Take the steep ride up the hill to the highest point 25 miles from East Coast between Florida to Maine - right in Connecticut. Walk up the 32 feet 976 ft above sea level to the top of historical Craig Castle in Hubbard Park with spectacular views of the states of Conn Mass & NY.
Worth a day trip.

This intriguing castle perches atop the Hanging Mountains and offers a stunning vista of the entire region (including both Hartford and New Haven), and you can see all the way to the Long Island Sound. The castle dates back to 1900 and was built by the same man who donated land and money for the neighboring park, and is an easy hike/walk from there. This area is suitable for beginners who want more of a stroll than a strenuous hike, but it isn't as good for large vehicles if you just want to drive up to look at the castle.

Great visit. Easy enough ride to the summit. The castle is unique, with an entrance point inside and stairs to the top. The Castle and Park have panoramic 360 degree views. You can see the buildings of Hartford and New Haven as well as a sharp view into New York State. Overall the Castle Craig area is safe, but like with any mountain top park use a little caution.

This is a lovely place to stop for a couple of hours. There is a nice park at the bottom and the road to the castle is fairly easy. However, do not drive a motorhome up to the castle. Even though there is parking at the top, the road gets fairly narrow and there are a lot of overhanging trees.

If you decide to hike up from the trailhead at Hubbard Park, be aware that they have changed the color blaze from blue to orange. If I hadn't stopped other hikers and asked for directions, I would have never found the tower. You begin your hike by following the white blaze trail and cross over a pedestrian bridge and then cross a smaller foot bridge. As you continue, you should be looking on your left for an orange blaze on a big rock that begins the steep climb that will lead you to the tower. The view is amazing from the top and there is a spiral metal staircase inside the tower that you can climb up also. To the right of the flagpole I began to see a blue blaze trail and I thought that was the way back but it is a good thing I decided not to take it. Rather than get lost I opted to walk back via the paved road but be aware this is a 3 mile walk to Hubbard Park but the scenery is nice and at one point you can see the tower from a far distance. I feel the park needs to have signs put up indicating where each trail leads to and the mileage. Other than that, this is a great trip to take with beautiful vistas.

You can get to Castle Craig by driving up, hiking up (through the woods), or walking up the paved path. We chose to hike up. The hike was short, but moderately intense. It has several very steep climbs that are totally doable. It gets rocky at the tail end. The path isn’t very well marked, but it’s hard to get lost. It’s well traveled.
There are two areas to “summit”. On one side you’ve got Castle Craig. It provides a nice safe view. I’d love to go back in the Fall for New England foliage. On the other side (a 4 minute walk from where Castle Craig is) you get a nice view of Castle Craig from across. I prefer this view to get pictures and avoid the crowd.
Pro Tip: if you choose the path that starts closest to the Hubbard Park entrance, you’ll want to look out for the bridge that gets you over the highway. It’s not obvious, but you need to get over this to continue towards Castle Craig. If you continue going straight instead you’ll almost immediately end up near the street and you’ll need to turn back around to get to the bridge that gets you over the highway.
Spend some time in Hubbard Park. It reminds me of a miniature Central Park. It’s really beautiful with a couple of waterfalls, a pond, and a nice view of the trails/forest. I’ll definitely be returning for foliage photography.

Been coming here for years. The drive up the mountain is always cool and plenty of parking up top. Great views and multiple trails. Be careful near the edges!

The view at the top is quite impressive. Long road access makes it easy and parking at the top is adequate except at peak times. Hikers use the same roads so a bit dangerous to walk up but it can be done.

This place has some of the best views in CT. You drive up to the "castle", its a tower. The tower you walk up these metal stairs a few flights, then it opens up to some amazing views. The tower sits along a steep cliff. This is also in Hubbard Park which is a beautiful park. Great place to visit anytime of year. If you are visiting the area and its in the cooler months bring a coat.

We parked by the lake in Meriden park and hiked through the woods, across the freeway, and up the mountain to Castle Craig. You can drive directly to the "castle" if you wish. The hike was nice with young kids and the view from the top of the castle/turret was pretty awesome.

Hi. Planning to go there, does anyone know if I can take a small dog with me? Is that park dog friendly?

Not really sure about the question but it is a very nice place to go and see the fall colors. Be prepared to walk almost 2 miles up as they closed the gate I believe last week of October or 1st week of November. You'll be better off checking the website.
