We are members of English Heritage so our visit was free. we visited here for an afternoon. Lots of information boards and the castle is interesting. Despite not being whole you can go up the stairs and quite a few of the rooms are intact. Lovely views. Good place for a picnic

Many historic ruins can feel detached as access can be somewhat limited or so little remains to truly capture the imagination. Old Wardour Castle, however, invites you in to climb what remains of it staircases and view the landscape from the vantage point of its owners long since gone. The surrounding lawn and grottoes offer up the perfect place for a lunchtime picnic.
Note: as of this writing, the visitor centre was being rebuilt, so available services are reduced in scope but not in quality.

This castle ruin and surrounding land is a hidden gem, and a perfect place for picnic too. You simply must visit and walk through the remains of the castle.

There were very few visitors at 2.30pm on a Thursday so we had the place very much to ourselves.
It is very serene, next to a small lake and surrounded by rhododendron bushes. There are toilets on site but no cafe/snacks and you could probably eat a picnic here and while away some time.
The castle is interesting with some information boards and a few suggestions of games to keep younger children interested. I would have like some more boards to read. My husband bought the guidebook but this was too much information to read/take in while walking around.

It was great walk around the ruins of the ‘castle’ with lots of signs inside and outside talking you through the history of the site.

What we did not realize from photos that we have seen is that you can actually climb up FOUR stories of stone spiral stair cases inside the castle!
The man at the gate was very kind and helpful giving our tour an informative start.

There's enough to keep you interested for a couple of hours. Information panels have been upgraded. Unfortunately the audio tour only worked intermittently which was a shame.

Took a chance on visiting this place and didn't regret it. It was well out of the way but sat nav led us along the windy country roads right to it. It's in the most beautiful setting and there is enough of the castle still intact to allow for lots of exploring and tons of photo opportunities. It is spread over four floors but the climb is not for the fainthearted, especially coming down the winding spiral staircases. There are lots of open areas to enjoy too as well as a huge lake and walks. There is a small shop selling souvenirs and snack foods and public toilets are available too.

Lovey sunny day so visited Old Wardour Castle a bit tucked away but worth the trouble. There are also walks nearby and a lake. The ruined castle and grotto are great fun to explore especially for boisterous children. Welcomed by enthusiastic greeter who pointed out interesting things about the castle and history although there are info board. Great place for a picnic. Toilets and small shop.

It is a tricky journey down narrow lanes to get to this castle but it is well worth it. We thought our grandchildren might be disappointed that it is a ruined castle but in fact they loved clambering up the winding staircases and calling out of the spectacular windows. The views were wonderful across the lake and surrounding countryside and the displays explained how the castle used to look and be used. This week we watched Robin Hood Prince of Thieves film and saw the castle many times as it was used a s a location for the film. There is a calm atmosphere here, with a small shop selling ice creams etc. We had a very enjoyable trip.

Is this castle accesible during the week? Or is it only open on weekends? I have found information on people going during the week but the castles website advises that it's only open on Sat and Sun.

About an hour at the most. There are lots of walks in the woods and space around the castle for kids, dogs or both to run around.

We've never had any problems. Check on the website to see if there are any restrictions. Some of the staircases are really steep and unsuited to dogs. The grounds are great though.

My daughter and I will be in Salisbury in a couple of weeks. We won't have a car; I understand there is a bus that goes to/from Old Wardour Castle. How long is the ride? How often does the bus come?
