This was our first time going to Oakland zoo. We’ve been to Fresno numerous times (also nice) and Sacramento once (average) and we were very pleasantly surprised at how nice and large Oakland zoo is.
Our friends told us they added the upper part of the zoo somewhat recently. You access it via a free gondola ride which is very nice and we could see Oakland and San Francisco clearly on the day we attended. The upper portion of the zoo has a lot of American west animals such as bears, bison, mountain lion, condors, bald eagles, wolves etc. The lower section has your African and Asian animals. They have giraffes, elephants, lions, hyenas, etc. Don’t remember seeing a rhino or hippo but otherwise they had most of the animals you would expect to see.
Also there is an area with some rides for kids that was reasonably priced. Our daughter rode the carousel once.
We went for free due to our friends being members but when we checked online for pricing it seemed reasonable. Around $20 I think.

Wonderful wonderful ! For a “smaller “ zoo there is so much! You can tell the love for the zoo, animals, guests. Clean and fun and safe. There’s an overhead tram and little train too.

We became members when the Zoo was in trouble early during the pandemic, and we just never got around to going to the Zoo. Well we went today and it was lovely and sweet. It's a small zoo with an emphasis on African life. But there is also a California Trail with California animals, but access with the gondolas was closed due to high winds. Very nice landscaping. Great family place. Bring your own food.

The zoo is located on a hillside and has a number of open field exhibits for the animals to wander around. The cable car ride to the top area is very unique. Not sure of the price value for admission since we were guests of other family. Appears to have a large amount of land for future expansion.

We took our grandkids for the afternoon and we had a great time. Kids were 9 and 11 so we skipped some of the children's area. Make sure you make time to ride the gondola up to the upper area. Nice exhibits and amazing views, plus a place to get food. A place for kids to do a scavenger hunt at the little nature center up there. The animals looked nice and the park was clean. At the upper entrance there are a few kids rides, a train, kiddie rides, merry go round, and a chair ride which I like more than I though I would. It takes you over a good part of the park with views only from the ride. Good day, I think you can pay for parking and admission ahead of time, gives you a chance to park nearer to the 2 entrances. Loved it. Thank you Oakland Zoo.

I met my niece and her child here, thinking it would be a typical downtown zoo with sad exhibits and depressed animals. On the contrary they seem to do a really nice job of keeping the animals happy with big space, and I guess "state of the art" exhibits!

This was my first trip to the Oakland zoo. And already I liked it better than the San Francisco zoo. You still have to wear you mask unless your dining. I loved see all the animals. And the gondola makes the zoo extra special because of the views. Oakland has the best views of the entire bay. You can see everything. My only complaint about the zoo is the food. Of your able to eat real food before you get there, by all means do it. They have a kids chicken tender meal for $8 and it is literally one giant chicken tender and it is very bland. The peanut butter and jelly meal is just a pre-packaged smuckers on & j. If you decide to get burgers just know they are pre made and ice cold. If you like sauce, I would recommend asking for it on the side. Because it’s a glob of sauce if you don’t. Overall my family had a wonderful time, we just wish we didn’t eat the food. If you have to eat just stick to water and snacks. Don’t order the burgers or chicken tender meal.

Great day trip. Very manageable size of the zoo. Newly added gondola ride is excellent and rides are included in the admission price. The otter aquarium is nicely arranged that kids can have a very close encounter with the lively otters. The day we were there, the bears at the top on the mountain had a playful fight which entertained the kids a lot. The food at the cafe at the top of the gondola ride actually taste pretty good for these type of venues. But the seatings are limited. The out door section is too for this time of the year. Make sure you dress warm. We also enjoyed the train rides at the amusement park next door. Attached are pic of a pack of wolf.

