This was a pleasant surprise for us. We were out driving and happened up on this drive. The road was very doable for most vehicles and the scenery was nice all the way up. Recommended if you are in this area and have the time.

Drove a rental front drive Sienna and was a breeze to top of Owl creek. Saw the meadow, Chimney rock and seemed smaller than on tv. Free / open range cattle grazing. Fictitious hill where Campbell shot Duval. Rock where Darby slept a mile away at sign of 10000 summit.
ABSOLUTELY BEST ASPEN TREES 10/12/20
13 slow miles from Ridgway, washboard not too bad compared to Denali hwy

If you beauty and nature this drive is a must do. It is breathtaking and well worth you time. The roads are a little rough but my crossover did just fine. Would be so much more awesome in a 4 wheel drive

Very accessible and well maintained, Owl Creek Pass does not require four wheel drive. Take slow and bring your canera. Abundant wildlife can be seen like deer, elk, marmots and even bald eagles. The reservoir is often like a mirror and makes for some postcard like photographs.

Owl Crk Pass is a sightseers dream come true, in SEP, OCT. Fall colors and blue skies every day! Its a gravel dirt off hwy county Route 12, climbs to app 13000 ft. 4X4 probably best. Access to
water (streams) live Elk Herd, Pumas and brown/black bears. great flowers (wild of course) in spring, mushrooms for serious mushrm hunters! Mostly aspen and pine trees. Fall for mushrooms.

Was very blessed to be in the Ouray-Telluride area from 9/27 until 10/11.
The leaves were amazing this year on Owl Creek pass from one end to the other. Even got a good snow on the 10th to finish the trip!
I highly recommend this drive, especially in the fall!!!

This is a beautiful drive. It took us several hours and the road was rough in places, but we made it in our Ford edge just fine and it was worth the time. If you go all the way to the reservoir and then continue on, you will come out on highway 50 pretty close to the Blue Mesa reservoir. There was a pretty little lake and stream along the route that was nice as well.

Great views and great color in the fall. The east, middle & west forks of the Cimarron are spectacular. Great drive from Hwy 50 to the road that takes you past Silver Jack Reservoir and through the Cimarron’s and then down Owl Creek Pass to Hwy 550 and Ridgway.

Imagine driving up a mountain on a single wide gravel road, with 500 foot drops and very few guardrails......... that's this place. LOL... Awesome fun and great views for the one not driving...hahaha... As we were going around a corner on a downhill area, we met a truck and camper. I had to back up about a 1/4 mile around a corner with no railing...I think I almost **** my pants... but it was thrilling. A MUST DO when in the area...

The road in unpaved and a bit rough but it is a perfect place for visitors who want an outdoor drive but are not yet up to Imogene Pass. I would suggest 45 wheel drive or a rental car that you don't care too much about. Fantastic views and photo opportunities. Take a small picnic for the top of the pass because there is no place to eat or buy anything in fact. You can leave Ridgway on the Owl Creek Pass Road which will eventually take you to US 50 back into Montrose but it would help if you got an off road map because there are one of two forks in the road and it is somewhat ambiguous or unclear which way to go at the junctions. The whole trip ought to take about 3 hours. This is free range territory so you may have a to drive through some cattle now and then.

Would you say a minivan can drive down this? We can't afford a rental so we're driving our van... wanted to see this area. Thanks

Hi, I think a van would be OK, however, 4wheel drive is best.

Exactly where is this Owl Creek Pass? Is this on the Last Dollar Rd near Ridgeway?

No, the turn off to Owl Creek Pass is north of the Ridgway stoplight along Hwy 550 about two miles. From there, the pass is about 15 miles along good quality dirt road. Brad
