.

This is (I believe) the last one if its type left in the country and is part of the Harwich war defence department, and the only part of it that is open, well looked after and available to visit as it is another historic site maintained by the Harwich Society. It only costs £1 to visit. It is open on Sundays (check Harwich Society web site for details). Just a short walk along the promenade from Harwich on the way to Dovercourt, the entrance is sign posted along Barrack Lane, it should interest anyone with an interest in naval & local history.

We visited on the last May bank holiday, but I think it is normally open on the last Sunday of the month. Only a £1 to get in and witness a piece of history.
The ceilings are low and there is only a narrow staircase to access the upper floors. The radar antenna is on the top floor. The RF bits are long gone and the reflectors are copies. However, you can see the radar TX frame on the top floor and in the room underneath the yoke that was used to turn the radar to scan it. This was moved by two people!
The RX stations were in small concrete bunkers that you can see if you walk in on the footpath from the Harwich old town side.

Small interesting gem - originally built in 1941 for the development of RDF Type 287 to detect E boats and to protect the harbour. Now contains donated bits and pieces mostly of a naval nature. Apparently under development and hoping for new and some more relevant exhibits. Short visit only and steep metal staircase, but great views out of upstairs windows.
