The entire site is spread out within a complex on top of a hill, comprising of several structures dedicated to dance , music, kitchen and dining hall, the famous carved stone chariot etc.
The workmanship and detailing is magnificent of the granite stones, though roughly placed have stood there since 18 th century.A timeless monument to celebrate victory of wars by 2 kings.
There is an entry ticket and Evan to cover the climb, efficiently managed, parking space and well marked out structures. The ticket is valid for a single entry to this temple, museum as well as the Lotus mahal or Zenana ghar which is a short distance away. Bonus is the Queen’s bath , typical of its times.
Guides are readily available to explain the mini model of the temple or play music on the hollow pillars made out of stone. Fascinating to see how a combination of animals are depicted in a single carving, such is the workmanship on display!
One truly feels overawed at this array of our ancestors artistry and skill at this engineering monument.

Vithala temple complex is one of the most important sites in Hampi. It comprises of vijaya vithala temple, the famous stone chariot which is on the currency notes, couple of sabha grah and a huge mandapa. The architecture, sculptures and the work in the temple is amazing. The carvings on the pillars, especially two sided carvings, 3 shaped carvings, muscial stone pillars are all amazing. Need minimum of couple of hours alongwith a trained guide to understand the place. There is no climb in the temple, and can be easily visited by senior citizens also. Must visit.

It is no doubt intricate and one of the most important temples, but not particularly any more impressive than some of the other temples in Hampi such as Virupaksha or Achyutaraya to warrant a special entry fee. The fee can also be used to visit the Zenana Enclosure but it has to be on the same day. Still, I am glad I shelled out some bucks to see it!

Vittala temple is one of the finest works of the Vijayanagar architecture. You will need minimum half a day to visit this place. You have to travel by battery-operated vehicles ( Buggies ). It costs Rs. 20 per person for a return journey. Buggies available from 9.30 AM onwards. One may choose to walk this 1.5 km distance also. There are other sites to visit around the complex which are also impressive. Kings balance , purandara dasa mandapam etc are few of them. Since it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has been kept really clean. Purandaradasa mandapam is a small open pillared pavilion with whitewashed top dedicated to the legendary poet Purandaradasa who lived in Hampi. The pavilion is located at the river shore . You can go and click beautiful pictures .The pavilion is almost at the edge of the river that during monsoon the river water touches the platform or even submerges it.

The temple complex is an ode to the Sheer grandeur of the Vijayanagara Empire of 14 to 16 century before being destroyed by its neighbors in 1565. The temple has musical pillars whicch is now not allowed. The architecture is too amazing to be put into words. A guide is a must to understand the various nuances of the sculpture. The stone chariot in the courtyard is one of the three such stone chariots in the country.

How did they construct those musical pillars? It's an architectural wonder which probably has never been replicated.

@arunshetty A perfect review for a travel photographer like me. Can you please tell me what was the time of the day you visited the temple? early morning? around what time? I personally believe in seeing these monuments in the wee hours of early morning and sunset as the light condition is awesome coupled with less crowd :) ...some more pointers will be helpful!
1. do you need a guide to know the details of the place?
2. do u get guides there? If yes, how much do they charge
3. any local recommendations?

Early morning is the best time to visit at around 8am.
Plenty of guides available but I bought the book and read it and went around leisurely at my own pace though guides are easily available for about 500-800 bucks.
Could anyone tell me complete itinerary for hampi 2 days ? Hw much guide generally charged per day? Hw much expense apporx per person?

Hi,
You can see the major sights in two days, but more time would not be boring.. I do not use a guide and the guidebooks they sell there are not very useful. There is abundant information and maps on the internet. The TA forum has many posts on itineraries and costs. I recommend finding a good rickshaw driver who can give brief information about a site and get you there. I paid 800 idr per day and had an excellent very knowledgeable driver: Jeelan-tel 7829989516. I suggest you reserve 1/2 day on your own to visit the Viraprushka temple and take the walk from Hampi Bazaar to the Sri Vitala temple (about 2 km, easy walk and lots to see on the way. Enjoy Hampi.

Hampi is perfect tourist place to visit and all hotels there are economical. You can just get down at hampi bus stand from there need to walk 5 mnts till hampi market, there you will get small lodging. All hotels have there own lodges.i would suggest to travel with bicycle as it will not be that hot during that time . 2 days is ample time to tour hampi. People are very helpful.you can just take a small.map of hampi and travel around. All are near by not so far. Take crocile ride in the river which is flowing through hampi and get awesome views of anjani hills. Please visit anjani hills if you have time.

Yes tickets are must. But not for infants.
Even if you use public transport, you have to get down at the entry, then have to take electrically run vehicles. Public transport vehicles are not allowed to reach this place.
Available, run by locals at the road side.

When is there holiday or closure of complex

بنغالور, الهند28 مساهمة
You should have been very specific about your question. You can visit all the monuments in all 365 days, from 6 AM to 8 PM. Only two places are protected with doors and fencing are, 1) Vittala complex and 2) Royal enclosure. There are no holidays to visit these monuments.

Hey Sharon,
if this question was about all the sites in Hampi, it will be kind of tough.. There are too many places and all of them are equally good..
If you are really interested to know in detail then I would suggest that it would be best to hire a guide with some research.. You can find local guides In each site as well..
I jus finished my tour of Hampi and Badami .. We hired an Auto in Hampi and he took us to all the sites.. charged us 1K.. Was quite comfortable .. We had just one day so had to drop one or 2 places.. Also, I have heard the other side of the river is also quite pretty.. We cudnt go Thr due to lack of time..
Have a good trip !!!

