We visited Scawby Hall this afternoon on the first of its 2023 open afternoons.
A lovely visit. Very pretty gardens and an interesting family home to learn about. Our guide Trevor Cherry was very informative and made the tour extremely interesting.
A visit for tea and cake to St Hybalds (next door) is a perfect ending

Interesting afternoon. Beautiful gardens and a house offering so much ancestral and artistic history. The guide was friendly and let us view the house in our time. Full of a wealth of facts and stories of famous visitors. We were sad to leave.

A visit has to be booked in advance and is by guided tour. The hall is a hotch potch of architecture so is fascinating to see how one family adapted and added bits on to suit their circumstances. The guide was extremely interesting and it was just about the right length.
The gardens are glorious but it seemed a shame fruit was falling off the trees and being wasted. Perhaps an arrangement for visitors to pick the fruit next year and make a contribution to charity would be worth thinking about. Tea and cakes were available in the church next door. All in all a lovely afternoon

We visited for a house tour. The guide was both ignorant and patronising, and after 90 mins we had learned nothing about the hall. We then had tea in the church, where one of the women serving teas plonked herself down next to us, unsolicited and too close for comfort in times of covid, and then proceeded to denigrate the owners of the hall before asking us about our experience because she was 'looking for gossip'. The gardens did look worth a visit but heavy rain prevented us exploring them.

Although the day was raining this is a great place to visit, we booked the house and garden tour, on this day there was only my wife and me on the tour which made it feel more like a private tour, it takes 60-90 mins to go round but it took us over 2hours, there is a rich history involved and many Stubbs original paintings.
The hall is only open on certain days, check out the pamphlet and visit if you can..
We didn’t have time to go right round the gardens but they are lovely...

As a child, I used to spend quite a bit of time at Scawby Hall and in the gardens. This is the second time we have been back as part of the Open Days - the first time was in 2009 when they first opened up to the public. This time, we spent last Saturday afternoon strolling around the gardens, looking at the changes and catching up with some family friends. You can also get tea and cake in Scawby Church, just through the gate from the Gardens and across Church Walk.
We had a guide to ourselves when we were ready to take the tour of the Hall interior. There are a few rooms on the tour and many of the contents, including paintings and historical artefacts, were described by the guide. Lots of information for local history enthusiasts. It was great to see some of the contents which I remembered as a child, along with the more publicised Stubbs paintings and sketches.
It was nice to go back again and reminisce.

The house and gardens are only open on certain days in the summer, so it is essential to check dates on the Scawby Hall website. A gardens only ticket is available or a combined house and gardens. When we went along we were the last visitors of the day, so had a personal tour of the hall given by a very friendly and knowledable local lady. The hall is basically a smaller version of the many country houses in that part of the world, but it makes for a more compact tour. As well as the tour guide, all the staff were very friendly and helpful, as were the Hall owners. In season, excess produce from the kitchen garden is sold in the shop near the car park. There are refreshmnets available in the adjacient St. Hybald's chuch on open days and meals are available in the nearby Sutton Arms. Will return sometime for a more detailed look at the gardens.

The Scawby Hall looks like a beautiful place to visit. Unfortunately I went on a Sunday and it was closed. From what I did get to see, the flowers are blooming and they look gorgeous. I was just in the area for a day so I thought I would see if the property was open. I will have to make another trip back 🌺

A lovely visit to Scawby Hall and Gardens with our committee, packed with wonderful local history, beautiful gardens to stroll around, our afternoon ended with tea and cakes served in the church, our guide around the hall was Ann Campion and she told the wonderful tales of the Nelthorpe Family who have lived there since the 1500s.

What a lovely place. Arrived on one of the few open days and very excited. Staff friendly and helpful, but seemed unused to wheelchairs.
No one seemed to have a definite answer as to how to get to the hall from the office.
You have to go through the lovely garden to get to the door of the building, but this consists of very chunky bark ground-cover.
We explained the problem to the staff and asked if we could go around the other side of the building where the ground was flat tarmac, but the answer was no.
They kindly offered to let us try using the bark path - which we tried - but we had to go backwards with the wheelchair to navigate the difficult bark, which was very hard work and uncomfortable for wheelchair occupant and the person pulling it!
When arrived at Hall doors, spoke with staff there to discover there were still lots of steps to get around the ground floor (one of which was very deep) and we'd be unable to go upstairs too.
They let one of us have quick look inside to see if we'd manage with the wheelchair, but realised it just wouldn't be possible.
So trekked backwards with the wheelchair out of the garden and had to leave.
Staff did their best, but was such a shame not to see any of it properly. Just a few tweaks could overcome the situation but it seems no-one has thought properly about it, would happily have paid to get in if we could have....

Good Morning,
Just investigating my family tree and discovered that we are descendants of the Nelthorpe family.I have history back to the 8th Baronet, when the Baronetcy became extinct. Therefore, I am very interested to know who and if Nelthorpe descendents still live at Scawby Hall? Thank you, Diana Wood
