Most people visit this part of Anza-Borrego to tear around the desert in their ORVs, but it has attractions for the rest of us too. The web of dirt roads radiating out from the ranger station, just off SR 78, takes you to lot of interesting desert features, both geological and historical. The ironically named Shell Reef Expressway is a well-graded dirt road leading to a unique hillside of prehistoric seashells encased in stone. It also connects to roads leading into the San Felipe Wash and Borrego Sink, as well looping back around to the highway. Some of the side roads require 4-wheel drive, some don't. The rangers at the visitor center can advise you about that.

This was my first trip to Ocitlo Wells off-road park.
We normally go to the Imperial Sand Dunes/ Gordon’s well. My sons friend has a dirt bike so he suggested going to Ocitillo Wells.
The place was easy to get to from San Diego, about two hours. Once we got there it was a easy place to find a camp site, since we have a toyhauler trailer we could camp anywhere. We picked a spot just past Holmes Campground, it was flat with some nice hills around to ride in. I drive our Yamaha Rhino, my son has a quad, and his friend had a dirt bike.
We rode to “Pumkin Patch”, “Blow Hill”, and “Devils Slide”. All were different types of terrain and all the trails were well marked.
We will definitely be going back, it was a blast.

The trails are well-marked, and the best part is there are destinations to ride to, not just riding in circles. Restrooms at destinations, and great maps distributed by the Cal State Parks rangers. One of my favorite places for years, and camping and riding is still FREE! Vehicle rentals are nearby at Salton City if you don’t have the right vehicle, or want to test ride before you buy.

First off road playing at Ocotillo... It was a bit flat and dusty for my style of off roading. Geared to the fast movers of the world, not a lot to see but for a few hills and some hot water bubbling from the ground.

This is a big Off Road riding area. There is all kinds and types of desert riding here. All the major washes and roads have signs so you can use maps to learn the area and know where you are at. This Park borders Anza-Borrego State Park and when you get to its boundaries signs tell you that only street licensed vehicles are allowed past that point. Stores are close by for Gas/Food etc. Be cool and pack out all of your own trash and maybe some others left behind. Don’t burn pallets because of the nails left behind ruins expensive Tires. Also no Sky Lanterns as they trash the desert...our playground for our toys !

Es un excelente campo para andar en moto los baños están limpios y hay eventos muy bonitos para toda la familia no tocó ver la luna a través de telescopios después de una explicación. Los servicios de emergencia llegan muy pronto lo vimos en un accidente que ocurrió cerca del campamento.

This was our first time in the area and we were overwhelmed by the beauty of the place. If you can imagine a watercolor desert landscape hanging in a museum where people come to gape in awe, then Ocotillo Wells must have been the inspiration. I found it more worthwhile than Joshua Tree National Park which is also in the vicinity. We were only doing a drive through but I can't imagine a more perfect desert escape for outdoor enthusiasts.

Rode rentals here for 8 hours. What an incredible and varied location. From the Salton City view it appears as a desolate flatland. Once in the parks in the gullies and hill, and wow! Had a blast on every section. Even on what appear as a busy weekend we could find locations empty of others. I highly recommend this area. Bring your own or rent to go, plan on being sort at the bed of the incredible day.

This off road vehicle park has a lot to offer. The trails are very well marked - the best I have ever seen. The terrain ranges from easy to challenging. There are a few interesting geological features to see along the trails. Be sure and stop at the Discovery Center before you head out to pick up a map and information regarding the features found in the park and the current conditions along the trails. All the usual precautions of enjoying off road travel should be adhered to.
