‪I've stayed in the Laguna campsite on Mount Laguna 3 times in the past couple of months. Not only is it a gorgeous area for camping, the campsites are very well cared for. Beth, the manager, is great - very friendly and willing to help. I highly recommend this campground.‬

‪Première expérience camping en Californie ; un peu frais en Avril mais le contact avec la nature, les espaces feux aménagés, la dimension des emplacements ont contribué à en faire un séjour inoubliable.‬

‪Nice 1-mile loop on a wide rocky path. Lots of bees and butterflies feasting on the Butterfly bush. Sweeping views. ‬

‪We travelled about 55 miles from Coronado, CA (less than one hour) for a day hike in the Laguna Mountain Recreation Area. We chose the Sunset Trail which is the first available trailhead up the Sunrise Highway from Interstate 8 at mileage marker 19. Most of the parking requires a Forest Service day pass (available at the visitor center) or an America the Beautiful or Senior National Park Pass. There are two trails at the trailhead, but both lead to the same pond called Water of the Woods. Round trip from the pond is 3 to 3.2 miles or so, but you can extend the hike by continuing on the sunset trail further north around Big Laguna Lake. The trail off to the left is for hikers only. The one on the right is for hikers and mountain bikers. The left trail is somewhat rutted in places but has very nice mountain views and climbs through meadows and pine forrests. There are some minor rock climbs and descents. The trail on the right is wider and smoother but has mountain bikers, all of whom were very polite and respectful of hikers. Beware of annoying flies at certain times of the year, so bring insect repellent. Enjoy the fresh pine scented mountain air.‬

‪VISTAS SO DRAMATIC, MAKES YOU WANT TO SING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. In October 2018, I visited Laguna Mountain two weekends in a row. I decided that the views from the cliffs overlooking Anza Borrego Desert State Park were magical and compelling enough for repeat visits to the Sunrise Highway. Several trailheads can be found along Sunrise Highway, and each provides a short trail (about 20 minutes hiking time) that takes you to PACIFIC CREST TRAIL (goes south to north), where a minute or so further east brings you to the edge of a steep embankmant with lookout points just to the east of Pacific Crest Trail that provide a vista of ANZA BORREGO DESERT STATE PARK. My drive was from San Diego east on Route 8. The driving time from Route 8 to the gift shop at Laguna Mtn. is only about 20 minutes. This drive is along a pleasant winding road (there are no treacherous turns on this road). On this road, at first the scenery is mountain without forests, but with many huge boulders, as is found on Woodson Mountain and Iron Mountain, both located in Poway, CA. And then, a bit further north on Sunrise Highway, the scenery near the road takes the form of a mixture of meadows and forests (without boulders). For my first visit, I took a camera and took pictures from the area of Desert View Picnic Site and nearby Monument Peak Road (a little road that goes to a radar dome). Once on Monument Peak Road, you can wander on foot down the steep mountainside and get panoramic photos of the wild out-of-doors with yucca in the foreground and Anza Borrego Desert in the background. Then, I drove north on Sunrise Highway over to Garnet Peak, which is about as far as you can get on Sunrise Highway and still have great views of the desert. At Garnet Peak, I also got some nice photos of Anza Borrego Desert, with yucca in the foreground. A short drive farther to the north, brings you to the town of Julian. Julian is a charming tourist trap, sometimes with swarming crowds lining up for apple pie, pizza, or beer (depending on where the line is). Also, sometimes there is not any line. For apple pie, I recommend MOM'S. For applie pie at MOM'S, if it is crowded at their downtown location, then instead, one should go to the location of MOM'S which is just a couple of miles to the west (west on the highway that goes to Ramona). I've been to both locations of MOM'S, each on three occasions. My great discovery was cinnamon-flavored ice cream. This was the first time ever that I'd encountered cinnamon-flavored vanilla ice cream, and I totally recommend that you order it with your slice of apple pie.

SOUVENIR-MANIA. During my two visits to Laguna Mountain, I went to the main gift shop and bought a couple of leather purses and some other souvenirs. But during my second visit, a week later, I went to the smaller gift shop which is located about 50 feet north of the big gift shop, and there I bought a couple of maps. During my second visit, I returned with aerobic exercise on the mind. And so, I parked at Desert View Picnic Area and hiked the PACIFIC CREST TRAIL northwards past Foster Peak and eventually to Garnet Peak. This time, I left the camera behind, and instead brought a half gallon of chocolate milk, which was only $2.50 from Trader Joe's. Then, I hiked all the way back to Desert View Picnic Area. The round-trip hike was about 12 miles round trip. During my second visit, I stopped at the visitor's center, which is located about 50 feet to the north from the gift shop. At the visitor's center, I bought more souvenirs (cloth patches, colorful maps, book on Kumeyaay ethnobotany).

EPILOGUE. For the next weekend (October 13, 2018), I went to Joshua Tree National Park. In the morning, I visited Black Rock Canyon and hiked the Panorama Loop Trail and obtained a nice aerobic workout. ‬

‪We had a great time. We stayed in Laguna Campground, site 68. The site was perfect and not too close to neighbors. We did the Lightning Ridge Trail in the morning Saturday (about 2 miles, moderate due to going up hill) and the entire Laguna Meadow loop in the afternoon (about 12 miles, easy and flat - tons of great spots to stop and chill or climb rocks). Tons of mountain bikers, but as hikers, this didn't bother us as everyone was so polite! Would recommend and we will be back soon!‬

‪The camp sites are great. There is water available, chipped wood to setup your camp fire and the letrines are mostly clean. There are 6 minutes coined showers avilable. The camp site can fit three cars or a large RV. The stay cost $24.00 for two cars and $9.00 for the third one. Extra ones staying the day only is $5.00. Well guarded, the park ranger will come to check on you and will warn you to lower your noise after 10:00pm. If not, you will be asked to leave. Recommend to go during the summer months or be ready to freeze at night. Great place to camp, come and enjoy!‬

‪We go to the Laguna Mountain Recreation Area about 2-3 times a month during the Spring, Summer and Fall months. Pack a lunch and find a nice quiet place to enjoy. Lots of places to hike around or just walk around and enjoy the beauty of the Pines and Mountains. ‬

‪This is a nice area to get away for a few days or maybe just for a day hike. Many trails and a nice campground in the area. There are also some cabins for rent. You need a pass in order to hike the trails. You can buy the pass at the store.
The campground is very nice, but it fills up on weekends. There are pay showers and toilet facilities at the campground. Can reserve online.

Wooded hill nature trail at laguna mountain recreation area is a good trail. A pass is needed or display senior pass. The senior pass is the America the beautiful senior pass for American citizens 62 or older. At this trail you have a choice of 1/2 mile or 1.5 mile trails through oak/conifer forest with patches of grasses. Nice flowers even in early September. Many birds such as White-breasted nuthatches, woodpeckers etc. No facilities.‬
