Never saw the castle. The land owner has about 2 sheep running about the headland from what we could see and what appears to be a a personal dislike for dogs. We were bluntly advised no dogs allowed on their land. Everywhere else has been dog friendly this trip so we weren't stopping any longer here. The beach was nice for a quick leg stretch, but not worth the hour detour. Lots of other great places to go.

Went to have a nosey at the castle while staying at the nearby camp site. Well worth a visit if in the area. The views are unbelievable on a nice day and although it’s not jaw dropping the castle is a cool and quirky way of killing an afternoon and enjoying the views

Short little walk to this tiny concrete structure. Unusual and pointless building but the views around are nice. Sadly some revolting person had done a no.2 inside the castle - no idea why someone would do this, the campsite toilet is literally 10 mins away.

Cracking wee castle built on the edge off the rocks above caravan park at auchmelvick beach
Completed in 1954 and the builder spent 5 days at ai and returned to London and never returned
Well worth the walk to find it amongst the rocks at the cliffs edge
So if you get fed up on the beach go find the hermits castle.
Then dknde back to the campsite then down the beach

If you are looking for a real castle with some sort of historical significance, don't go here. Go to one of the countless and indistinguishable castles in the rest of Scotland. If you want a fun, Route 66 style attraction hidden on an offshoot of the NC500, add this to your itinerary! You will find the path back behind the camp offices through a fence gate and a rocky sheep peninsula. It is a wee castle you can go inside and take some fun Godzilla photos of you attacking it from the roof. In a country with so few quirk attractions, you have to appreciate the ones that do exist.

Not sure why so many negative reviews - this is exactly as expected - a tiny adorable castle! So small and quaint - a little tricky to find but beautiful location so not hard to enjoy exploring the rocks to find it. The little beach is stunning and the parking is plentiful- we took our little pooch - the 'no dogs' signs are just for the campsite so we carried him through that area just to be careful but sure it wouldn't be an issue for well behaved bigger doggos

This is Europe’s smallest castle believe it or not. The castle is quite ugly and doesn’t have any purpose to be there. The walk there is nice but watch your step because there is sheep poo. Also the view is stunning.

The castle is incredibly small (of course, that's the point!) but you can go inside and it's an interesting thing to look at! The walk to and from the castle is very scenic aswell, with great view of the cliffs - however beware the start of the walk isn't obvious (up the hills to the left of Achmelvich Beach, or alternatively through the nearby campsite) - we also walked past the castle the first time as we just followed the cairns to the second peak and the noticed when we turned around that it was actually tucked away near the first peak and we had passed it! Still, we got a nice walk out of it anyway!

Very weird castle. Doesn’t look like a proper old castle. The view is stunning though that’s why it 2 stars not 1.

It’s quite fun reading through some of the other peoples reviews and seeing what they have to say and the descriptions used. Despite doing extensive research on the NC500 Hermit’s Castle had not made it onto my radar until I saw a post on Instagram. Folks it’s also on Google maps which is a useful tip. Ironically Achmelvich beach which l is near was on my list which is a lovely family beach, but perhaps a bit busy by Highland standards due to its proximity to the caravan site.
Hermit’s Castle was built in the 1950’s and is apparently Europe’s smallest castle. To get to it you have to park at the beach car park, then traverse the beach, cross the caravan/camping site to its dogleg and get over a stile, after which I guess it’s about 500 yards further. There’s a lot of going up and down boulders and it’s very boggy getting there, so good waterproof shoes help or be at peace with wet feet. I saw no signposts anywhere or directs and happened to meet a local who indicated how to get there. Google maps would probably have been the trick if here was signal.
I enjoyed seeing the mini castle which is about 4 feet or so tall. I see some people describe it as art. Is it in the same category as Windsor or Edinburgh? No not quite, but there’s a certain air of breeze block about it. It’s fun none the less and certainly no miniature fake model either. I hope with time the windows and door are replaced. To get a really good picture you need someone in the photo in order to get a proper perspective of its size. It’s just a bit of fun which I enjoyed seeing and why not? The location is wonderful, wild and hidden.
