Our first time on a tiny houseboat and what an amazing experience it was! We couldn't have asked for better weather which made all of the animal life active, and the houseboat was the perfect vessel for disappearing into the natural setting. Even though we did have 1 MAJOR rain storm that added excitement to the trip it was definitely worth every moment. Our highlight was a close up one on one visit by a Manatee. Couldn't recommend this adventure enough!!!!

We knew, going in, that being on the water in Florida in June would be hot. However, Rick made things so much easier for us in every phase of getting our adventure underway. Everything went amazingly smooth and, in fact, this will be something we’ll do again!

Our family had a fantastic time and quite the adventure. It was great to get out on the water and cruise through the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge. Staying out on the water overnight and being fully immersed in nature was an experience that we will always remember. I would highly recommend an experience like this. Tiny Houseboat Adventures was great and we will book again in the future.

I hate to write anything bad about this company, but this is what happened It is a wonderful experience!
I would never say don't go on it! Just know a few things. We immediately liked Rick and thought he did a great job briefing us about how to navigate, and we so appreciated his constant communication about the weather while we were out. I have to tell you though, that our holding tank was definitely not cleaned out before we took out the boat, unless it holds less than 2 gallons. It was overflowing after a few conservative flushes, the small pot of spaghetti cooking water and a small bowl for personal washing up went down! I don't see how this is possible unless it just wasn't emptied.
It rained pretty hard one night, and I slept on a wet mattress and blankets even though I scurried to set up 2 pots under the drips, and towels along the walls. Still, no worries, It was such a fun trip even though they are old boats and the green one definitely leaks in the rain. No the boat really wasn't that clean when we got it, it was tidy, swept up and wiped down. He relies on each person to clean the boat for the next when they are finished, and I agree with that, but still think they need to be cleaned between customers. I'm sure now that they don't do that. Well, anyway the little stove has two burners and is about 1 foot x 2 foot. Apparently, we missed a spot on the stove when we cleaned. Rick declined to let us go back on the boat and address the stove while he inspected our friend's boat, (a process that takes about 10 minutes) He said it was too late, we already turned it in dirty and he would be charging the $50 cleaning fee. I found that ridiculous and insulting since we are just going to be standing there for 10 minutes. Honestly, we always try to leave things better than we found them, not worse, and we take pride in that! I felt insulted and punished and taken advantage of. A sad end to an otherwise really beautiful trip, and I'm so disappointed in Rick for acting that way, I didn't see it coming. He seemed so nice.

Twyla, we are glad to hear you enjoyed yourselves on your adventure despite your bad review. It’s a shame that things did not end on a good note. Now, your criticism of us and making the assumption that we “rely” on others to clean for the next family or that we “do not clean in between rentals” is insulting. We ask all guests to please take a moment to gather all their belongings and tidy up when checking out.
After going through both boats when you all were done unloading, we simply said there would be a $50 cleaning fee for one of the boats. That was when your partner became upset and apparently your experience turned sour. So much so, that both you and Loren decided to each take the time to write these bad reviews.
In all fairness, the two-burner stove and countertop around the stove had cheese, oil, and other food residue throughout. Not just a spot. A spot, we wouldn’t have said anything about, but is was more than a little spot. We were left with a mess. I understand that you wanted to clean it up after we addressed it, but it was more than just the mess on the stove and counter. The cushions had to be shampooed because there were stains (which required a Bissell shampooing) and the black water tank was overflowing into the toilet bowl.
Spaghetti water and other things you pour into the sink does not go into the blackwater tank. The blackwater tank is for the toilet specifically, so unless you opened the toilet and flushed spaghetti water into the toilet (VERY strange) then that wouldn’t have an effect on the blackwater tank level.
We pump out the blackwater tank and fill the fresh water tank before each rental. We also spend a considered amount of time wiping all surfaces to include the steering wheel, throttle, kitchen counter, sink, bathroom and stove top after each rental. Furthermore, we ask each guest to take pictures of the condition of the boats prior to loading up their belongings and departing on their adventure.
If in that process, we provided you with a boat that had left over food and residue on the stove-top and counter, an over flowing black water tank, and stains on the cushions you would have likely requested a refund. So, it is insulting when we try very hard to provide a fun and enjoyable experience and our boats are not returned in the condition we provide them.
We are unable to upload pictures in this review response, but we would have to help provide some context for others. Lastly, the $50 cleaning fee we attempted to charge was declined we were not compensated for having to clean those things. So, it was a win-win for you, cheers.

