‪We visited LW for the Steam-punk weekend. This was quite a modest affair with only a few attractions. However, the cycle Museum was open and this is well worth a visit, free to enter with a donation up to you it is really wonderful with exhibits from the first bike to land speed record cycles. After this we took a walk around LW and although many of the shops are now closed, is has a real Victorian feel to it and so is very interesting. We then found the Rock Park which has wooded walks again created in the Victorian era. Towards the bottom of the park the old Spa Tap Room still exists and is well worth a visit. A tea room is near by for refreshments. Just a few yards from the Tap House is a path down to the only remaining spring. This is a stone with an iron lions head from which runs the spring water. You can sample this and it has a coppery, salty taste to it. Then we walked back to the lake which is very pleasant for picnicking around or you can lunch at the nearby cafe which has nice views of the lake. The area provides a nice relaxed day out and the roads leading to Llandrindod are also a delight to drive by car or motorcycle.‬

‪Having done Cardiff and South Wales we had a night stop and day to kill on our journey to north Wales to see the mountains. In our B&B we picked up a leaflet for this day tour service and opted for a trip around some of the off the beaten track castles along the Welsh/English border to give us a break from driving.

We were collected bang on time in a very impressive 4x4 which gave us great views over the hedges because it was so high off the ground. The first castle was just a vast earthwork (sorry can’t remember the name) but its location was so remote I’m sure the scenery hadn’t changed for 100’s of years.

Before reaching our next castle outside Newtown our friendly guide stopped to give us steaming hot coffee and Welsh cakes which were just the ticket. This castle had many more walls and towers but was even surpassed by Montgomery castle and its fantastic setting. Huw (the guide) showed us around before giving us plenty of time to get lunch in the sleepy market town under the castle.

On again for a quick half pint in the classic Three Tons pub in Bishops Castle where they brew their own beer (don’t worry – Huw knows where all the best toilet stops are) and on to Clun castle – or what’s left of it !

More coffee then our last stop of the day was at a lovely old black and white Church where Huw recalled the story of the day the Welsh beat the English in the field next door 600 years ago. (Being a native Welsh speaker I think he was a little bit biased !).
We were dropped off at our B&B having had a great day out in Mid Wales and seen things not in most guide books – and most of all somebody else did all the driving.

Highly recommended‬

‪My friend and I opted to go on a guided tour with EXPLORE heart of wales at the last minute so we were thrilled to be accommodated at such short notice.

The day formed part of a weeks hiking training for a fundraising trek in Peru and so we wanted to do a good 8 hour day that would help prepare us for our journey.

As beginners in the world of mountaineering we could not have afforded some of the more expensive guided walks in the beacons and so this was an affordable way of us doing some trekking without getting lost in the wilderness!

Our guide was lovely and had clearly put some thought into the route we were taking, which was varied and included some beautiful scenery. His wife joined us for our lunchtime stop and we were treated to homemade goodies and fresh local produce! It felt personal to go out walking with a family run business, rather than a larger tour operator.

The treks are tailored to suit different abilities and interests and would appeal to all different age groups. It would also be a good activity day for small organisations or interest groups.

Finally, I would definitely recommend the tour group to fellow Londoners like myself, looking for a weekend escape from the city that won't break the bank and that you can do without having to hire a car.‬
