When you see top 10 things to do in LA, LaBrea usually isn't listed.....why? Fabulous museum with dire wolf, mammoth, giant Sloth and other fossils still being unearthed from the target pits. Plus the bubbling tar/tar smell - place is unique and fascinating. Plus as an added advantage you are next to LACMA...modern art, which even if you don't want to go in has great outdoor display. No tat, no dusty stars... kids will love it too.

La Brea Tar Pits is a super interesting place to visit in the middle of Los Angeles. The self-guided tour will take most around an hour I would think. Great docents are available to answer questions and describe the things you are seeing.

Fascinating part of history. If you are interested in the past and what the world looked like back then. Museum was smaller than expected but still worth a visit.

Try interesting museum, the botanical garden was lovely and the actual tar pits were really unique. The excavation area was very interesting to see.

My wife thought I had traveled to many tourist attractions in both large and small cities.
You can explore the outside without paying any fee.
We paid the $18 fee per person to see the museum. It was worthwhile. It was fascinating to see skeletons of huge bears, ground sloths, mastodons, Sabre-tooth cats, etc.
We also paid an extra $6 per person and watched a 3-D movie about ice animals.
The tar pits very unique. We have never seen anything like it. For one thing, you can actually smell the tar.
The big tar pits are behind fences. However, there are a few small spots with tar bubbling up from the ground. They had construction cones to try to warn you to stay away from them. There were sticks that people had put in the tar. The consistency is like chocolate syrup that has been put in the refrigerator. If you were an animal who got stuck, it would be very hard to get out.
Overall, the experience was very worthwhile.

Excellent place to spend a day learning about our planet. Great for children too. Inside and outer displays and really well explained- we learnt a great deal.

Unique glimpse into prehistoric life. The active fossil site showcases tar pits that have preserved the remains of ice age mammals, which you can see being excavated. It's educational and intriguing stop for history and science enthusiasts a like.

The park is beautifully landscaped. Everywhere you can get well informed and then you feel like seeing what was recovered there and visiting the museum fulfills this wish in a really well staged way. The museum is very small but really lovingly built with nice dedicated staff.
A bit of a shame were the somewhat hefty parking fees of 18$, because you don't really make a whole day trip here.

Very interesting. Small museum, can do it within an hour, if you include the 3D Theatre part.
The outside grounds, which is free, is great but can be done within half an hour.
It’s easy to get to and of the weather is good, it’s nice for a stroll outside.

Let me preface this by saying we love all things dinosaurs and fossils, and this has been on my bucket list for a long time. I was just happy to see the actual tar pits.
That said, the museum is pretty small, and while the exhibits in there are really cool, there isn't much. The pits themselves are cool to view and include signage, but the active site was closed and could not be viewed.
I think a few hands-on exhibits for younger children would really take this place up a notch, and it wouldn't be hard to have like a dino dig/fossil dig area, like many parks do.
We really liked the exhibit where you tried to pull something up out of tar to show how hard it was for the animals to escape. I think more interactive exhibits could be what's needed to engage older children more.
Overall, if your family loves fossils, science, or dinosaurs like we do, you'll enjoy it regardless.

Sorry I didn't see this. I don't remember much of a fee.

Does the outside portion have different hours than opening at 9:30 a.m. like the museum?

besides the farmers market, is there a cafe inside or close by that we can grab some lunch within a short walking distance?
كُتب بتاريخ 1 فبراير 2019
There is a nice Starbucks down the street and many others cafes and coffee shops. The Petersen Auto Museum has a real nice coffee shop and it’s nearby.

how much time should i allocate to see the pits and museum?
كُتب بتاريخ 18 يناير 2019
Depending on the age of the group I suggest 2 hours plus. If you take part in any of the guided activities or watch the movie then allow more. For food we recommend going up Fairfax Ave for a few blocks to the LA Farmers Market. This is a real gem, has plenty of fantastic food, handmade ice cream and lots and lots of shade.

I was reading some of the reviews online and saw photos of an open pit with bones that you can look down into. It looked like an active dig site. Is that still open? Where is it? We just visited and never saw anything like that even though we took the guided tour. We saw Project 23, but everything was in boxes there.

We were there first week in July we saw open digs not sure why you didn’t!

hi - does anyone know if there is free wifi @ the tar pits - thank you
كُتب بتاريخ 5 أبريل 2018
I don't think so -- I didn't see any signs for free wifi and it's not referenced in their site. On that note my cell phone reception at the museum was a bit slow - with text messages delayed.

Is there any problem getting a parking space in the lot? We will be going around 10 a.m. on Saturday. Thanks for any advice!
كُتب بتاريخ 18 أكتوبر 2017
There is a large parking lot behind the museum. It is not free to park in it though. I think it was $12. You can also park on the streets around it but it is tight around there and there are meters. There is no time limit to park in the parking lot, just until the museum closes. There are also another museums or two next to the pits so if you wanted to look into them you could leave your car in the lot and just walk to them as well.

We have a 9 hour layover in LAX, actually less after going through customs, and we would like to see La Brea Tar Pits during that time. About how much could we expect to spend for a Uber or Taxi ride there from LAX, (it's 10 miles). Also, are there lockers at LAX for us to stow our carry-on bags, outside of security because we'll be coming from the international terminal and we would want to stow them before we go through security at the domestic terminal. We don't land until 11:40 so figure it takes us 1 hour minimum to get through customs, we wouldn't leave the airport until probably at least 1:00 and they close at 5:00, would that work?
كُتب بتاريخ 23 أغسطس 2017
Hi Carol/Joe,
Not sure on the lockers at LAX, but being such a big airport, I bet they have something available. Might check the airport website on that one.
As far as the Tar Pits are concerned, I think you should have plenty of time. LA traffic is unpredictable, but you've given yourself a big enough window to do the Tar Pits and LACMA, if you wanted to (next to each other).
