My family and I live in Tarzana, CA yet our beach of choice that we frequent on a monthly basis is just over an hour up the 101 to Carpinteria - a wonderful beach community that we adore. Though we've been going for years, I never seem to hit it quite right to visit the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History... we're either still enjoying the beach during their open hours or we're there on days they're closed (like Sundays).
Well... this time I was going to make it! I ended up walking there from the beach and caught them right at the end of the day! They are open Tuesdays-Saturdays 1-4pm. While donations are welcomed, admission is free!!!
They have a lot of great stuff for a small historical museum, and especially for a free museum, you have absolutely nothing to lose!!! I really enjoyed all the rooms set up to look like the years of old. I enjoy antiques, so it's really fun to see all they have on display! There are items hidden everywhere, and I even managed to discover a few things the docent hadn't really noticed before! Bonus points for still having the retro linoleum my grandparents used to have in the 1980s (pictured).
There's a lot to learn even for someone who's listed the area. I wasn't aware that Carpinteria at one time was well known for their walnut farming. They have one of the old walnut machines that is really impressive (also pictured).
So the next time you're enjoying a beach day or beach weekend, check this place out! It's not a super quick walk from the beach depending on your activity level, but if you're in for a little walk, it's a nice, easy one.
PS. Another hidden Carpinteria gem that is rarely open, but the kids will enjoy (that is literally right in the beach parking lot) is the Visitor's Center. Check that free attraction out too and feed some fish!!!

We enjoyed our stroll through the museum, which had lots of local history and artifacts. We were lucky enough to visit on the last Saturday of September when the museum also hosted their Museum Marketplace. A fun flea market with lots of colorful items.

Although I have been to Carpinteria many times I had never been to the Museum until today. The building and grounds are small but very nice. The docents did a great job explaining the exhibits. The kids remained interested for most of the tour but I did take the three younger boys (7,6,5) out at the end so they could play tag on the grass. My daughter (11), sister and Mom stayed for the entire guided talk which probably lasted 30 minutes. I liked that the docent interacted very well with the kids and helped them touch things. That was great! It is a lot about earlier American life as much as it is about Carpinteria. A great way to be exposed to things from the past. Don’t need to walk there they have plenty of parking!

I really enjoyed my journey back in time at this museum. The docents were all very charming and kind. Although I arrived about 30 minutes to closing the docent who guided me through the museum did not rush our tour nor fail to mention any pertinent historical facts about the town. I highly recommend a stop here to understand the origins of Carpinteria.

Although the museum is small, it has very informative exhibits, showing the history of Carpinteria. The doll house was a favorite of my granddaughter.

The docents are very knowledgable. Many nice exhibits in a small setting. The docents also have a long family history in the Valley.

Quaint little museum about the local history of Carpinteria. Free but donations are helpful. Docents are knowledgeable!

Because we really liked Carpinteria, we wanted to know more about it so we sought out the history museum. The docent we had was a local and very knowledgeable. There are actual life-sized cut outs of residents who were important people for the town and the museum. We particularly enjoyed the exhibit displaying artifacts from the Chumash Indians.
