‪It exceeded my expectations! We stayed 3 nights at Portola Redwoods State park. Spacious and majestic state park is filled with natures wonders. I heard owls nightly, and many birds through t the day. As much as I was anticipating mosquitos it wasn’t bad at all. Our visit was 7/24-7/27/2022.
We brought citronella candles (4) and maybe it was effective? There’s a nice fire ring and a picnic table in each site. Clean Flush toilet and coin operated shower facility. Make sure to bring plenty quarters( $1.75 is enough for a nice hot shower), a pair of sandals, shampoo, soap for shower room. Bring Drinking water unless you are okay with faucet water that are located in every 3 sites. There’s a dishwashing station near the restroom. You need to bring dish soap but washing brush sponges are available at the station. Site 39 is isolated from others and nice but the walk to the restroom/dishwashing station can be very brutal long uphill.
Bring a bug zapper if you have one for yellow jacket bees. They become attracted to your food ( protein & honey) I don’t believe in killing but just in case. Brig a Binocular if you want to watch birds. Make sure to bring enough food as the shop doesn’t have food. They have ample firewood.‬

‪We decided to avoid the crowds at Muir Woods and came to Portola instead. We loved it. It was Memorial Day weekend so there were some people around, but I never felt crowded. We had a picnic lunch and hiked the two shortest trails with our four teens. The redwoods were amazing. The drive up and down is extremely windy. Bring some Dramamine. Vistas are amazing though.‬

‪If it’s a Saturday, ask for Sue :)
Remote, but worth it for great camping and local hikes. Everyone there was super helpful and kind from checking in to chatting about trails and the status of the poison oak. Sue, one of the volunteers, was particularly kind, helpful, and knowledgeable of the ecosystem and the trails accessible from the camp - as well as generally a joy to talk with. My husband and I were going back and forth about whether to do the 12 mile out and back up Slate Creek Trail, and Sue said if she could still do twelve miles, she’d do that trail. So this is for you, Sue - we did it and it was 1000% worth it!! The end loop is just magical, I don’t know how else to describe it. Took us 6 hours including two snack stops (two 30 year olds who haven’t hiked more than 5 miles in about a year). Steepest parts are just starting out and down into the valley loop with the creek and old growth redwoods. If you can hack it, take your time and be rewarded with one of a kind views. Wear long pants and long sleeves because of poison oak, though! One or two spots with overhead vines and a bit encroaching the trail at some spots - it was a good excuse to go slow :P trail is otherwise well kept, marked, and fairly trafficked.

We had campsite #2 which had 3 nice big redwoods. Right at the beginning of the grounds with a somewhat steep driveway, only shared an immediate area with #3, and in between is a little trail down to the creek. Crumb clean isn’t too difficult to manage for the sake of the endangered murrelet, and bear boxes were nice to have. Also highly recommend doing the Heritage Grove trail just 15 min away down Alpine Road - also a really super cool trail!‬

‪First let me say, I never get car sick. I don't know if it was all the coffee powering my trip up the coast, or the dried mango and garlic covered almonds from Gilroy, but it became apparent I needed to slow down taking all these curves through Saratoga to Portola Redwoods Campground. Then the skyline vistas and towering forests washed away any sickness and I found my groove withsome Elderbrook on the radio.

I arrived after the Ranger Station had closed, but there was a sheet hanging on a clipboard with open sites. I opted for the walk in group site, #61, and set up my little backpacking tent. Summer nights mean the sun goes down after 8, and I took the paved road a half mile to Iverson Trail and Tiptoe Falls to get a short hike in before sunset. Although this was no McCloud Falls, (or Burney Falls from my northern road trip) it was a well maintained, with choose your own adventure trails around the campground and park, offering different paths for hikers of all levels.

Portola Campground is perfect for large groups, organizations, and team building or agroup of friends. Add in some wine tours & me as the sober driver, we have moments of magic on the mountains. Back on the tree lined roads, creating moments in the pines. 108 is Magic.‬

‪Getting there is half of the adventure!! When you do arrive, you will be out "in the middle of nowhere" among redwoods and other trees, in a beautiful environment. This park is like a redwood oasis in the dryer hillsides of the northern Santa Cruz Mountains. Going there, do not rely on GPS or cellphones. Get directions before you head out! Even those from Mapquest and Google, though correct in directions are not correct in mileage. As you come down Alpine Road and Portola State Road, you may think you have gone the wrong way (not possible) as you seem to drive and drive down twisty and seemingly narrower and narrower roads! Especially on a hot summer day, it's a cooler and beautiful experience as you explore for the redwood trees in this hidden gem!‬

‪Camped two non-weekend nights in a beautiful quiet campsite. There are 5 RV sites with an RV length limit of 24’. The length limit is probably due to the narrow and curving roads driven to get to the spacious campsite.

Camp Host Mike was very welcoming with history and hiking information. Visitor Center host, Sarah, camped here with her family as a kid and she was also a great source of information. The Visitor Center sells cans of both Pepsi and Coke from their cooler.

The Visitor Center was built by the Islam Temple Shrine of San Francisco who owned the Redwood property as a summer retreat from 1924 to 1945 when they sold their operation to the State of California to create a new state park.‬

‪It's a pretty good drive from San Jose out to the State Park, but if you've never stood next to a Redwood, 100% worth the drive! We visited in December and didn't see another person in the park, although there were other cars. After a brief stop at the visitors center to get our bearings we headed up the "Old Tree" trail to have a look at the largest and oldest tree in the park. About 1/4 mile up the trail we encountered a bunch of storm damage I suppose as there were piles and piles of branches that blocked the path. Coming that far, and being from treeless Kansas, I wasn't going to be deterred by a few fallen trees! Oh my goodness, how small and humbled you feel next to this behemoth. I just love experiencing God's creation first hand, and no amount of U-tubin' or looking at pics online will ever do this place justice. I'd go back again if I'm in the area and highly recommend the visit. I believe there was a $5 park entrance fee.‬

‪My friends and I ended up here when we had to cancel our yearly trip to the Sierra mountains due to fires. It is a lovely place, full of giant and beautiful redwoods. The weather was hot (early August), but bearable because of all the shade. The visitor center was really nicely done and our group, consisting of several generations including young children, loved playing by the creek. My husband and I did the bike ride along Old Haul rode among the first and second generation redwoods, and it was great. We camped at the Ravine group campsite, and really enjoyed it. There was a water pump with drinkable water at the site and the clean bathrooms were a short walk away. The only downside was the mosquitoes are ravenous from about 5-8 pm. Bring repellent, candles, and a screenhouse. Other than that, Portola was perfect.‬
