‪road recently graded, stream dry so crossings easy; only a few flowers out now. Peaceful place. watch for loose sand. ‬

‪Exploring Coyote Canyon thoroughly requires a high lift 4 wheel drive vehicle even on the marked roads. Take plenty of water along in case something breaks. You will rapidly be out of cell phone range so let somebody know where you are going if you plan to go way in.

It is an incredibly rugged and beautiful place. Be prepared to ford the creek when there is water in it.‬

‪What a fun trip! Easy to drive road, we had a high clearance SUV but saw many regular passengers cars doing just fine on the road (Check on road conditions at ABDSP headquarters, and be comfortable with the rules and simple techniques of driving on desert roads.).
Was there for Super Bloom. We went early in the morning before the day trippers arrived. Many places to stop, many vistas. As the road goes thru the canyon the flora changes.
We made a long stop and hike at Desert Garden which was spectacular. Went back to the base of the hills.
Coyote Canyon is a fun place to visit even without the Super Bloom - will go to end of road next time.‬

‪I was able to make a reservation the day before! The wildflowers were gorgeous, and Joe our guide, was charming, polite, and very knowledgeable. A great guide who drove us in the medium sized Army jeep truck, and took us far into Coyote Cyn. It was spectacular, I took pictures from inside while going wonderfully off road! All but 2 out of 90+ photos I took were blurred! We got out and stretched our legs, drank cold lemon water, took more pictures, and then on to the Oasis of Palms. Joe gave us snacks and stories about Anza and his men camped on that very spot! I loved this so much, and can't wait to do other tours he has, perhaps the overnight camping complete with an Astronomer I'm told!! or maybe another canyon...the options are endless! Oh it was reasonable too!‬

‪Coyote Canyon (and the road leading to it) is a hidden gem of #SuperBloom.

My husband and I took our dog (a large breed) on our Super Bloom Trip in the 3rd weekend of March 2019. It was far better than Anza Borrego Desert State Park. Too many people, too many dogs and not enough wildflowers to boot.

You will find gorgeous Super Bloom by the long stretch of road to Coyote Canyon entrance area. Each field seemed to have different types of wildflowers and no poppies. I found it was interesting.

They were stunning regardless

Once you enter Coyote Canyon on drive into the dirt road you are going to see another sets of wildflowers and cactus blooms.

Be careful when you try to get close to the flower patches. There were a few balls of cactus rolling about. I got one of those stuck on the seam of my boot (I know! I thought I was protected.😂) I carefully try to remove it by hand. Bad move. I got my finger tip stung bad. That little thorny thing was evil!

Well, all that is now a good memory.

Happy trail! It was loads of fun!!

‪After a great informative experience at the Visitor’s Center seeing the exhibits & walking the well laid out Desert Garden, we drive over to Coyote Canyon in the distance. Headed towards Henderson Canyon leading up to the Coyote Canyon. On the way we stopped just after the big Citrus orchard where the field was in blooming glory of Yellow Desert Dandelions - almost a carpet of color. Then to the entrance of Coyote Cyn, where the pavement stopped - the dirt road was hard & we followed other cars towards the mountains for about a 7-10 bumpy drive. We stopped & carefully parked in 3 spots to see the blooming Desert Sunflowers. Great fun & photos. * TIP: Do buy the very inexpensive Desert Flower ID guide when at the Visitor’s Center - otherwise you can’t ID the flower species. Enjoy!‬

‪When it rains in the desert, March is a magical time in Anza Borrego. The thousands of visitors pouring into the valley each weekend during the short bloom attest to the popularity. If you seek solitude, and own a high-clearance 4WD, head up Coyote Canyon to enjoy the best of what Anza Borrego has to offer. The prickly flora is exploding with color, the seasonal stream is flowing, the butterflies are everywhere. Even the road, the rocks and the stream crossing make for a fun trip.‬

‪After seeing numerous news articles about the super bloom all tagged "Near Borrego Springs," my family and I decided to go in search of the blooms. There is conflicting information about where to find them and everyone suggested starting at the visitor's center. I do not recommend this. For a couple reasons, 1. Having arrived at 8:30am, the center wasn't open. 2. It's a long far walk, MILES to the better viewing spots. So after driving through the parking lot, and seeing their desert garden, we continued on. In the photos I had seen the week prior of the super bloom flowers, there were mountains nearby in the background. We decided to drive to Coyote Canyon which is pinpointed as one of the better spots on the park's list to view flowers. We drove past the first metal sculptures, turned right, then left. We drove through some kind of citrus groves. Instantly, we saw lot of cars heading closer towards the mountains on a road that says "may become difficult or require 4X4." Continue past the porta potties. These are the ONLY ones, so go before you continue on. Later in the day they open of a visitors shack with info. We didn't need it, but I did stop by on the way out to see how it was run. (Volunteers) Keep driving. On your right, you'll start to see fields of flowers, this is where it starts. We saw several varieties and different colors. Hit these on the way back and continue towards the mountains. You'll see different varieties as you drive. Continue onward and you'll see patches of yellow and purple with some tall cacti looking trees, in this area, right on the rocks at the base of the mountain is where we found the five points and the ghost flowers. Pls note, do not drive onto the soft sand, you may get stuck, pls also note that these are dirt roads, so long as they're dry you don't need 4x4 just proceed slowly. It is a bumpy ride and you may need to pull over for oncoming traffic and it's a narrow road. Follow suit and park in the wider shoulders, DO NOT PARK IN THE ROAD. Because we started early, we were able to drive to each spot, and only walk short distances. We saw other people parking near the beginning of the road and hiking through the park, which is another option, but with the amount of cars and at the speeds some of them were driving, not an option for me.

Tips-

-Start early in the day, it gets SUPER crowded. We left Irvine a 6am and got their about 8:30am with no traffic, when we left, there were hundreds of people and very little parking.
-Wear layers, our day started at 32 degrees and ended mid day at 70 with bright sun
-Watch for weather reports, the dirt roads look like they can be prone to flash flooding
-Drive further up the dirt road, but note when the flowers start to lessen in volume, it turns to mostly cacti, we stopped here.

Bring-
Shade/ hats and sunglasses - There is ZERO shade available
Water
Tweezers and/or needle nose pliers, we had two cacti run-ins
First aid kit, see above
Snacks, we spent 5 hours exploring, there are no facilities nearby for food.
Trash bags, there are no receptacles for trash.
Tp and a shovel, in case you need to go and find a bush etc, pack out the TP with you when you leave

Children- I only saw 2 other children in the whole time we were there. My 11 year old had a great time with her camera, I don't think you'll be able to hold the attention of children under 5 for long. There are also limited bathroom facilities.

Mobility challenged- This is not scooter or wheelchair accessible. They must plow the roads after rain because there were steep walls of dirt about 12-18 inches high on either side of the road. You have to carefully pick your way through the flowers over uneven ground with sand, and in some places cacti. I would suggest being able to step up 12 inches high and to be able to walk a minimum of 100 feet at a time. These flowers are mostly less than 12 inches tall, we spent a lot of time bending and stooping and got on the ground for many photos.‬

‪Can't wait for the desert flowers to bloom. We drove up today and you can see the desert flowers getting ready for the show. With the amount of rain we have had it should be any day now.‬

‪We drove to the Desert Garden Trail which was a 3 star...interesting but flowers were not abundant this spring. If you go farther up the road a 4WD is needed. It’s very rough to Willow Creek and beyond. The upper area above the creek is fascinating.‬
