We never found the road to the right to turn off for the falls. We were afraid of getting a flat tire. The cow pastures went on and on. We drove back to the junction and was told by a hiker we had not gone far enough. Next time we will have to rent a SUV or 4x4 to attempt that again

I have done this hike many times and each time its a thrill. Its not dangerous but you have to wear good shoes the trip into the falls is great but don't go if its raining or looks like rain the road gets as slick as goose grease. By the way I am 91 haven't done it this year but did it 2 years ago.

We loved it. The countryside is fabulous. Spectacular. The hike was easy but would be challenging if muddy. Short patches where might be dangerous for young children or older adults.

Took a well maintained gravel road to the falls, and on the way we were treated with natures bountiful beauty. Stop along the way to gaze down into the steep Piedra River canyon. The road will take you through some amazingly beautiful vistas and leading you through aspen and pine woodlands to the trail head.
The falls are at the end of a nice half mile walk that lead to a box canyon where the falls rumble down into a tranquil pool. Don't forget your swim close as the pool is to inviting to pass up. Oh, the water is from the high mountain country, so it is a little "cold".

Our first attempt to get the Falls ended up being a fun trip up the mountain. The GPS took us the shortest route, which led us to a closed gate that said no entrance to Piedra Falls and then a dead end which was one hour one way from Pagosa Springs, but it was a beautiful scenic drive.
Our second attempt, we made it up the long winding gravel road up the mountain to the trail. Short, easy hike. Was slippery and steep in some places. Had to be very careful with the little ones. Very pretty views.

Water shoots out from a cleft in the rock. Spectacular even with relatively low water.
Hike is 1/2 mile. All stones and rock. The area at the falls is steep, rocky and hard to climb. Not recommended for anyone who is not very agile. Do not attempt if it has been raining. The rock would be slick as ice.

The drive took us quite awhile. We had to stop at the general store by the sportman's campground to get better directions. Once we arrived, we hiked about 1/2 mile to the waterfall. The terrain wasn't too bad. (There was a slight steep portion that was wet). Many people brought their dogs (big and small).The waterfall was very pretty. Many people were walking through the river with watershoes on and some were swimming. There were lots of flies/bugs around the waterfall and when hiking back to the parking lot.

It’s very cool to see this in person. The best time though is spring to early summer because it runs sooo much fuller because of the mountain snow melt.

The drive to this very short hike is long and in my honest opinion, not worth it UNLESS, you have children who just want to see a waterfall. It’s a super easy hike but the trail isn’t very pretty. Wouldn’t recommend it to friends/family visiting the area. There is another hike I would recommend, Fourmile Falls Trail which is rated Moderate and has 2 waterfalls and some pretty views and meadows along the way.

Bite of a excursion to get there, dirt road was fine. the hike up from the trailhead is easy, and the falls spectacular.

the visitors center could probably answer that, but I wouldn't try it if it's been wet.

From Pagosa Springs turn onto 600/Piedra Rd. headed north. It becomes 631/Piedra Rd. It's pretty far, and windy. Keep on 631 though. There will be signs too that read Piedra Falls. Turn right on 636 for a short bit, turn right again on 637 and that's the main road to the Piedra Falls Trailhead. Road ends and you've arrived.
Is the water deep enough for cliff jumping? We dont care how cold it is

Definitely not, you can hop around on the big bolders and put your feet in the water but it's not the type of falls you can jump into.

Are there other trails that branch off or trailhead(s) close that a multi-night hiker might enjoy?

I agree with the other responses. There is really no other trail at the falls, once you are up to the base, you stroll back to the car. That said, there are numerous other trails in the area and getting a good trail map or at least seek info from the Pagosa National Forest office is highly recommended.

I read that the road is a gravel road. Do you need a four wheel drive?

Yes, the road is gravel. No, I drove up to the parking lot area in my 10 year old Prius. There were only a couple of rough places (close to the parking area) from a wash out. It looks like the County Road Maint. folks do a really great job keeping this road in good condition. All this said, I would avoid this road in a rain storm. There are sections that would get very muddy and slick during and after a rain.
