‪We stopped by one of the access points for the river and spent a couple hours along the river swimming. It is the clearest river in the US so we made sure to bring our goggles. So many fish, crawfish, snails, and other creatures to look at. It was so beautiful!‬

‪We did complete study of the Kelsey Trail from Scott Valley to Crescent City, Using Trimbles Terrain Navigator Pro. mapping program that has Topo, Satellite Imagery, Orthophoto, maps, all can be use in 3D so I zoomed in like using a Drone, I could fine many areas on ridges etc, of evidence of the Old Trail. I have on this route over 900 gps markers and commented in the gps comment field, I have labeled points of interest, I use the best description of the trail by Judge A, Rosbrough papers with Bancroft Library, and with other historical research We did field work on many areas. Have photos of of some of the areas especially Siskiyou County I worked with Bob Roberts packer that has packed on a lot of the trail for the Klamath National Forest Service for fire and trail maintenance and rancher that gaze their cattle in the summer. I have too much information to add. I have a Electronic Book with all topo, satellite Imagery, maps, photos, labels, and maps to enlarge, Brief History of surveying, in this is my work for 27 years mapping Emigrant Trails full time, for the Oregon California Trails Association and government agencies, Universities etc. My report is 20 pages
I hope some that are interested will contact me

‪This is a view only place to hike and have a picnic. Swim if you like to shiver. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. This is also a favorite swimming hole for the younger locals around here when the sun comes out. There are diving rocks and steelhead you can see from the rocks here. ‬

‪The South Fork Smith River country is wild, rugged, and deeply forested country. There are a few lightly populated rural spots, along with a few river access and camp sites. The prominent campsite, Big Flat, has no river access (it does have a chilly creek). If you continue past Big Flat you can bear right and go up the old Gasquet-Orleans (G-O) road to the S. Kelsey Trail head access, and eventually to a dead end up by the Siskiyou wilderness. The S. Fk. Smith is clear, cool, and clean. When we visited in early September 2016 the water was almost too cold to swim in very long. It was full of salmon fry and simply lovely. There is not a lot of visitation. Up in the trees the air was full of small mosquitoes, even though the landscape was very dry. Note that at dusk a pickup truck took a quick tour through the S. Kelsey trailhead and left quickly when they saw us there, suggesting they were perhaps thinking of breaking into vehicles parked there. So, even though it's remote, don't keep valuables locked in your car.‬

‪The South Fork of the Smith River makes its way down through part of the Six Rivers National Forest and joins the Middle Fork of the Smith River in Hiouchi, just north of the entrance to Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. The river is accessible at numerous locations. Dozens of creeks, home to spawning salmon, steelhead and trout, join the river as the waters twist and turn their way downstream through a rock canyon. Gravel and sand bar beaches abound. Big Flat Campground is a favorite for locals and tourists alike. The South Fork is a premier kayaking river with Class III and IV rapids in late winter to late spring. Or just take a leisurely drive upstream into the mountains and see the damage done by last year's wildfires. A HEAD'S UP: The 2nd bridge on South Fork Rd., which crosses over the South Fork of the river after your turn off US Highway 199, is under repair. Monday to Friday from 8 am to 5 pm there may be up to 45 minute delays to cross the bridge. On weekends the construction zone is controlled by a timer and the wait is usually no longer than 5 minutes. Bridge work will continue for many months.‬

‪We hustled down this road to circle back up the Oregon Coast. Great road, heavily patrolled by the CHP revenuers though

We had earlier camped right on the river at Jedediah Smith State Park. Huge trees, good showers, good river access. Loved it‬
