This is a lovely place for a pleasant wander, but with a couple of drawbacks.....
The signage isn’t brilliant. We tried to follow the white trail, but at one junction there were no signs, so we had to guess. We ended up turning round in the end as we didn’t want to get lost, and couldn’t rely on having enough signs.
There’s a map of the trails by the main car park. Such a shame you can’t access this map on the website as you really need a print off of it with you.
The main drawback, however, is the drive to the main car park. An absolute nightmare. Narrow lanes with hardly any passing places. This goes on for miles. I couldn’t enjoy the walk as I was so worried about driving back.
It would have been good to park at the first entrance you come to, by the bridge at the foot of Dolton. Someone had written that there’s space for 2 or 3 cars. There was a works vehicle there and no space for anything else. We did park at Dolton when we visited a few years ago, but it was a nightmare finding a space there, and then you’ve got the extra walk to and from the village, so it’s not ideal. It would be good if Devon Wildlife could create a decent car park by the bridge. That would save the worst of the lanes. Also the main car park we went to yesterday was a sea of mud. Not great.
It says on the gate of the main car park that the paths are wheelchair friendly, and that the walks are strenuous. Read into that as you will!
To sum up: a delightful woodland, but the signs need to be properly maintained, a map needs to be made available online, and a decent car park needs to be created at the first pedestrian entrance, near the bridge below the village of Dolton. I would love to return, but won’t be doing so....such a shame.

Perfect nature reserve for walking to the Hide along the Torridge river only marred by dog mess on and by the path near the entrance. Every prospect pleases but only man is vile.

Came for a doggy walk and took a long even path along the bottom of the woods although there are other paths going off it, looks like it would be good for family walks with pushchair too although might get a little muddy!

I love Halsdon- walking the dog any time of year. In spring bluebells are wonderful.Riversude walking can be muddy but look out for kingfishers as they can be seen. Several marked walks of various lengths. Lovely.

Every time I visit this area I take my dog for a good long walk and we all love it. Peaceful, relaxing and lovely. It’s what I miss about living in England

We had a lovely day in the Halsdon woods during our summer holliday. It is fairly easy to find parking near one of the entrances to the reserve. Walk along the river Torridge and enjoy this peacefull place on earth.

We really enjoyed our two our walk in this beautiful countryside reserve area that goes in part along the banks of the Torridge, in part through woodland and in part in open fields. It is strenuous uphill walking in places but there are ample flat paths in between. You pass a bird hide looking out over the river and enjoy the possibility of seeing kingfishers and otters. We didn't see these but saw lots of other birds and several varieties of butterfly. We liked the walk because it was so varied allowing us to see many habitats. We hope to return in a different season but it is clearly a most interesting walk at all times of the year. Obviously those not so fit and the very young could do short sections of the walk and still have pleasure.

A delightful walk (about 5.5km) around this special wildlife wooded valley along the river Torridge - if you're lucky you might see otter, kingfisher, sandmartins - we weren't quite that lucky but did see an amazing array of woodland flowers, large red damselfly, heron, grey wagtail and heard many of the warblers now arrived and nesting, a tawny owl with signs and clues to so much more. The walk is fairly easy for the most part along dirt trails but there are a couple of short steep bits but just take your time. It would be really lovely if dog owners kept their pets on a lead or under close control at this time of year as they can disturb ground nesting birds and other visitors - please!

If you are visiting Halsdon nature reserve in Summer or if you do not want to drive on a narrow lane, park in the square at Dolton [outside the Royal Oak] and walk along West Lane down a long gentle hill and turn right at the bottom at Woolridge Cross. Go over the bridge and left through the gate to the reserve. There is space for 2-3 cars outside the gate

In the woodland yes dogs are allowed, but when you reach the bird hide by the river they are not allowed in the meadows along the riverbank.
