‪Don’t bother trying to visit. Travelled 40 minutes to visit. Parking lot closed (Docent remarked w pride that it would never reopen…hard to understand why he was happy that cars forced to park on loose sand on shoulder of busy road). Boardwalks closed. Trails and steps in much disrepair. Handrails falling down or at knee level, steps 2 ft or more high. I’ve been to site a dozen times in past 10 years. Won’t go again, it’s a mess and very uninviting. Complete lack of maintenance resulting in a wasted experience in a place that used to be so inviting.‬

‪A great place to hike. The boardwalk was closed because of all the rain earlier in the month, but we were able to hike over to the pond and other areas nearby. This is a nice, flat and sandy hike for all ages. The path is low, so it is a good place to get out of the wind. It feels warm on the sand. Lovely palm trees.‬

‪Long drive in to find out parking lot was closed due to bad previous weather but also no pets allowed, we drove 5 days from home with our dog, another 2 hours to this site to find out no parking, no pets, and not actually part of any fault line! Time wasted, cheers‬

‪The parking lot and visitor center are still closed after the flooding, but you can park along the main highway and the Oasis is definitely worth a visit. We hiked the Mumawet trail and it was fantastic! It's not a difficult hike, but there is elevation gain of a few hundred feet. We walked back along the Horseshoe Oasis and thoroughly enjoyed the day.‬

‪This is a short drive from down, while the visitor center is closed and parking lot blocked off (visitors parked along the highway near the main entrance), there is no entrance fee. We went in the morning while the temperature was still cool, that made it perfect for hiking as some of the trails are in full sun.

There was a ranger on site that explained the area and history. Donation box was available for anyone that wanted to contribute to the maintenance of the preserve. We explored the McCallum trail that started out in a lush growth of palm trees. The boardwalk took us through the water from the springs along the San Andreas fault, all in the welcomed shade.

The trail continued towards Simone Pond, that got very sandy so wear appropriate shoes. We continued up slightly in elevation and got to the vista point for a great sweeping of the area. Definitely worth the extra 1/2 miles. Wild flowers were flourishing even in mid December. It was spectacular!

We spent less than 3 hours here. If we had more time, would have went for the San Andrea Fault trail. Good find. It is a hidden gem for sure.‬

‪Had a great hiking experience. Easy trails through the oasis and into the desert. It was a shame the small pond was closed due to staffing. Dont miss the fault line‬

‪I've been enjoying this preserve since 2006, visiting frequently when we are in the area. What was once a friendly and welcoming place for nice desert hikes has become an over-managed, full of "we don't really want you here" signs, fences, and closed areas.

Disclaimer: before continuing, this is still an OK place to take a walk, the scenery is still OK if you ignore all the signs and fences.

For years when I came here, the palm-built shack had volunteers daily, where you could stop in for some friendly information, get a map, leave a donation, see about what wildlife etc. was in the area and more. The last few years, the shack is always closed. Where there once were little signs identifying the desert plants along the main oasis trail, now it's full of signs saying "stay on the trail!!", "Keep out!!", "closed!!" and other such welcoming signs. What used to be the McCallum pond, a lovely little oasis pond, has now been renamed to the "Simone pond" (who is Simone and why?), and to add to it, you can't get there because they've spent their time surrounding it with fencing and barbed wire, along with signs that say it will be open to visitors "when possible". (Meaning of course that we, the unwashed public, are too uncaring and stupid to visit it by ourselves, we must have a volunteer to accompany us so we don't ruin everything.

And yes, they have a parking lot, except the gate is always closed, even when the signs say it's open, so you have to park out on the highway. If you do go through the pedestrian gate, you're admonished to get out by 5PM. Why? So the volunteers, or whoever's running the place now can wander around and enjoy their preserve without us bothering them?

Whoever's running this should take a lesson from the national parks...they're there for the people, not for the employees and others they decide to allow in. They've done a tremendous amount of work marking trails and putting up signs and fences, but they can't staff the visitor shack, or open the parking lot, or do much of anything anymore. They used to offer bird, wildlife, and plant walks guided by volunteers, now they're apparently too busy making signs and putting up fences and marking trails so you don't ever set foot off that trail because you'll destroy something. But of course they can set foot off the trails, because THEY know what they're doing.

What a shame, after all the work that was done to make it a nice place back in 2006-2015, the people in charge now seem to be saying "We're usually closed, but if you must come here, stay on the trail, don't touch anything, and get out by 5 so we can enjoy it without a bunch of people running around. And stay out on Monday or Tuesday also."

Really? Hiking trails that require a tour guide and only at bankers' hours?

So go there, take a nice walk, but sadly it's not a shadow of what it once was.‬
