‪For a place almost no one has heard of, this is quite spectacular. Props to ranger "Andy" who gave an engaging, well informed tour without all the silly stuff many private cave tours include. Tour takes you to several large rooms and through narrow passages, but requires no special experience (or even fitness). Really beautiful and unexpected place, and the park the caverns are in is spectacular, too.‬

‪My husband and I made reservations a month ago for the 11am Mitchell Caverns guided tour on Feb 7th. With excitement, we spent the night in Barstow, got up early on the 7th and drove the long 2 hour drive to Mitchell Caverns only to find the entrance gate locked!! We met 4-5 other people who also had reservations and were equally surprised to find the gate locked. No notice at the gate was posted nor were there any personnel to greet us with more information. None of us had been called, emailed or texted regarding this closure!! When we called the phone number, the recording said the caverns we’re closed until further notice and we will contact you if you have a reservation! Needless to say we were all very disappointed but made the best of it by doing the wonderful Hole in the Wall Ring Trail! Perhaps it’s time for the National Park Service to own/manage this amazing treasure!‬

‪Making Reservations was easier than expected. Nothing like trying to get beach camping or State/National Park reservations. The young man, William, took my reservation for 4 and everything was in order when I arrived 3 months later. Be sure to follow all the directions on their site. Good closed toe walking shoes and a full tank of gas is a must. Arrive with a picnic lunch, there are several great places to claim as your private desert paradise. You'll schedule a morning tour (10 or 11 am) or afternoon, 2pm, ‬

‪The Providence Mountains State Recreation Area (where the Mitchell Caverns are located) is about 16 miles off Interstate 40 between Barstow and Needles. It's fairly remote.
I have been to the surrounding Mojave Preserve more times than I can count, but have not been to the caverns. What a great place!
The view from the visitor center is worth the price of admission by itself. The entry fee is $10 per car and the tour is $10 per person. There are senior discounts.
Tours are two times per day , Friday thru Sunday. The tours frequently sell out, as there are only 15 people allowed on each tour. Once inside the caverns, you will see why. There is not a whole lot of room for too many people.
My tour started at 2pm on a Friday. I got there with alot of time to spare, so I walked the two nature trails nearby to kill time.
The tour started right on time with our guide and two extra employees to help with the safety of the guests if an incident arose.
The hike distance to the cave and the return trip is relatively short, but the terrain is uneven and there are staircases and tight spots, so if you have mobility issues or claustrophobia, this tour may not be for you.
If you plan to go, make reservations way ahead of time. The tours are very popular, and numbers are very limited. Listening to the tips given over the phone while I was there in the visitor center, you may be able to score a cancellation by calling late afternoon Monday. Reservations are done Mondays only. They do call you the Monday morning before your tour date (good morning Ranger Holly!) to confirm your reservation. If there is a cancellation, you might get in.
If you have been in any other caves recently, they do ask about that, as there is a condition called White Nose Syndrome that is killing bats.
Enjoy you visit, I certainly did.‬

‪I knew little about this hidden gem, but was able to make a road trip into an exciting weekend. You must make reservations online and they only accept to many reservations per day. Also, they typically book quick.

I learned a lot from the tour and it was another world in the cavern. Very well maintain and please no pets and respect nature..

Thanks‬

‪This place is incredible. First of all, the view from outside the caverns is beautiful. Overlooking the Mohave Desert at 4,300 feet elevation, you get a glimpse at where nature transitions between desert and mountain (with a little more desert than mountain). I could have sat and looked at the view for hours. The tour itself is amazing. The State Parks service and California Conservation Corps have maintained a safe, easy-to-navigate trail that curves around the mountain and into Mitchell Caverns. While outside, you learn about the history of the caverns and the animals and plants who live on the desert-like mountain. You enter the caverns through the "eyes" of the mountain (which is a stunning sight in itself), and once inside, the path is paved and lined with LED lights to show off the breathtaking cave formations. Our awesome tour guide, Will, kept us informed and entertained about how water works over millions of years to pick up and redeposit minerals, forming stalactites, stalagmites, and other unique structures that you'll only ever see in a place like this. We even saw a bat! $10 is a steal for a one-of-a-kind tour like this. The only "downside" is that the caverns are located far from civilization, so be prepared to drive at least several hours from wherever you are. But it's totally worth it! Highly recommended for families, solo trekkers, or couples who are looking for a date adventure.‬

‪California gem near Essex. About 22 miles off of I-40. Reservations needed. Two tours daily Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Cave has unique shield formation and other unusual ones. Two hour tour requires hike in, through the cave and then back to starting point. Backpacks, water etc are not allowed in cave and must be left at entrsnce‬

‪Definitely worth a visit. It's a long ways away from the major urban centers of Los Angeles and Las Vegas, so it does take some planning. Don't expect to drive up and get on a tour. You must make a reservation, which is only offered by phone on Mondays. Yes, odd, but I suspect the procedure has to do both with limited resources, and the intent to limit the number of people who do visit. Tours are limited to about 15 people each, and are only offered twice daily from Friday through Sunday. All of the effort is worth it. Total tour time from the gift shop and back is around 2 hours.‬

‪Before you start your guided tour of the caverns, you will be checking into the visitors center. The center offers historical information about Jack and Ida Mitchell and the start of their venture in the 1930's. There are archaeological exhibits and literature as well. It is a great way to start the experience. In addition to the exhibits there are two short trails. The Mary Beal Natural Trail, which guides you through the desert fauna and flora, is an excellent way to see just how alive the desert really is. The second trail is the Nina Mora Trail which takes you out to a butte offering a panoramic view of the surrounding desert. Both trails are about a half mile long and easy to navigate. This preface to the cavern tour is an outstanding way to round out your day at Mitchell caverns.   ‬