Is it so very hard to believe we were last here just 9 months ago. Seems like yesterday, yet so much has changed.
The family needed a safe, fun place to spend some Thanksgiving calories, so our first choice was the zoo. Luckily, they are open (as of this writing!) and of course using whatever limitations and health routines they can to ensure our safety, the safety of the animals and stay open as much as possible to keep money coming in to this great place.
We made an on-line reservation (required - no walk up admission purchases) as they are spacing entrance admissions. We were also limited to members of our household. And, of course, masks for all 3 years of age and older.
Parking was easy, and we had no stroller so got in quickly - let the fun begin!
As I mentioned, much has changed. Some changes and closures we knew of ahead of time, but others we learned as we went.
The main closures we expected were the Adventure Landing (rides and train), the bug house and amphibian house, playgrounds, and the petting area. Surprisingly, the food services (Landing Café, Tuskers Grill, Giraffe Ridge, and food carts) were open, but no indoor seating. We didn't know this so took plenty of drinks and snacks. There is outdoor tables available, and the ones outside the Landing Cafe were being actively cleaned while we rested there, even if no one had been sitting there.
The gondola up the hilltop to California Trail was open as well, with cabins being sprayed down between trips (and I saw a commercial fogger at the landing as well) and everybody getting a shot of hand sanitizer before boarding, both up and down.
Most animals were accessible, other than those mentioned and areas like the kangaroo area usually accessible by the train. Indoor exhibits were closed as well.
There was a good group of people out today, and it was good to see families and energetic kids getting a day of fresh air and animals. Most of the time it was easy to distance, and a few areas were crowded, due to the in-and-out design, such as the elephants, the lions, the warthogs and such, but people did well in general and most of the time we were not even near people! The animals were likewise distancing, and it was elusive time for coyotes, jaguars, mountain lions and black bears - did see a lone grizzly though! I guess I'd sleep in on a cold November morning too - yet here we were!
One unexpected pleasure was all the sculptures set up for the zoo's "night lights" offering. TONS of animals and plants all around the zoo, colorful and ready for a dusk display - but they were amazingly beautiful in the daytime as well! A really cool extra treat this visit.
Overall we enjoyed the zoo for a little over 2 hours. We visited all that was open, but without rides, playgrounds, petting zoo, indoor exhibits and sit down snack times, it was well under our average four hour visit. But a great day for getting back to a semi-normal day at the zoo. Hope there will be more in coming months - maybe a night visit!

We are thinking of doing my daughters birthday there but keeping it small (12 people maybe). Are the picnic sites busy? I don’t want to spend 250 to rent a site up to 40 people when there will only be 12 of us but would like a place to eat with the fam.

You should be ok, i think the "busy" affect would depend on if its a special weekend outside of your daughter's birthday, Ie a holiday weekend

Is the Zoo pet friendly?
"Dogs or other pets are not allowed on Zoo grounds or in parking areas."
"Individuals with disabilities may bring their service dogs to the Zoo. Download our Service Dog Policy for more information and a Service Dog Map to better understand where service dogs are allowed within the zoo."
If I buy tickets online, how long it will be valid?

Just buy tickets when you visit. That way, you won't have anything to be concerned about!
Can you bring food into the park?

Yes. That's what makes this zoo so great. The place seems to run on quite a bit of common sense. They understand with kids you need to bring in a lot of stuff and they accommodate you for that...
My mother is 91 and has difficulty walking long distances. Do you rent wheel chairs?

Is there a drop off and pick up area for guests who get a ride? My husband is going to drop my daughter and me off, then he will go run arrands nearby for a couple hours before picking us up. I hope we don't need to pay parking this way?

Yes you can drop off at the gate or the park
The web site should make clear whether the zoo actually closes at 4 p.m. or just stops letting people in, & what time it DOES close. It should also discuss winter vs. summer hours, weekend vs. weekday hours, etc.
Oakland Zoo
Oakland, كاليفورنيا
Admission closes at 4pm. We do post the new hours on the website when they change for summer, winter, etc. We announce that change on social media channels and the website.
