What a great place, it covers the history of the railroad, the people involved, the places and conditions. The exhibits are great and are dressed ie with tableware etc.. and one of the trains rocks as though it’s moving. There is also a fantastic model railway exhibition.
Definitely worth a visit.

We really enjoyed our trip to the California State Railroad Museum. There are lots of beautiful American 4-4-0 locomotives from the 1870's era and the last Cab Forward in existence, the Southern Pacific 4294, where you can go into the cab and sit in the Engineers or Fireman's seat. There is also a box car, a Post office car, a sleeper car and a dining car you can walk thru.
A few years ago they added to the 3rd floor a Model Railroading exhibit called the Magic of Scale Model Railroading with assistance of the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) which is great info if you think you are interested in starting in the Model Train hobby. There are also some excellent different scale model railroad layouts and they even have the control panels belonging to the greatest model railroader of all time, John Allen who designed and created the Gorre & Daphetid layout, that burned up in a fire in his house on display. On the 3rd floor is also an area for children to play in. They also have on Fridays from 10 - 12 noon a model train repair booth.
There is also a really nice gift shop for books, videos, T shirts and coffee cups. It's located in old town Sacramento with lots of shops & restaurants in the area. Parking is in a parking garage right across the street.

I loved touring this museum, stepping inside the old trains, and learning the history of the building of our railways. Fascinating. I especially loved the posted information about the women who not only supported the men, but also helped pave the way for future women in the railroad museum. We need to give more credit to Chinese-Americans, who risked their lives and were poorly compensated in building our railway system.
As an aside, if you want to ride one of their trains, make a reservation early.
The Railroad Museum train ride - The Polar Express - is sold out for the season!

Loved being here and get to know more about railroad and trains. My favorite was the train toys. Gift shop really cool and entrance price 12$per adult. Good price for all I got to see.

The California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento has been a favourite with me since it opened in the early 1980s. We have been there many times, most recently in October 2023.
It is fitting that the museum is in this location, in Old Sacramento, Sacramento having been the home for the businesses of the Big Four (Stanford, Crocker, Hopkins, and Huntington) who founded the Central Pacific Railroad. Their business was practically on this same spot, and they were instrumental in creating the Transcontinental Railroad from here, making Sacramento the railway hub of California with the largest railway complex in the western US.
The museum is large and has many railroad engines and cars from California's history on display. These include important engines like the Sonoma, a prime 4-4-0 American; the C.P. Huntington, and the Central Pacific Commissioner's Car, which was used at the ceremony for driving the Gold Spike completing the Trans-Continental Railroad. There are displays on the construction of the railroad's western section from Sacramento through the Sierra Nevada; the roles of Chinese immigrant workers, and more. An identical Gold Spike, cast at the same time as the one used in the ceremony, is on display as well, with the painting commemorating the ceremony.
There are passenger and dining cars which one can walk through, as well. Upstairs are extensive model train setups, displays, and interactive toys, etc., for kids.
The museum is nice and well-laid out.

We had a few hours to kill before our flight home. What a nice surprise. We are not RR buffs, but the California history and the amazing railroad displays were a winner. We enjoyed the train cars that were restored to historic accuracy and allowed us to walk through. The docents were great with info and fun facts. Definitely worth a visit.

This is a truly remarkable collection of both real and model trains! It’s a great place to learn about the history of trains too! We learned about the Chinese rail workers that helped build the first transcontinental railroad! The golden spike was cool to see too! The have various engines, dining cars, mail cars, sleepers, box cars and even an engine built for clearing snow! It’s situated in the old town area of Sacramento and fits in perfectly! I highly recommend visiting this place! It’s both fun and educational with great photo ops!

I've been to multiple railroad museums across the country and this one, BY FAR, stands out from all the rest. It also has a world-class model train exhibit as well.

At the entrance of the museum, there is a very large steam locomotive, is that a big boy?
(if so why is it not acknowledge as 1 of the 8 big boys in existence in the U.S.)

Logjamb's answer is correct. The SP 4294 is a similar, large articulated engine, but cab-forward and one of a separate class built for Southern Pacific. It is, according to the museum, the only surviving example of this specific engine class.

About how long does it typically take to walk through the museum? How many hours do people budget for this excursion? Thanks!

I walked through it with my 5 year old grandson. He went through parts of it twice. We also watched the short movie and shopped in the gift store. It took about 2 hours, but you might not love it as much as we did! But, you might.

Is there a train from the museum that will take you to San Franscisco and back for the day?

No, this museum is not a working railroad. However, the Amtrak to the bay is located about 1/2 mile from the Museum...and that will get you to/from SF in one day. Uber/Lyft from museum to Amtrak is only $7!

If you don't mind walking. You can park at Mall parking for Macy's and walk under the pass and get free parking. Don't forget to validate at Macy's.
