‪The road is narrow and winds but the views are beautiful. A nice drive within daytripping distance from Calgary.‬

‪We've been through this valley several times in 2021 already, and many times during the COVID period. Our experience has been that on weekends, even in the winter, popular places can be overrun, so perhaps not a good place for those who are squeamish about crowded places. The lesser known trails and trailheads might be a solution, as would trying to visit during the week. Within the Kananaskis Valley you'll find two provincial parks (Peter Lougheed and Spray Valley) which have the best developed year-round trail options for hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. We use the Valley for day trips from Calgary, and don't know much about the camping. Kananaskis Village has hotel accommodation, along with restaurants and shops, a golf course, a good campground that might be running all year (we don't know), and of course Nakiska Ski area. If you're just in for scenics, a drive in and out should net some great pictures and nice experiences. If you're active, do your research and you should be able to find an activity that suites your ability and skill level. For those squeamish about pit toilets may want to stay away. With all the info centres closed, the only flush toilets are in the village or at the Fortress Mountain gas station. On our last visit, they had done a decent job keeping the road clear of ice and snow, but still, always be cautious driving in the mountains in the winter. Due to the info centres STILL being closed, we bumped the rating down.‬

‪Visited in late January. The canyon is a pretty hike, easy enough for our family with a 9 and 7 year old. Conditions can be icy in winter so cleats/spikes are recommended. Rounding corners of the canyon reveals stunning views - glimpses of the mountains and frozen waterfalls. We hiked about 2 hours (1 in, 1 back). Care is needed around open water areas and on ice.
There is an outhouse and a couple benches at the trailhead.‬

‪The Kananaskis Valley is a piece of paradise in Calgary’s own backyard. During the summer of 2020, I made several trips to Kananaskis, sometimes you do not realize what you have until something like COVID emerges, thank goodness Kananaskis is so close by!‬

‪Still stunningly beautiful on the whole, but the poplar trails and beauty spots are a bit overrun and parking is hard to find, with so many locals with time on their hands due to COVID. We're seeing more litter like discarded Kleenex, orange peels, and dog-poop bags tossed into the bushes. Day use areas are open. Be prepared with your own hand sanitizer and toilet paper - on our recent trips, 50% of the pit toilets are kept closed at any one time. Campgrounds are open at 50% capacity, this includes reserveable and first come, first served campgrounds. Second RV units will not be permitted on campsites, and only one household or cohort family permitted per site. Shared facilities, showers, picnic shelters and playgrounds are still currently closed due to COVID. All the visitor centres are closed, so those new to the area and needing some guidance are out of luck. Although the closing of the visitor centres is ostensibly due to COVID, the government has announced already for cost savings that many services will never reopen in the parks, and are actually in the process of shedding parks and public lands throughout Alberta. Not a sign that visitors are wanted or welcome...‬

‪We love the Kananaskis! It quieter & the mountain scenery is closer and even more spectacular than Banff. It is also where so many TV series and Movies have been filmed. Many visitors drive through the Kananaskis to get to Banff/Jasper from Glacier and Waterton Lakes in the USA.

The exact fully paved route is the #6 south from Waterton Lakes > Pincher Creek > catch the #3 heading west for a few miles > #22 north to Longview. From Longview head west on the 541 > #40 heading north.

You are now in the Kananaskis Valley. Along the #40 you will find scenery beyond belief, lakes and hikes and photo stops. Eventually as you near its northern end...you arrive at Kananaskis Village where you can also stay at the Marriott Resort, or camp, play golf, plan hikes or photo walks. Its a really nice stop after the long beautiful route you will have taken as described.

From Kananaskis Village its only a few miles to catch the Canada #1 heading to Canmore and finally into Banff Township. We often stay in Canmore as its a quaint and vibrant town nestled up against the mountain peaks. It has nice shops, restaurants and nice, but normally less expensive hotels and motels. If you are arriving to Banff at the end of a long driving day, you can save $ for that night before actually heading into Banff in the morning.
=====
Its beautiful down in Kananaskis Valley in Winter too but you must access it from the #1 onto the 40 since the road over the big pass at its southern end is closed during the Winter.

If you are looking forward to this drive in the shoulder seasons, ask ahead to verify that it is open or not. Snow or other weather events like river flooding can close the road early in the Fall or cause it to open later in the late Spring.
=====
Once you take this drive, you may never use the “freeway route” from Glacier to Calgary and then into Banff again. Both routes actually take the same amount of time to “drive" because of stop lights in towns straddling the freeway heading up and Calgary traffic. What can and probably will slow you down are all the photo stops along the way, short hikes, a stop for a picnic or finally at the Village for coffee, snacks or restrooms.

The freeway route is also way out east of the mountains where as the #22 portion runs right up along the front range of the Rockies.‬

‪The road up the Kananaskis Valley is well maintained in the winter. All the campgrounds are closed except the all-year campground near Kananaskis Village and the golf course. But Peter Lougheed Provincial Park is open, and has the best cross-country skiing in the region. The visitor information centre in PLPP is a beautiful place to see, and we enjoy having our picnic lunch inside, but there's a fascinating museum there too. Also, they have the only flush toilets here on this end of the park. But you can just drive to the lakes and enjoy stunning views of the Rockies. On our last visit, we had brought a relative there, and he was totally impressed with the area.‬

‪You can make this a loop drive from Canmore in either direction by taking the 742 in one direction then the 40 back to the Trans Canada. Allow plenty of time as you’ll be stopping for photos very, very often. The mountains are much closer to the road than on other drives & we were lucky to complete the drive after the first fall snow so everything looked pristine & beautiful. There are plenty of picnic stops, lakes and hikes. Check the road conditions before heading off as much of the road is unpaved and may not be accessible after heavy snow or could be dangerous if icy.‬
