Worth the drive to see these one of a kind life size metal sculptures. This place is in Borrego Springs one and a half hour drive from Palm Springs, three hours from Los Angeles. I recommend going when there's cool weather otherwise it can get extremely hot and a four wheel vehicle would be best as you need to drive off the road in sand. There's 128 to130 of these sculptures located right off "both" north and south Borrego Springs Road. The place could get crowded, so pick your best time to visit. Amazon offers a fold up laminated map of the area list where the sculptures are located.

We had so much fun finding all the different sculptures. I only found out about them three months ago and made it a destination for spring break. My granddaughter loved them.

Ever since I saw the giant serpent sculpture in the awesome Lovecraftian-scifi-horror movie “The Endless”, I’ve had this estate on my travel bucket list! As you weave in and out of the various entrances to Anza Borrego Desert State Park surrounding Borrego Springs, these iron giants rise up in various poses, lending a whimsical air to the otherwise hostile environs.
Nothing prepared me for how expansive and impressive the estate is - definitely worth a visit when you’re in the area! With 130 giant metal sculptures sprawling over numerous different sites, you’ll definitely need/want a car (maybe a bike?) to see as many as possible - but they’re so spread out I think it would be difficult to see them all in one go.
The roads meandering around the statues are dubiously maintained dirt roads - many of which have deep, soft sand requiring 4x4 vehicles so be aware. A lot of them are within walking distance of a paved or more maintained/flattened dirt road that’s drivable in regular cars - just be sure to pay attention to signs and use common sense.
There seems to be a grouping of three themes to these works of art: prehistoric creatures, local history, and whimsical fancies! The owner of the estate, Dennis Avery, commissioned the works by a SoCal artist named Ricardo Breceda - so they’re technically on private property but it’s not gated and open 24/7…just be mindful of the road signs and respectful, etc.
Definitely some local fun and a must on your visit - great photo ops abound, especially with the desert mountains and plants as the backdrop! Highly recommend!

The meadows are really a large open area that is privately owned. Its real attraction are the many large metal sculptures placed in a variety of places along the road. The serpent sculpture is not to be missed for its scale and the miner and padre are real works of detailed art.

This is an absolute must see if you are roadtripping between San Diego and Palm Springs, or even if you are making a special journey to view them. I can't recommend it enough. Download a map by searching the internet, (I believe you can also get them from Borrego Springs visitor centre) and head out into the desert to view the many metal sculptures dotted around. The dragon is the most impressive spanning across the road. The scorpion and grasshopper are amazing, and you'll find lots of other wild animals and dinosaurs nearby. You can drive right up to many of the sculptures, although there are signs near others that state it is a private estate and you will need to park on the road side. It's a photographer's dream attraction but fabulous to visit for all ages. It's so surreal. AND IT'S FREE!

Don't miss the Sand Serpent. And watch the YouTube video before you go! We missed so many sculptures we did not know were nearby.

Mostly looked from afar this time. My friend hadn’t seen the art before and was satisfied with only one close up. Driving out off road to see this interesting art was ok if you didn’t have to go too far in. Sometimes you go so far you don’t know which trail leads back to main road!
Go see it, at least once. And learn it’s background!

Fantastic sculptures dotted around the desert. We really enjoyed exploring and the hotel supplied a map which helped. You can drive around most of them although some you would want a 4WD. Definitely worthwhile and we took loads of photos

This is metal madness and joy. Scattered strategically around Galleta Meadows, these beautiful artistic pieces are definitely worthy of a visit. The man panning for gold with horse is fantastic.

Who expects 100 Bigger than Life iron statues in the middle of the desert with free and plentiful parking (ok, I did, but I read about it here). VERY cool stuff, from a 1940s jeep to fantastic beasts of imagination to Sancho Panza, these are all over the place as you explore the desert. A treat for all

I’m not sure what the roads / tracks are like - Can you drive round the sculptures in an RV?
كُتب بتاريخ 15 سبتمبر 2019
We had a 4 wheel drive vehicle but never put it in 4 wheel drive! It is excellent bc u want to be able to get right up next to the sculptures. The day we went there was only like 4 other cars driving around- so it isn’t like a stream of cars going from sculpture to sculpture. You will be so happy that u went. Wish we had stayed to see the night sky! It is a night sky park! Google it- looks amazing!

Hi! About how much time does it take to seem them all? Thanks!
كُتب بتاريخ 3 سبتمبر 2019
We always do them in small groups so you have more time, we think they always look best around dusk, or even partially dark with the right camera since it’s a dark community
I would guess you need around 2 hours to get them all in, but that to me would feel a little rushed

Is there an entrance fee into the Galleta Meadows?
كُتب بتاريخ 24 سبتمبر 2018
No fees. The sculptures are placed along the roads and you just pull off the road to see them and drive on to the next one. I have a small car and was a little nervous at getting stuck in the soft sand, but it wasn't a problem.

Can u drive around and see sculptures. We have person with mobility issues.
كُتب بتاريخ 8 مارس 2018
The sculptures are either visible from the paved road, or a very short distance off the road. (like 100 feet or so).
Most of the time the dirt/sand roads are easily passable by care. This is NOT a 4-wheel drive adventure. Ordinary cars are fine.
I have a couple of suggestions...earlier or later in the day are best for weather and sun. Midday sun is hot and glarey.
Also, bring a camera with a telephoto lens, or some binoculars, and you will probably see more detail than the people who walk right up to them.
I have spend many hours just driving around Borrego Springs and the Anza Borrego desert area, and often never leave the car. It's "desert beautiful".
There sculptures are just a few minutes from Christmas Circle, so they are close to town, and easy to get to.
Last tip...the are in the west end of the valley, and the mountains just to the west cast a long shadow late in the day. It literally gets darker earlier over there. Not a big problem, in fact a benefit when it's hot. But not as good for pictures after the sun dips behind the mountains..
Enjoy!

Who was/are the sculptors? So far I've not seen one word about him/her/them. A breathtaking deficiency on the sites realted to Galleta Meadows. What is the story behind the concept of the sculptures and how, where and when they were constructed?

RICARDO BRECEDA
Born in Durango Mexico, Ricardo has lived in California for the last 25 years.
He has has been creating his (metal) animal kingdom, since the release of the movie Jurassic Park III.
His daughter’s enthusiasm over dinosaurs sparked his interest in the creation of these prehistoric beasts. What started as a hobby quickly became a passion to transform metal into incredible life like creations. Since then Ricardo has become a well known sculptor / designer. One of his largest collections can be appreciated in the city of Borrego Springs California where thousands of people from around the world come to see what everyone is talking about. They find out it is much bigger and amazing than what they have heard.