First the Pros:
Location, location, location. Deland is located in a gorgeous stretch of the middle St. Johns. The west bank of the river is bordered for miles by Crows Bluff Wildlife Preserve. Wonderfully undeveloped. Also, there are two fantastic state parks within easy boating distance.
The boats themselves are cute as a storybook. Spartan, with minimal amenities and no A/C, refrigerator or stereo. As advertised. And mechanically reliable 100% of the time. Much appreciated.
A word of caution:
I’m a little over 5’10” tall, and 175 lbs. My wife is 5’4”, and weighs 60 lbs. less. The forward bunk was barely big enough for me, my wife just fit in the aft bunk. The foam cushions were more comfortable than sleeping on the ground would be, but not by much. If your party consists of larger people, these boats might not be a good fit.
Now the Cons:
The registration process was drawn out over several days. Our friends, who applied the same day, finally got their invoice and confirmation a couple days after that. Made planning difficult, and should be simplified greatly.
The owner was about 15 minutes late, for both the 10 am arrival, and the 10 am scheduled return time. We were all on time, confirming in advance the time of our arrival.
I should mention that each of the boats had unaddressed maintenance issues. As one example, mine lacked screens in the forward windows over my bunk, which would have made sleeping more comfortable.
The boats were docked in a separate location, and we had to wait while he went and got them, an additional delay.
After a lengthy briefing, we loaded our gear onto the boats, then had to wait again while Rick (the owner) ran out to buy gas to top off the tanks. He did not come prepared. All this delayed our departure, and by the time he was finished, it was lunchtime.
Rick tracks the boats while underway via GPS, sending remote instructions without being present on the boats, apparently not trusting us as captains, in spite of the fact that all four of us have at least 50+ years boating these waters. We’re Floridans, very familiar with boating and Florida weather. Could have done without the intrusions.
We weathered two storms, spent two nights on the water, enjoyed ourselves immensely, and returned both boats fully refueled and on time. We even had them unloaded, and our gear in our cars, by the time Rick showed up.
After he thoroughly inspected both boats, while we stood waiting on the dock, he turned to our friends first, visibly upset. They had cleaned and straightened the entire boat, but overlooked wiping down the camp stove. He immediately said that he was not a cleaning service, and was charging them a $50 cleaning penalty. They offered to clean it themselves; it was a simple oversight. But he was adamant, waiving the contracts at them, insisting that they returned the boat dirty, and would not allow them back on the boat to correct the problem, which seemed entirely reasonable. Rick was far more concerned about being right, than being polite. He yelled at them while we looked on; extremely uncomfortable. After we said an embarrassed goodbye to our friends, who had come on our recommendation, we turned to await our summary judgment.
At first he was still visibly upset, practically shouting, still waving the contracts and justifying his position (and lack of courtesy).
I had to pat the air several times, urging him to control his temper, and remind him that we only wished to discuss our boat, and our responsibility. As the only adult in this confrontation, I managed to take control of the situation, refusing to discuss anything until he settled down. My wife and I remained polite, and conciliatory, which obviously worked in our favor. Surprisingly, he found no fault with our boat, to our great relief, and we were not penalized.
I should mention that each of us are grandparents, with children older than Rick. Kinda humiliating and very uncomfortable. Quite the ugly finish to a beautiful weekend.
One of the inviolable rules of hospitality and tourism is to always treat your guests with respect. Rick would do well to learn this.

First of all, we are glad to hear you enjoyed yourselves on your adventure despite writing a lengthy bad review. A considerable amount of time and effort was put into your review despite the unjust bias and inaccuracies.
First off, we have plenty of guests of all shapes and sizes (some who are larger than others) who share a difference of opinion in terms of the comfort of our boats. Much of it depends on your own personal comfort level. We offer an adventure experience which is most similar to camping on the water. So clearly, if you were expecting the Ritz or Hilton your expectation may have played a role in your personal opinion. However, you can easily see dozens of reviews and pictures of our guests who are larger and sleep very well on our boats.
Yes, we do utilize GPS for many reasons. Most importantly, to ensure our guests safety and help protect our manatee and wildlife refuges. Although you have 50 years of experience, we do prioritize safety and our wildlife above all else.
As for our registration process, we ask simple questions in advance prior to each reservation. Your friends in the other boat (Twyla) who also wrote a bad review had a very difficult time providing very simply information such as a phone number. We do not send out invoices until that simple information is provided.
As for maintenance, yes our boats do certainly require maintenance as does any boat. We do our very best to keep up with repairs as maintenance which is a challenge for us. Which brings us to why you and Twyla wrote bad reviews. At check out, we went over both boats after you indicated you were done unloading and cleaning up. A reviewing both boats we did say there was going to be a $50 cleaning fee because one boat had overflowing toilet, left over food on the counter and stovetop, and cushions that were stained and damaged. That was when your friend on the other boat began raising his voice and yelling that the boat was “filthy” and “$50 dollars is absurd”. There was no waiving of contracts but certainly there was frustration as any person having to deal with such a mess while being insulted would be.
As indicated in our rental agreement and the “Welcome Aboard” letter we ask all guests to please take a moment to clean up for the next family and guests. In all fairness, we ask all of our guests to please take pictures of the current condition of each boat prior to departing on their adventure. I assure you, that if we were to have provided you and your friends with boats with overflowing toilets, food left over on the counter and stovetop, and cushions with stains requiring a Bissell shampooing you would have requested a refund.
What more shameful is that our $50 cleaning fee was declined and we were not compensated for cleaning the over flowing toilet, left over food on the counter and stove, and for shampooing the cushions. Thank you for the lengthy inaccurate review and for being the “adult”.

