It’s an okay place to go and pass some time. We went to fill time before our manatee boat trip. The history is neat and the park is pretty. STAY ON THE PATH!!

I stopped by Crystal River Archeological SP to see the Indian mounds. The museum has many artifacts from the mounds on display as well as a video describing the site. The mounds are distinct and impressive. The mound by Crystal River is particularly impressive with great views from the top. I learned quite a bit about the Native American peoples who lived here 1 - 2 thousand years ago that I did not previously know. It took about 45 min to see everything which made for a nice place to stretch my legs on my way to Orlando. Definitely a great visit!

The site is very pleasant and worth the $3 per vehicle entry fee. The museum (closed 2 days/week) had a lot of displays but was missing several including a prehistoric canoe. A rude/arrogant volunteer at the visitor center was very condescending. The walkways are extremely uneven and they sprayed all the chipped and broken sidewalk with orange spray paint perhaps 20 years ago. Don't bring anyone with balance issues or a walker. However, the grounds themselves are quite nice if you don't trip on the sidewalk. The magnificent main mound has a set of stairs you can climb to see the commanding view. The waterfront area is peaceful. There is a short narration video inside the museum. Learned a lot about the area's history and would take others here. No see um insects were aggressive and numerous. bring bug spray. Very uncrowded.

Quite a lovely spot in the park and a well thought out presentation regarding our pre columbian forebearers.

If you have an interest in the past, this state park is very interesting. There is a 9 minute movie that describes the archaeological findings within the park in addtion to displays of artifacts found at this site. There is a well marked trail around the park that leads you to the sites described in the movie. We spent approximately one hour but it could take longer if you decided to sit and take in the beautiful scenery along the bay.

Very friendly place and beautiful . our tour guide was a volunteer who loved history, kept to the facts, and enjoyed his job. I am not a history nut but found this place to be very interesting.

This place is a hidden gem, I have lived here for 22+ years and have never heard of it. Right off the main road in Crystal River is the site of pre-Native American burial grounds and "Middens" (piles of their shells and trash). The welcome center has a museum of artifacts that have been recovered from the site and a self guided tour around the mounds. It is a beautiful and fascinating place to contemplate what happened here thousands of years ago and why these peoples built these mounds.

When we arrived here we were looking for the 2 mile loop trail. We encountered some Rangers at the entrance who advised that there was a 7 mile loop trail and gave us directions to it.
When at first went to the 7 mile loop trail it started off pleasant enough. However there was an over abundance of flying insects that were attacking every available part of our skin including our scalp! After a short bit we turned around because we couldn’t take it anymore and we are Floridians!
We got back in the car and went down a different road and encountered the 1.7 mile loop trail that we were looking for. I’m not sure why the park ranger gave us incorrect directions. However once we located this trail it was very pleasant. The breeze was blowing here and keeping the insects at bay. We even saw manatees hanging out in the water. A pleasant morning stroll.

Signed up for the “moon over the mounds” 30 minute tour early evening guided tour online.
The no-see-um’s were so bad that some of the group didn’t make it past the first stop of the tour.
Everyone was slapping and scratching every few seconds - regardless of the different kinds of bug spray they had at the check in table that we were encouraged to use.
The guide explained that they were “really bad” that evening and that when there is a breeze it’s usually not sooo bad.
Eventually I left the tour to head back to the car with some others as you couldn’t keep up with the bugs bitting your face, neck and even under your covid mask - it was a really bad experience.
If we had any idea or even some sort of warning on the website I would have given this place a higher rating. Not letting us know removed our ability to opt out in advance and save all the bite ointment that we stopped to buy on our way back to our accommodations as the bites only itch more over the following days.
As we sat in the car we watched visitor after visitor slapping their legs, arms, necks and faces Maybe it’s better another time of the year but we won’t be back.
