‪Horrible manager. Visited yesterday, Saturday, June 5, 2021. 3 hours to get there only to be treated discriminatingly by a male manager. I'm handicapped in a wheelchair, NOT BY CHOICE! He refused to allow me to sit in a shaded area while awaiting for my party of 6. They were in clear view coming towards us! As they arrived i told them what he did. We ALL left! Visited another tasting place and were treated kindly!
Horrible, rude man. I will inform many of his behavior and rudeness. Evidently he doesn't care about the handicapped!‬

‪Recently visited Solvang with family for a nice day trip. This little danish town is very cute, walkable, with lovely photo scenes, cute eateries, and wonderful wine tasting rooms. We were walking through town when we found an open courtyard with a few wine tasting spots and thought it’d be fun to stop for a wine tasting as an activity.

obviously the kids would have to continue on with souvenir shopping while the adults have a sit down and rest. “marvelous idea,” i thought to myself. The courtyard and town is fairly visible from any one angle, and not very busy, so it’s a safe space for families to be and roam together.

enter toccata wine tasting...

i stopped in and spoke with a woman at the front register named, “Kelly.” I introduced myself and said we’d like to try a wine tasting for fun, what is the deal...?

Kelly explained: “we have grapevines from Italy that were brought here in the 70s, and we’ve been perfecting our wine ever since. you get a 1-ounce pour per tasting, with approximately 6 wines to taste. it roughly comes out to $15 to $20 per person, depending on varietal chosen for the tasting experience.”

“But Kelly, i don’t drink, only for 2 adults.” I mentioned to her. Then Kelly says, “if you buy two bottles i’ll waive the tasting fee.”

Great, i thought to myself. If they’ve got good wine we can get some gifts to boot.

i grabbed my family and we returned to the shop. Kelly tried to sit us in the front of the store but it was far too cold and dark. We sat in the outdoor courtyard where they staged tables made out of barrels with lots of sunshine. I stepped away for a minute to the souvenir shop next door but my family talked with Kelly and she told them: “buy a bottle and i’ll waive the tasting fee.”

Everyone had a look at the menu and made their selection. One order of white, one order of red. Then the fun began.

Kelly returned with two glasses and set them on the barrel. She then announced, “Don’t place your glass on top of the menu on top of the glass or a gust of wind will most certainly knock it over and spill the wine on top of you. It happens all the time.” We had a laugh then she walked away.

Kelly returned with two bottles. if i recall correctly, the wine tasting starts light to dark/heavy. the first round of wine was lovely and then approximately 5 - 10 minutes later Kelly returns for the second tasting.

She walks up and says, “Here’s your second wine, i can either pour it over what is in your glass or you can dump it out in that plant over there.”

We all turn to take a look at this leafless plant and burst out into laughter as this poor plant has been cast off to the side and looks beyond dead with the trunk and branches stained red from all the wine poured over her.

Flummoxed, we did as advised by Kelly, got up from our chair, walked over and poured the excess wine into the planter so we may begin our second tasting.

Immediately, many questions filled our heads:
1. Is Kelly lazy to make us reuse a glass?
2. Does she not want to wash extra glasses?
3. How long has that tree been drinking wine?
4. Will the wines blend and alter the taste....?
5. Is this a COVID precaution...?
6. Is it too much trouble to bring a new glass?
7. Is that tree dead from all the wine...?

We laughed it off and continued our little wine adventure in this strange little village with wine madam Kelly.

Then, someone had to go to the restroom.

Kelly returned for the third tasting when someone asked: “Kelly, where is your restroom?”

Of course, it’d be no simple answer from Kelly.

Kelly goes on to say: “Well, if you turn around and look over there at the red roof shack, that’s your bathroom. Every restaurant has a bathroom for patrons but people sitting out here (referring to the courtyard) all must go on that LONG WALK over to the red roof shack.”

Honestly the shack was about a tenth, maybe a quarter mile away, but no more than a five minute walk. you have to go over a city block, a city parking lot, and a city park to get there.

When we got back we found water bottles at our table, which we thought was for hydration, but we used them to rinse out the glass in-between wines as well.

We decided to purchase a bottle of the rosé when i thought about what Kelly told me, “buy TWO bottles and i’ll waive the tasting fee.”

Kelly returned with a bag with two bottles and the check. When i reviewed it, the tasting fees were still on the check.

“Kelly, i’m confused, what is this tasting fee?”

Literally, straight-faced and without hesitation Kelly replied, “Did you want me to take back the check and add on another bottle of wine? That’ll remove the tasting fee.”

We got out of there immediately. We honestly had a lot of fun but did not appreciate the misrepresentation and bad faith deal purported by this business.

Toccata features “italian” wines; they have a second location directly across from them that is their “french” wines, all from the Lucas & Lewellen Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley.

Buyer Beware! Make sure you understand the terms and conditions. We had a lot of fun but most likely will not return based off of the shenanigans we experienced during our first visit.

Great wines, hilarious service, but you’ll still pay the tasting fee.‬

‪The customer service was on point and the co-owner Louis, of Lucas and Lewellen visiting our tasting and sharing the history of his passion for wine, made it all worth it. We loved the white wines and purchased seven different bottles. This was by far the best wine tasting room we visited because of the customer service. In fact, this was the only vineyard tasting room we purchased from of the six we visited.‬

‪Went there with an app that allowed for 2 for 1 wine tasting and I chose the reds, my wife the whites, and Cindy took me on a wine tasting tour of some fabulous Italian reds. As son as she new I had a preference for the Nebbiolo grape, she went off script from their tasting menu and took me through a tour of related varietals, with different vintages, and I found some spectacular Italian reds. Bought 2 reds and a white and would have bought more but we already had wine from Santa Barbara and can only take 4 across the Canadian border duty free, and duties on CA wine are stiff. If you're in town, get the tour from Cindy....you won't be disappointed.‬

‪By far this was my favorite place to visit on this trip to Solvang. After visiting their sister tasting room we stopped by here due to the half price tasting offer. We also wanted to go because my sister and I prefer Italian wines over French in general. This was a great stop and I will defiantly come back on my next trip! The wines were smooth and had great flavor. The dry wine hit you in the back of the palette and left a great flavor in your mouth. This was the only place we enjoyed enough to buy a bottle!‬

‪Four of us enjoyed the tasting. We were recommended to Toccata by another tasting room as Toccata had a Red and a White selection. Service and information on the wines was enjoyable and we both purchased quite a few selections. ‬

‪Sandy helped us choose a wine tasting that each of us would enjoy and she hit it right on the mark! Everyone enjoyed the wines. Everyone purchased the wines! They have a nice variety so it was easy to find one that we liked. My favorite was the 2016 Gewurztraminer since on a hot afternoon this one was crisp and smelled like a flower garden. Even the red wine drinkers in the group found this one to be delightful!‬

‪After walking off breakfast, cool down with wine before lunch. Wine not? There was three of us and we were able to share one tasting. The person serving us was kind, professionally skilled, and informative. Great recommendations. Overall, well worth it. Pleasant and fun experience.‬
