I stayed at the bike-in campsite. Unlike many state parks which have hike & bike sites, this is a bike only site. There are 3 to 5 individually marked bike sites in one area of the campground, conveniently located close to the restrooms/showers and close to the ocean overlook. The showers are 25¢ a minute, quarters only. That's acceptable when you pay $5 for the bike site, but if you're paying the full $35 rate it's a bit unreasonable for a campground which most likely is connected to the Capitola municipal water supply. Only one of the two trails to the beach is currently open.
There are plenty of restaurants in the area; downtown Capitola is very close.

New Brighton State Beach, Santa Cruz, CA, a sandy beach, home for birds and human to co-exist. People use this active beach for recreational use – surfing, walking, etc. while birds tend to their own survival business.
The most important take home lesson for us in this trip was that human do not need to feed the birds. Nature is a great provider. A perfect habitat for long-billed curlew, sandpipers, egrets, seagulls … for food foraging. Their feeding behavior is interesting. Other natives like cormorants and pelicans brave the waves and dive underwater for a good catch. Cormorants are not speedy flyers like seagulls and pelicans. Look out for them perching on rocks or trees. Aggression also occurs among birds. Catch a moment when some aggressive/opportunistic birds pirating another bird’s catch. Must be very interesting to watch.
Fishing aficionados come here to catch some surfperch and beachcombers to kill time in hope to find some valuable treasures. Beach hikers like us do the walk ‘til we hit 10K steps and/or more. Some dog owners bring along their best friends. Children play in the water. Surfers risk to ride the waves. Certainly, anyone can find something to do in this active beach.
The parking area and campground share one nice spot right on the blufftop overlooking the beach. Climb down the stairs to get to the beach. Make sure you make frequent stops in between to enjoy the view of the ocean and/or see what people are up to. That way it won’t be hard on your knees. Get inspired to do your 10K step challenge as we did 11K circling around during this visit. Pack some good lunches for picnic. Remember – Pack it in, Pack it out
Aside from the campsite parking, many people park on the street along the neighborhood Coronado St, cross-street of Park Ave. The beach access is across Park Ave, right on the STOP sign where the old rail tracks are. Saw people walk the tracks, must be a dead track. Watch for some footstep technical as you ascend to the beach. Can be slippery. Missing a step may result to injury.
As you head down to the beach, watch the beachcombers and surfers from this distance. Walk straight toward Seacliff State Beach fishing pier where you see the historical landmark, SS Palo Alto or better known as “Cement Ship” is forever lodged and decaying. Cement Ship was a concrete ship turned into a tanker at the end of WW1, later turned into a part of a fishing pier and an entertainment complex. Once you reach this landmark, you are right on Seacliff State Beach which connects to New Brighton Beach. Farther afield from Seacliff Beach is Rio del Mar Beach. A long walk for sure, but definitely a good exercise.

We enjoyed a picnic and fun day at New Brighton State Park in Santa Cruz.
It was a sunny day in December. The park has areas to enjoy the beach.
There is also a picnic area with views near in the campground area.

This is probably the best beach in SC county to go for long walks/runs due to its length. Not much in the way of seashells, etc. so, not an ideal place to go beach combing.

I've visited weekly for two years, usually park for free in town and hike down the hill with the tightwads.

My family visited New Brighton State Beach Campground in July 2018. We live in the Bay Area and have been to Santa Cruz many times, but this was really a surprise. This campground is in the Santa Cruz mountains in the town of Capitola. The drive in is beautiful and woodsy. The campground is clean, with approximately 100 tent/RV sites. The majority of these sites lack privacy and shade. But that is not the end of the story- there are a handful of premium sites that overlook the beach and a few around these sites which I would recommend too (partial view or close to beach trail:72, 74, 70, 69). These sites are really special! We were in site 70 which was right next to the beach trail. In the mornings we could walk down this short path to a beautiful expansive beach, which is really the reason to stay at New Brighton! When we were there the water was very calm. We loved walking about a mile and a half down to the “concrete ship” and back. Many walkers, runners and dogs. Very clean. Can’t say enough about being able to camp AND enjoy a beach walk! During the day we went into the town of Capitola for lunch at Zelda’s and into all the cute little shops. This is another positive about camping at New Brighton- close to Capitola and Aptos (5 minutes!) so if you forget something, don’t feel like cooking, etc., you can easily pop into town! We got wood at Ace Hardware in Aptos and there is a Safeway there too.
Quiet time was enforced at 10 pm and campers seemed considerate. Lots of families and kids able to ride bikes around campground loops.
Are these the most beautiful sites you will have ever seen? No. Is it amazing anyway? Yes!
Go! Reserve 6 month’s in advance!

Stayed at the campground. Beach was just a short hike down the hill. Both the campground, and beach were clean. Beautiful views, not too crowded. Weather was perfect! Short drive to downtown Capitola.

We walk to this area from one of our homes, just to take in the natural beauty of the ocean. Yesterday evening, the unusual event was the Coast Guard towing a sinking vintage cabin cruiser type boat to the southern side of the cement ship, and leaving it about 300 feet off shore, apparently anchored, to sink in the coming storm. Quite the crowd gathered to watch!

If you are not camping at the beach camp grounds, I think you can drive to the beach during the day and need to pay only for car parking.
Are dogs allowed on the beach?

In 2014 the stench of sardines was horrid. Since there have been so many shark sightings I am assuming that the water is still unusually warm, which might attract the sardines once more. How is the smell at New Brighton Beach in the summer of 2015?

We were there in June. Mid-morning the air was crisp and clean, smelled of saltwater and a bit of kelp. No one was swimming.
