This area has trails along high cliffs that offer spectacular views. It also has a short path down several steps to a small but beautiful beach. Pristine white sand is set against rocky cliffs. The water was a gorgeous shade of sea green when we were there. The beach was soft, clean sand except for some seaweed and dead jellyfish. Great spot for flying a kite too.

We spent about 2 1/2 hours walking back on the trail to the wooden walkway around the Pygmy Forest. The Ocean part of the park is more gratifying.

Perhaps one for the most gorgeous areas (many of them) along the California coast.
Lots of places for kids to enjoy and discover, not crowded, huge areas to play, in both high and low tides.

We stopped here for a pit stop and to eat our lunch before hiking along and above the coast. The views are very good and the trails are easy. They have a pygmy forest that is interesting to walk through before heading back to the parking lot. Recommended.

Spend a long time and hike from the sea up the winding path (fit for hikers, not casual strollers) to the many terraced forests until you reach the dwarfed trees of the fabled "Pygmy Forest" of trees so old their small stature belie their age. Take a picnic and spend the day between the forests and the sea.

It was great weather that day in Oct and the short hike over to the cliffs provided another beautiful view of the California coast.

Lovely hike through the woods then a climb down to the beach, not a hard walk but not super accessible. Great rock formations and a pristine beach. Well worth the stop.

There are so many state parks in the area. I loved gathering information about this area and seeking out trails. It’s name has to do with the shape of the park—a jughandle, of course! Be sure to seek out the Pygmy Forest as well.

The day we visited the Jughandle State Reserve there were no maps available at the start of the trail. There also was no map posted behind the glass encasement to review. We went off of an article we read in the Wall street Journal that ended up not being very clear. In the beginning the trail was overgrown and very confusing.
Not so far into the trail is a side path to a beach...the beach is superb.
We went as far as mile marker 26 but did not see the Pygmy forest or the sand dunes...how much farther were they? We left confused on that as there were no maps to consult. Even with the confusion it was a great hike and we enjoyed ourselves very much.
There is a good sized parking lot.

My husband and I enjoy taking pictures, don't mind a mile walk to see views, etc.
any suggestions?

It's a small beach but don't let that stop you. It's very beautiful and well worth the walk down the stairs. You can either swim, chase the waves or explore the rocks and tide pools on the left.

Agree with drheathr, trail is mostly level and walking speed after the beginning steep decline. However trail map says that it is 5 miles long one way and there is no alternate return route, just one way in and one way out. But it didn't feel like 5 miles long, and it's mostly shaded.

I was at the park for a wedding. We used the trail down to the beach. Some of the steps are irregular in height and position, but it is an easy trail. If a bride can do it in her gown and guests ranging from 6 months into their 60s can do it there should be no problem.
There is a trail that covers the ecological staircase up to the pygmy forest. It runs under the bridge and up the slope through the forest away from the ocean. Although this was in the plans for the wedding weekend, timing and organization kept me from the this.