A friend and I did a two night stay with Tiny Hose Boat Adventures and the experience was wonderful.
I booked online and received thorough communication from start to finish. There was initially a miscommunication regarding check out dates and that was handled honest and fairly which I really appreciated.
On the day of arrival I was very nervous because I had never operated a boat but Rick gave a thorough explanation of everything and was so at ease that I felt confident with the little boat. He took his time practicing with me and my friend.
We took the boat to the mouth of Blue Springs and spent the day watching the manatees and relaxing. We spent the night around one of the tributaries and listened to music and had a delicious dinner we made in the little kitchen. In the morning we woke to birds and manatee breath. 💞
Throughout the time we were out in the boat Rick was great about offering suggestions to keep us and the boat safe. It was clear that he spends time scouting the river for potential issues that an inexperienced boater might not even think about.
All in all it was a memorable and special experience and I want to do it again! High recommend!

My husband and I have sailed in several places and this journey was the most pleasant and relaxing of all. An 18 foot boat was surprisingly spacious as we meandered along the river and in the lakes at a leisurely speed, admiring alligators, turtles, manatees, and the variety of birds. The best part was anchoring out at night. Being surrounded by state forests meant NO noise and NO light contamination. Just us and the stars, a unique experience.

This was a fun weekend for our family of three. There isn't much that can go wrong, the navigation, putt putting around, anchoring, etc. is pretty easy all around. Great access to two springs, some very pretty areas to see, tons of birds, including the loudest bird in Florida, some manatees, alligators, it was all there.
You do have to watch your fuel, water and waste tank space, especially with more than 2 people - 2 is ideal, 3 or 4 is a stretch without good planning over multiple days.
Couldn't catch a fish, had some unsettling interactions with bass fishermen in a big rush in no wake/manatee zones, and the fuel/water/tank drama, but it was still 100% worth it. I'd be cautious in mosquito season though. I can imagine it getting quite buggy.

My wife and I rented a tiny houseboat from Rick at Tiny House Adventures from Feb 21st thru 24th.
The reservation process worked smoothly as well as the pre-trip briefing.
Pay attention and if you need, don't be afraid to take a couple of notes.
The return process was just as smooth without any issues.
3 things to remember.
1. Slow down. First thing to remember (if not from the area) is this isn't your river back home. These houseboats are distinctive and folks on the river will call Rick in a heartbeat if you are going too fast in the no wake zones. Not to mention the area is home to the Manatee.
2. Set reasonable expectations. I do not mean this as an insult, but these are basically camper vans that float. They are not glitzy or glamorous, but they are quaint and fully functional. If you are used to basic camping, then you'll be fine.
3. Slow down. Do this for yourself. You'll miss so much by going over 5 mph. I know it sounds slow and in some areas it is. But you'll see so much more wildlife. We were able to see Manatee on several occasions as well as a Manatee calf and cow by just taking our time. Not to mention all the birds and gators.
First day we left the marina around 11 and went South to Blue Springs. We ate lunch and dinner on the boat and slept in a little branch of the river that went behind a small island.
2nd day we went north up to Woodruff Lake. We stopped by the Marina on the way and had lunch. We had supper on the boat and spent the night on the lake. The sunset and skies were spectacular.
3rd day we headed through lake Woodruff and then through lake Dexter and back south on the St. John river. Had a late lunch at another marina and spent the night about a mile from the turn-in point for the next morning.
Some of the most enjoyable times were mornings on the bow as well as evenings on the bow. Bring bug spray for the evenings (use it outside of the cabin). There is rolled up foam under the back bench on the yellow boat. Use it on the bed. Bring a good cooler and plan on simple cooking (2 burner propane stove). Bring drinking water and cables to recharge your devices. The boat we had had a 2 port 12v to USB adapter. Bring sheets, pillows, blankets, binoculars, hats, a 2nd deck chair (our boat had 1 so we brought our own onboard) and sunscreen.
To us, 2 nights wouldn't have been enough to really begin to experience the St. John River. While a larger houseboat would have had more creature comforts, we found that these houseboats fit our camping lifestyle and are much easier to maneuver in the narrower channels. Rick is easy to work with and truly only wants your experience to amazing.

Our family spent 2 wonderful days on the St John's river looking for manatees. Tiny Houseboat Adventures was wonderful. They made us feel welcome, safe and they were very knowledgable and helpful throughout the trip. They contacted us during the trip multiple times to make sure we were checking major components on the boat and also giving suggestions on where to anchor at night. We had a glorious time and would recommend them to anyone who wantsa truly unique experience that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Can you swim off the boats anywhere in the St Johns River?
Thank you so much!
