My wife and I had been planning a trip to show my son snow for the first time for a few months. We bought snow gear and watched the weather incessantly. After a week of good snow fall in the mountains we thought now would be a good time. Even though we live less than 2 hours from Frazier park we rented a hotel room. With 2 littles we thought it best to have a base of operations close to the mountain. We arrived after dark on Friday so didn't have a chance to go up the mountain but we woke early and amazingly were able to eat and get the kids ready and left the hotel at 8am only to find that the mountain road was closed to non-residents. When we asked why they said, "too many people." It appears that residents of Frazier park don't like tourists and they actively try to discourage people from going there. I wish there were somewhere I could go to get my money back. I will not be planning a trip to Frazier park in the future.

A beautiful area in the winter and summer. However difficult to access due to road closures. Only one road to Mt.Pinos and it was for residents only during recent snow fall.

Were there for some sledding in winter. Garbage was everywhere. Chains required in snow. There's a police office in the town that needs to see your chains before you head up the mountain.

We drove to the top of Mt. Pinos in the middle of July during a heatwave in SoCal. When we got to the top it was high 60's and just beautiful. Large parking area and a beautiful meadow full of flowers and pine trees. We walked around a bit and there is also camping in this area. There were camping bathrooms (aka non-flushing toilets) near the campground. Plenty of picnic tables too, so it would be a nice place to bring a lunch and just hang out. There is also a hiking trail near the parking area.

Great place to visit the snow and play just to chill. There was a couple of feet of snow, we just pulled over before the Nordic Base and found a great little hill to sled down.
Easy drive from Santa Barbara, about 2:30 hours.
Great day trip to the snow with a low key atmosphere.

Beautiful,Clean and quiet. A gorgeous drive with crisp clean air. Very small mountain community that prides itself on keeping a tidy, well groomed town. Recommend a visit there.
Please, pack it in and pack it out. I read several reviews and some were from locals discouraged and tired of the tourists that leave trash, drive fast and are careless with their hometown. I can see this. Broken sleds, bags of trash...only seen in the sledding snow park areas. For goodness sakes people, take it home with you. Pay the Adventure Pass fee so this small community can recoup the costs of your visit. Come prepared. Bring chains if it’s snowing, wear proper attire.
Don’t love it to death. Treasure it.

My friend who lives in Castaic took me up here one day while I was visiting him. What a beautiful drive it was!! We ended up right at the end of the road . We took a small hike with some ice and snow still on the ground. I really enjoyed it!!

We were visiting family in SoCal. One trip was to Frazier Park. In looking for a place where there might be an easy hike, we chose Mt. Pinos. There is a two-mile hike up to the summit from the parking area at the end of Cuddy Valley/Mt. Pinos Road.
Elevation at the start is 8300', with its being about 8850'. The view from the summit encompasses the southern Central Valley, the southernmost Sierra Nevada, much of the Santa Barbara County Mountains, and the Caliente Range and more..
Nice trek for even "non-hikers" to try.

This was our first visit to Mt Pinos and we were looking forward to renting snow shoes or cross country skies to enjoy some snow fun. The website said there was a local rental shop but when we got there, we found out it had been closed for a few years. We were bummed. Other information online was unreliable as well and minimal. We had a hard time finding any maps of trails in the area, etc...
That being said, we really enjoyed our half day there once we got the lay of the land from a local waitress. Get up there early for parking or you will wait in line for a long time at the check point as traffic backs up, especially when chains are required. There are lots of trails and places to enjoy snow activities...snow shoeing, tobogganing, hiking, cross country skiing, etc...

What kind of snow might one expect tomorrow? I'd like to take a little family trip without the hassle of the ski resorts.

Sorry, just saw this. Check the weather report for that area. As it melts fast. Turns to ice if its not fresh snow. Ice isn't snow. We were there last winter and if you go all the way to Nordic camp it is snow. Bring very warm clothes and waterproof gloves/snow pants for kids.
