These free to visit castle remains are in decent condition - for a ruin! I'd not go out of my way to visit, but if you are passing on the road, or walking the path of Hadrian's Wall, then it is worth taking the few minutes to walk around them and think of the rich history available to us all.

There was more of the castle than I had expected after 600 years. It seems a shame that it is not protected as the other parties of tourists were climbing up and down the walls. Overall, a pleasant find.

We were walking coast to coast along Hadrian's Wall during a heatwave in July and passed by Thirlwall Castle mid-morning. We were very glad to rest and rehydrate in the shade of the castle ruins, as there's not a lot of shade on this walk!
There's not a lot to see here, but the ruins are very picturesque and we took a few great photos. There are a couple of information boards to read if you want further information on the castle.
Located not quite mid-way between Gilsland and Cawfield Quarry, just before reaching Walltown Quarry Country Park.

Interesting castle ruins with nice views & good walking country. Not much to see in the ruins. Close to Hadrians wall & Pennine way.

Was on a walking holiday and I went right past. So it was worth looking at for a few minutes. The information board was good.

The castle was built during the 12th Century using stones from the nearby Hadrian's Wall and abandoned after the border wars ceased.
We passed it while walking along the wall last summer. Nice place to stop for a sandwich and look over the area. Nothing much to see in the castle as it is a ruin,now maintained by the national park and is free to enter at any time.
Watch out for cow manure.

Thirwall Castle is a fine ruin and is a protected building, so one supposes that, whilst it won't deteriorate much more, it won't be rebuilt either. I believe it is owned by the National Park Authority and it is such a pity that it I not shown off in the same way as Hadrian's Wall is. Just a short walk out of Greenhead on the Pennine Way, the ruined castle has quite an interesting history and is worth a visit. It is, afterall, a proper English Castle.
Interestingly, the castle was partly restored (several hundred years ago) using stone taken from Hadrian's Wall. Other than this, the castle has no connection with the wall: it was built much later than the wall.

We stopped here while driving to an access location for Hadrian's Wall. It requires a short walk up what can be a very wet climb (it was when we visited). There is some signage, but the remains are not that interesting or impressive. Skip.

The views were worth the walk up the hill from Hadrian's Wall. Nice castle mostly ruins but some wall standing, gives a good idea of the size and use of the place. Very open and free to visit

We did the circular Greenhead/Thirlwall Castle walk on a cold, wet and windy day in February. We walked along by Hadrian's Wall, then crossed a bridge where there were some pretty cottages by the stream.. Then there is a bit of a climb to get to the castle. It was an interesting place to stop and have a quick look around. The views from the castle, of the surrounding countryside, are beautiful, It is a nice place to visit as part of a very enjoyable walk
