If you go to Oman it is because you appreciate the scenery. Here you will not be disappointed. Keep time to enjoy it take a walk. You will be in the environment. We were warned it might be cold, it's very relative. big sun, and in polo.

My husband and I are both fit and in our mid 60s and we loved the balcony hike ….. we went all the way to the end which is a nice little lake part way in a cave area . We had a picnic lunch there …..it is past the village where you scramble over rocks and walk to your left side a ways We hired a guide from zahara tours and it made the hike much more interesting as we learned the culture, history, flora and fauna of the area as well as info about the village which was abandoned just 30 years ago.
Yes there are drop offs as you are hiking but honestly it is a fairly wide trail and we never felt unsafe. I do agree though you need to be fit to finish it and it is for the over 14, 15 or 16 year old group ….. well worth it we took 2 hours each direction ……with a 30’minite stop at the pool. . It was one of the highlights of our 10 day trip to Oman truly the friendliest and most peaceful nation on earth ! ( : The country places a high value on their reputation in the world and taking good are of those who come to explore its stunning landscapes, architecture, forts, villages, long turquoise coastline and exquisite mosques…as well as swim in its gorgeous wadis Wadi sham being the best and a must see/must do! ..I have traveled In 126 countries and Oman is up there as one of my favorites! !

I was told it was the second largest canyon in the world. I haven't checked this, but either way, this mountain backdrop is an indescribable wonder of nature that you just have to see. The drive there is adventurous.

The town of Muscat is very spread out, traversed by 3/4 lane motorways, the only interesting part is Mutrah, around the souk, it's hot & humid.
Outside Muscat, the best places were Djebel Sham, a very deep cayon, walking to a wadi :Wadi Shad, the green mountain & the views around there, small towns: Birkat, El Hamra.
We found the adverts about tours no use, they wouldnt reply by phone or email. One of them did ( GYGuide) & took us by minibus for 12 people to WADI S & the sinkhole, it was very expensive, a tourist trap. It started late, walking in the sun at 11.30 was not good.
The best thing is to hire a car & when it's not possible to finish the itinerary if it's not a 4x4, hire a driver from the Heritage Hotel or any hotel & negogiate the cost.
That way is much cheaper, the drivers know the places, chats to you, tells you about the history.

Be warned, it is a long drive to teach the lookout point. And while the view is spectacular, there was a brief thought on was the drive worth it.
Some signage would be nice to give you some facts and figures, but all there is at the lookout is a lay-by and some people trying to sell the usual tourist stuff.

Green Mountain, the highest peak in Oman and the Grand Canyon : spectacular sites and the canyon must rank as one of the most sensational in the world. I only walked the top edge ; there is only a small section with railing, the rest you can walk as closely as you dare to the edge - loooong way down !

Calling outdoor enthusiasts! Wadi Ghul is a great place to go hiking. We greatly enjoyed the Balcony Walk--with our toddler in a backpack carrier. Rocky/sandy terrain, but easy enough with decent shoes on, and not much elevation change.
There are no facilities (aside from a guy at the beginning selling beverages), so bring all you need: food, water, and sun protection.
Highly recommend checking out Wadi Ghul if you're at all into hiking and the outdoors.

Amazing drive through the canyon by 4x4, something I've never done before in any part of the world. I don't drive but found Ali, an excellent young English-speaking guide, online. He picked me up in Bahla (I got the bus to there from Muscat) and took me to Misfat al Abreyeen, Jebel Shams, Al Hamra and Wadi Ghul. Highly recommended. His number if you need a guide is +968 9015 0577

Stunning balcony walk , don't miss it. Walk all the way to the abandoned village to get the best experience. Not for those scared of heights
