Fun times. The trick is to trust the sign that indicates where the trailhead is and follow that path north until the sign that points to the left saying to enter the Slot. It gets very narrow at points even for me with my baby carrier on my back with my 3 year-old daughter inside. In fact I had to take off the carrier and have my daughter walk through some of the narrowest parts of the hike. I also had to lift her down some of the rockier portions of the trail.
We did see a desert iguana which was a treat for my son.
We took the entire 2.5 mile loop instead of turning around to go back the way we came. If you take the loop like we did, you will encounter a fairly steep incline before the fire road levels out. A bunch of Rubicon 4X4s were coming down that steep incline, so be careful of them.
It was a fun time!

Incredible scenery. Hike was mildly challenging but it was certainly worth it. Would not recommend to people with physical limitations as you will need to climb and contort a little bit during the hike.

Great hike! Fun and Not difficult. Love looking at the rocks and the slots are amazing. Some open space and lots of places to wander and explore.

Be aware that to get to the trailhead you drive for two miles on sandy, washboard road, barely big enough for one car much less two side by side. Trailers NOT recommended.
The slot trail itself poorly marked. You start by going up a steep hill, then down the other side. I’m a 50-something out of shape woman, and some of the drops on the trail are 2 to 3 feet deep. Twisted my knee trying to traverse a “low overhead” area and think I snapped a ligament. Stopped about halfway through and turned around to go back out. Getting back out is more challenging than going in of course. I wasn’t sure I was going to make it since my blood pressure had dropped so much from exertion and I was starting to feel dizzy. They recommend you take at least three bottles of water for doing the slot. I agree!
It’s a beautiful slot canyon though full of interesting geological formations, but if you are not in good shape, sit this one out. The view from the parking lot is pretty cool too!

Great place to go. I have been to a different slot canyon the 3 times that I have gone and have been amazed each time.

A local person recommended this as an "easy" half mile hike. It was very cool, but not what I would consider easy. It was pretty narrow at certain places. I was glad that I ate lunch after the hike instead of before . I would definitely recommend.

This was one of the tightest slot canyons I have ever been in. The views above were amazing. The drive to the trailhead was sandy but pretty easy but you do have to be watching for the Butte Pass Road turnoff because the sign is small. Make sure to get an early start and bring water.

Great hike with interesting formations. We started at the top end and climbed over bolder sized rocks and squeezed through narrow gaps .. all of which was a good fun.

Very interesting formations down in the Slot Canyon. Some precarious rocks are wedged overhead and those rocks have cracks so be aware. A lot of the Slot Canyon is narrow and really only reasonable for one-way traffic flow. So start at the top end where the state park registry and commode shack is. Plan to climb down some bolder sized rocks at the beginning and then squeeze through a few areas side ways. Walk out into an open area at the end of the Slot Canyon where you can sit and look at the holes in the red rock bolders. Then walk/hike up the sandy vehicle trail that comes down near the open area. A good but not too hard of a hike. Just bring something to take photos, a container of water, and stop on the sandy hill climb periodically.

This was THE BEST thing we did while visiting San Diego. Victor Runco is the guide, he is knowledgeable, accommodating if needed, helpful, and very nice! He can tailor your hike to your needs. This is not an easy hike, I would consider this moderate to advanced. There is a lot of climbing narrow passages, sliding down, a minor rappel down a small area but still super fun and somewhat scary! Victor tells you exactly what to do and how to be safe. You go very high up and my advice is “do not look down” during those times. He takes pictures the whole time and will give them all to you for free at the end. I would say if you are somewhat fit, (no breathing problems, knee problems, etc. you can do this. The scariest part for me was “the slide’. Victor is right there though and has perfected a technique to make sure you stop. Victor can tell in the beginning what parts of the trail a person can handle and what parts a person can’t. He will tailor the hike to your abilities. He was so awesome and fun! Our group was small and he took us on extra trails and areas. I would recommend this to anyone visiting the area and wanting to see the beautiful coastline and very cool unique rock formations. We will do this again when we come back. 10/10 experience. His prices are awesome and a tip is def warranted.

How far of a drive is this from the Mission Beach area? When I Google it I receive an estimated drive of two hours.

Google is smarter than I, but there are some stretches of road that could result in delays if you get stuck behind a slow vehicle. I'd add 15 minutes to whatever Google says.

Is this hike accessible with a 2WD car or do you really need a 4WD?

We could get to the parking lot with a 2wd. But if you plan on getting to font's point, go for 4wd.
