‪"We had a great experience with Peucang Island Ecoresort! We did the full three day which included a rainforest tour, canoeing, snorkeling, wildlife waching, a hike to see the rain forest, a visit to a simple lodge and a great meal, Ade and Eric were amazing tour guides!!! They were so knowledgeable and friendly. We got more out of this day than we expected. I highly recommend to stay with Peucaang Island Ecoresort!"‬

‪Ujung Kulon National Park is a massive nearly innaccessible national park covering the Southwest corner of Java and it blows other national parks in Java out of the water in terms of it's biodiversity and life. The work done by the rangers to protect the endangered Javan Rhino has also done a great job protecting the rest of the life in the park. It's very difficult to see the Rhinos (the jungle is... well the jungle, super dense) and we did not see them. However if you are interested in seeing jungle plants, hearing and seeing scores of birds from the beautiful Blue Throated Bee Eater (there are TONS of them around the savanna areas) to the Rhinocerous Hornbill if you are lucky (we were) you will have a great time!. The hike along Ciremea Beach to Tanjung Layang is spectacular and takes you through a variety of different ecosystems in the park. The Batik Villas on the powdery soft white sand beach of Peucang Island make a fantastic and comfortable base for exploring this, the best of Java's national parks. It's not cheap, but the experience is once in a lifetime and it is truly pristine and untouched by the crowds of otherwise overpopulated Java island. It's about a 10 hour trip by car and boat from Jakarta to get there but for those who value exploring pristine nature it is well worth the trip! Be prepared for an adventure and you will have a trip of a lifetime!‬

‪I have just been back for the second time from Ujung Kulon National park a few days ago. The site is still stunning as ever, pure, natural. However, based on recent experience touring and staying at the park, I kind of get the impression that the people in charged of serving visitors (locals and foreigners) considers "minimum service" as equal to "eco tour", "natural wonder", etc. I feel like: "Why should you seek for customer's satisfaction? We have been here to take care of our Indonesia's heritage. We, are the heroes. We, are the ones you should be thankful for. If it weren't for us, you wouldn't have this chance of exotic beauty. So, yes, do pay us. Lots of." is what is in their mind.

The service we received, the lodge we stayed in, in my personal opinion, is of undervalue compared to the amount we were required for. I talked to our guide, but did not click. Hence, my impression written above -- from personal experience.‬

‪We live in Jakarta and took advantage of a long weekend to visit Ujung Kulon National Park. We drove 3 hours to Carita and then chartered a boat for Sat/Sun/Mon. The boat was great, clean and about 12 meters w/ dual 40 HP yamaha engines that ran safely and the crew of 3 ran it perfectly throughout the weekend. (Boat could probably fit another 3 or 4 people but it would be tight.) I mention all of this, because the bulk of the cost of the weekend (18 Million IDR – or about $1,200) is the boat, gas and crew. That kind of money usually goes an awfully long way here in Indonesia, but the boat alone cost about 4 or 5M IDR a day (about $300-$350/day.)

It's a 3-hour boat trip to get into the park from Carita; luckily it wasn't very windy or rough, but the surf does pick up when you get into the straits. The first night we stayed on Palau Handeuleum in an old building that was the former ranger station - accommodation was rather basic, but clean and electricity was only provided for a few hours in the evening. It was cool and bug-free (we were there at the very end of the dry season - I didn't see a mosquito the entire weekend!)

We did wake up to a rat that had drowned in our bak mandi (water basin for washing.)

During the day we swam and explored the islands and did an afternoon canoe trip up the river looking for birds and wildlife – we saw some but really not very much at all. Not sure if its because it is the end of the dry season or?? And everything we saw, ran or flew away immediately, as if it was being hunted for dinner. Our guides were great in navigating the river and getting us around, but no so knowledgeable when asked pretty much anything. (Perhaps I am spoiled, but this is no African safari with a running dialogue of information on the local flora/fauna.) My wife and I did another canoe trip the next morning at sunrise, without kids and went even further upstream… we saw nothing. Maybe this was because its the very end of the dry season?

In our travels to the next island, we stopped and went swimming, snorkeling and exploring along a beautiful beach that we have all to ourselves. It was beautiful and special – without another soul (or boat) in sight!

The second night we stayed at the Fauna lodge on Palau Peucang - again very basic (mattress on the floor) but clean and electricity for a few hours at night. No mosquito nets. This island has other lodging options: Flora Lodge looks beautiful w/ proper beds and a/c etc; however it was being renovated and none of the 4 units was available (why you would renovate all at the same time with a crew of 1 to work on them? Ohh, typical Indonesia…) This island also had upgraded villas to rent – for an additional $100/night that were right on the beach and looked nice – but I would have needed to rent two to fit my family of four, and the wind was whistling through them, so we remained in the Fauna lodge and it was fine, very basic, but just fine.

We did a hike to the other side of the island, which was pretty and we saw peacocks, pigs, some birds and deer along the way (way in the distance, through thick brush and all of the animals again ran as if their lives depended upon it) … it was nice, but not exotic.

In conclusion, for as far out of the way and remote (and expensive!) this trip to the national park was, I just expected more... more animals, more commentary on what we seeing and better accommodations (for the price.)

I'm still torn on should I recommend this trip to others and whether I should return and do it again, perhaps w/ a different guide and wetter time of year... I don't know, there's so many other places to visit instead.

Best of luck to you!‬
