Great to see in person and experiencing an area where Mammoths roamed and used these rocks as scratching posts. How cool is that?

A must see beach and rock formations on the Pacific coast. The drive to the beach is a winding one lane road and just keep going you will get there.

We love the big rock formations in the Bodega Bay - Sonoma Coast area. They are impressive to see The vista views of the Pacific Ocean and the rock formations are awesome.

This is a great hike from Shell beach - level - or from the road to Goat Rock - downhill. Either way, it’s worth it. These rocks are popular with rock climbers now, so that’s also fun to observe. Look for the smooth rocks about shoulder high that have - allegedly- been rubbed by Wooly Mammoths about 15,000 years ago. Hey, who am I to question the authenticity of this site - it’s cool!

Beautiful coastline. More impressive than Big Sur!!!! We had a wonderful time after being evacuated from Sonoma with no power. A real treat.

We took a drive up the PCH north of San Fran, really cool drive. We've been south on PCH and that was OK but this was a better drive. Really cool scenery. Rugged coastlines, huge rock formations, winding country roads, cool! Wanted to stay at a couple places along the way but with family. Next time with just the wife. Worth the time.

There is a reason a lifeguard will be close by when you enter this area. Lots of people are lost at sea, or injured, due to not paying attention to the rough waves, and fast moving water in this area. It is beautiful, and yet must be careful as you go!

We hiked to Mammoth Rocks after visiting Goat Rock. Prior to that I had researched the archaeological pages on it from historians and read it to my 22 yr old son and girlfriend the night before. We were excited to be walking to the rocks mammoths had walked around. The only disappointing thing was rock climbers had swarmed one of the rocks with many people and gear and so the experience was broken up with their loud desire to conquer rather than just enjoy the rocks in silence.

Beautiful iconic Pacific Coast views! We pulled into the parking lot at Goat Rock and found a marine sanctuary on one side where we watched the surf pounding against huge rock monoliths, plus many seals, pelicans, seagulls, and other seabirds in constant motion just beyond the breaking waves. On the other side of the parking lot was a similar area but dogs were allowed. Waves seemed just a little gentler here, with very little sealife activity (I assume bc of the dogs & people), and a still-fascinating shoreline with massive rock formations. Just beautiful!! Fog came and went, so sometimes the sea appeared deepest blue and at others a stunning aquamarine. Very chilly and windy. Dogs loved it all! Note - there're also restrooms in the parking lot.

So the story is that the smooth patches on these rocks are attributable to ancient Mammoths rubbing their backs and sides on the rocks. Spoiler alert: the Mammoths have been gone for about 15,000 years and no one actually saw this happening. That said, the rocks are ancient sea stacks, remnants of a long ago coastline. They lie on the Kortum Trail, a stunning 4 mile walk along the coastal cliffs. Start your walk at Duncan's Point (Paleolithic Indian caves) and walk north. Stay off of Wright's Beach: it's dangerous with rip tides and sneaker waves. Continue north past Mammoth Rocks to Blind Beach (4 miles one way). Many great views, but sadly no Mammoths.

What is the name of the winery with stellar pinots near the Mammoth Rock trail in Bodega Bay, CA?

Any suggestions on how to find the Mammoth Rock - sounds like its at Goat Rock state beach. Thanks for any help you can offer, so very cool that you mention it.

We were just there last week.
Closest approach from road is: From CA 1, take the Goat Rock Road, and it will be on your left before you reach the goat rock. It is before you pass Blind Beach parking lot. You could use that parking lot since it has more parking spaces than the side of the road closest to the rocks. Then walk back to the Kortum trail marker and hike about 3/4 mile. Trail climbs up and when it descends, you will see the rocks. Exact GPS coordinates for the rocks are: 38 degrees 26’ 7” N, 123 degrees 7’ 14” W.
Elevation 190’.
If you start at Wright’s beach it is 4.5 miles hike to Blind beach on the Kortum trail, going North, with lots of ups and downs. Starting at Duncan’s point as someone suggested would be longer, since it is south of Wright’s beach. Other points to access the Kortum trail exist at Shell’s beach and Furlong gulch. If you start at Wright’s beach trailhead (small parking lot on right before you get to the beach) there is a map of the Kortum Trail with distances. If the website allowed us to upload images, I could upload this map.