The problem with Monuments and temples etc at Hampi just now is the work that has been carried out in the name of tourism. I don't know what has been moved or what is destroyed or what has stayed put. It's a disgrace.

I will give you the best route to visit all the monuments at Hampi. Here I want to make it cleat that I was native of Hosapete 15 km's from Hampi. All the visitors to Hampi will normally stay at Hosapete. Here they need to hire a vehicle or a Auto. For taxi you can rely on one by name Monika travels, situated at TB Dam Rod, near Pragathi grameena Bank maintained by one Mr. RL Reddy, whose phone no. is 919448471546, he will help you to get a taxi. On the way to Hampi one wll come across a railway track, after the track within 200 meters distance to the right 1) Ananthashayana Temple, without any idol worth seeing. One will spend atleast 10 minutes here. 2) From here after1.5 km's to your left you will find well beautifully maintained and worth seeing. It is a two storied well, well preserved. During those Krishnadevaraya's days the tourists or pilgrims were taking rest in these two storied well during the night times. You will spend 10 minutes here. After 45 km's you will come cross the great arch entrance to Hampi. It leads to Hampi via Kadddirampura. 3) here you will find the great mohammadians grave yard. If you are interested you will spend another 10minutes here. After you cover 5 km's. you will first come across 4) Mustard Ganapa to your left. Spend 10minutes. To your right is the Krishna or Balakrishna temple. You leave Balakrishna here. 100 mtrs. away exists the (5) Peanut Ganesha. (Kadalakalu Ganapa). Spend 10mminutes here. The same route you will go to the great tower of (6) Sri Virupaksha temple. Spend nearly a hour here. From the temple at a distance of l km, there is monolith bull. Leave it there. .
Retrace your path back to the (7) Balakrishna temple. spend 05 to 10 minutes here. On the way to y;our right is Monolith (8) great sculpture of Sri Lakshminarasimha (9) and adjacent to it is Badavi Linga. spend 5 to 10 minutes here. From here at a distance of 50 meters (10) Chandikesvara Temple and (11) Large Veerabhadra temple. Spend 5 to 10 minutes here. On the way next comes is (12) Great sisters stones twice broken. 50 meters from here (13) Under ground Shiva temple. Spend 5 to 10 minutes here. Immediately to your right is (14) Mint and Generals enclosure. Spend15 to 20 minutes here. To your left is Army quarters. (15) You have to make use of observatory. Among the quarters if the guide is well acquainted will take you to the (16) 'Attached bath rooms''. Adjacent to this generals enclosures is the Hazara Rama Temple. Leave it there. 200 meters away from here is the Janana enclosure, where you will come across (17) Lotus Mahal, (18) Elephants stable (19) Guards quarters and a (20) Museum. If you are interested behind the elephants tables, there is ''shringarada Hebbagilu'' which is learnt to be the main entrance to the Kingdom. Here you will spend nearly 2 hours. Retrace the path. Come to the (21) Hazararama temple. If you know some thing about the Ramayana. then you will feel thrilled the way the Ramayana was sculptured in three rows of the stones. And on all the walls of this temple the story of Ramayana was sculptured. Spend 15 to 20 minutes here. Then within 50 meters distance, you will find the (22) Kings audience hall, (23) Mahanavami Platform (24) Aqua duct and (25) Public bath. Depending on your interest you will spend 30 minutes here. After 200 meters distance you will find (26) Queens bath, to study in detail you may spend nearly 5 to 10 minutes here. From here you take right turn. there (27) you will find Dining hall and water storage tank. Go forward, after 250 meters there is a sign board to your left, that says Octagonal bath. From here after the distance of another 250 meters you will find this great monument (28) Octagonal bath (29) Saraswathi temple and (30) Chandrashekhar temple.Spend 5 to 10 minutes here Come back and take the route to Kamalapura, and at the circle take left turn. At distance of 500 meters you will find another signboard to your right which reads as (31) Bheema's gate. and (32) Ganagithi temple. Spend 5 to 10 minutes here. Go forward, at a distance of 1 km. there is (33) Malyavantha Raghunaqtha temple on the hillock.Spend 5 to 10 minutes here. Come back. Take right turn. at a distance of 2 kms. there comes (34) Gate called as Thalavara ghatta Road. Spend 5 to 10 minutes here. Then at 500 meters away from here is the way to Great Vittala temple. Vehicles are not allowed. You have to catch the electrically driven vehicles to reach the (35) Vittala Temple. Spend nearly 1 to 2 hours here. Then comes (36) Kings balance and (37) Purandara dasa mantapa, From here my advise is to go by walk towards Sri Kodandarama temple. If you are hiring the taxi or Auto ask the person to come to the monolith bull.
From Purandara Mantapa, on the way you will come across kishkinda learnt to be the kingdom of the Monkey's. (38) Sugreeva Guha. (39) Varaha Temple, (40) Achyutharaya temple. Spending the time depends on the interest you show on each monuments and the place. (41) is Sri KodandaRama Temple, (42) Chakratheeertha , then you will come to the place of (43) Monolith bull. From here if you are interested you may climb the (44) Mathanga Hill to have a Ariel view of the empire. This completes your journey in the Great Hampi.
