Terrible the staff are very rude unhelpful and their policies put you in danger there are much better gyms in the area like friends and allies don't waste your money

My 11 year old arrived to join friends at City Rock. Great facility. Poor staff. It cost R130 to enter and another R100 for a harness and compulsory shoes. I had to sign a lengthy waiver / indemnity form and then my som was handed a harness.
We were left with no instruction while 2 young guys stood at the entrance counter. I helped my son into his harness but it didn’t look right so I asked one of the guys at the desk if he could please check. He said we had put it on incorrectly (thank goodness I checked!) and took it off, tightened it and helped my son put it on and then he went back behind the reception desk.
After buying some water I walked over to my son, only to find him half way up a wall. There were signs all over saying something like “important safety - have you fastened your clips securely?” I realized no one had given my son a safety briefing, or any instruction on how to clip on and fasten the carabena, etc. or which walls are for adults and which are for children 12 and under etc.
I went back to the reception desk to ask if there should have been some instruction and was told there are staff on the floor to help. I told the guy that I hadn’t seen anyone and no one had told my son what to do or not do! He said “I can see you’re not happy, I can call my supervisor”. I said “I would rather you go tell my son what to do than call your supervisor”. I didn’t want to complain, I just wanted someone to help my son. He then walked over the spent a few minutes showing the children how to clip in, tighten, how the ropes work, etc.
Not explaining safety or giving any instruction to first timers is a real liability! Even at acrobranch, visitors are given a proper safety briefing and demonstration. City Rock poses a much greater danger with the heights, with little care for children who don’t know what to do. I know many people are regulars but surely staff should help first timers and give some safety information? I think R230 should buy basic safety advice and instruction. Not impressed at all.

Went to watch a junior competition. Friendly, helpful staff, a coffee shop, beautifully clean and airy. Kids loved the challenges. Was fairly busy on a Saturday. It's not cheap especially if you need to hire equipment but great exercise and skill based fun for the entire family.

So big it was. Very spacious. Good landing puffers. So many routes. Friendly staff. Clean and neat. Boulder section was tricky

I just learnt about City ROCK when Googling rock climbing options in Johannesburg. City ROCK is the biggest indoor climbing gym in Africa. The Johannesburg location is less than three years old. The facility is clean and well-maintained. The staff are pleasant and helpful. They offer many different courses for kids and adults. There is free wifi, a café, a yoga studio, and gym equipment. They encourage community by having people share their business cards and contact details if looking for climbing friends. Bathrooms are spacious and clean. They also offer kiddies birthday parties.

Kids enjoyed it a lot. Nice setup. Hired gear in good condition. Helpful and friendly staff. Nice coffee and shop. I would suggest a little more challenge for the 10-12 years olds. Maybe an instructor to demo to kids and parents how to climb with a belay ticket. Maybe a bit overpriced for what is on offer for below 12 year olds.

Fully stocked climbing gym with high walls, bouldering sections, kids section, even crack climbing. There is a fully stocked store, gym, coffee, food and even yoga studies and stretching zones!
One of a kind place and 5 stars for sure!
You can book with friends for a course take your kids or even climb on the auto belays!
