I have experienced a number of dive companies but since I discovered Bonsai I will not dive with anyone else in the Keys. The dive master will only take a limited number of people and he is very safety conscious.

Made reservations for June trip in January. Bonsai closed in February and did not call to tell me. Good thing I called to confirm. Not very professional.

My girlfriend and I have not dove in a while and the owner Peter made us feel very comfortable even with rough seas. We were the only two on the boat and felt like we had a private charter! We were the first to arrive to the Vandenburg and had a great dive! We then went to a reef for the second dive and everything went perfect! Would highly reccomend Bonsai Charter!

My wife had my dives set up for me before I met her in Key West. She told me the research she had done and how nice Peter was to her. I was sure glad she chose Bonsai. We had finished our dive on the Vandenberg (30 minute bottom time) before any other divers had even entered the water. Seems Peter knows what time to leave dock if you want the Vandenberg to yourselves. A very confident, professional, reassuring yet relaxed father/son operation. Thank you peter & Vincent for a great dive.

Thanskgiving dive to the Vandenburg and a reef. Overall this was an excellent dive service, with plenty of personalized attention and guidance. My partner and I are beginner divers (less than 25 dives), and Peter was extremely helpful throughout. When my mask was leaking water, he let me use one of his. When my partner got cold, he let her borrow a jacket. He took pictures for us on the Vandenburg, and provided plenty of technical instruction. Guiding the Vandenburg dive was especially useful, as it can be pretty intense in strong current. The second dive was a shallow reef, with over an hour of bottom time. I would recommend Bonsai to any divers in Key West.

My husband and I found this smaller dive outfit online reading reviews. i personally like the smaller shops better, its more personalized and flexible and you get more attention. This father son team was great. I will definitely use these guys again when I go back. Thank you Pete for being so professional and understanding when you had to fetch my weight belt at 145ft EEKKK! Sorry!

Took whole family of 7,with various levels of diving skills, on dive in January. Explained to Peter that we didn't want to just be thrown in the water, but wanted more attention because 2 of our kids were brand new divers and the other 3 were a tiny bit rusty. He took the time to help us feel safe and comfortable and sent a dive master with us at no extra charge- even took some cool photos on the Vandenberg and emailed them to us at no extra charge. Peter"s son, Vincent did a great job as dive master and even gave the kids a quick lobstering lesson which they practiced on our second dive.

My fiance and I travelled from Canada to Key West a few days before Christmas. I had conversed with Peter a few times via email before arriving. He always was prompt and informative in his responses.
When we arrived on Friday night the forecast for Saturday was not favourable. Peter was very knowledgeable and honestly suggested that we push our dives to the right by one day. This demonstrated great customer service and genuine concern towards getting us the best experience possible.
We ended up diving on Sunday and Monday. It was just the two of us (plus Peter) both days! We basically had a private guide without the high prices that other companies charge. Also, he was very flexible and understanding when we accidentally showed up late the first day!
We appreciated the full service he provided by getting all of our gear ready. Also, he let us store our equipment overnight so we didn't have to haul it back to the hotel.
The diving was pretty good. Good visibility and long bottom time. The best part is that we finished our dive at the Vandenberg before any other boats showed up!!!
The only downfall of our experience was that my fiance's regulator tubes broke on our final reef dive. This problem with the equipment was obviously not Peters fault, it was just bad luck, however, it greatly reduced our final dive time.
Peter helped us improve as novice divers. He is very relaxed and experienced and we would dive with him again.

I went on a dive with Peter of Bonsai Diving Tuesday November 13th. I had researched potential ways to dive the Vandenberg while on a Carnival cruise stop in Key West, and chose this vendor based on the number of positive reviews here on Trip Advisor. First the positives, Peter was very flexible in dealing with changes to my schedule based upon ship arrival times. He was also very personable and seemed to be a knowledgeable diver. I also appreciated that our group of divers was 5....not the cattle all of some dive operations. I felt his boat was a bit small though, especially for a 10 mile ride in fairly rough seas to the dive site. Additionally, Peter did not have any additional crew members on board to help prepare the dive equipment, so we had to wait in a bobbing small boat as he prepared each tank individually. He dove the wreck with us, which was good, however because there were no other team members, the boat was left tied to the mooring. Nothing went wrong, but that seems to me to be a huge gamble. If the boat had broken loose we would have been lost 10 miles out.
There was a very strong current that really served to reduce what we could do on the wreck. I'm used to diving in Cozemel with a current, but that is drift diving. In this case, we had to haul ourselves down the mooring line fighting current the whole way. We then dove some, but ended up fighting current again to get back to the moorline line.....using a tremendous amount of air. For someone used to diving in the high visibility areas of the Caribbean, the 30-50 foot visibility was a big surprise. Certainly not Peter's fault but still a consideration for someone considering this dive. I think maximum time on this dive was 27 minutes. Coming up was another debaucle. Peter got into the boat first, but then tried to get each of us into the boat one at a time, again because of no other team members available to help. The seas were very rough and my wife had a hard time getting into the boat with the weight of her equipment and Peter not helping much. I had to wait and continue to use air before being able to get in the boat, and was under 500 psi when I finally got in.
Next we went to a more sheltered area for our second dive. Peter stayed in the boat for this dive, but gave us the layout of the area and said "go to it". This was fine, but I think the max depth I found here was 20 feet, with most of it between 10-15 feet. I dont think I've ever been on a dive this shallow. My experience has been second dives in the range of 50 feet. Perhaps Key West is just a different dive profile, but now that I've seen it, I think I will stick to Cozemel, Roatan, and the Caribbean.
While this dive turned out ok, it I think, had the greatest opportunity to have turned into something very different due to current, visibility, and lack of support on the boat. Probably the worst dive I've been on....

Divers were accurately briefed on conditions prior to departure. Dive boat is a relatively new 26 ft World Cat rated for 8 divers with 5 on board. Sea state was a 2-3 ft chop with a mild current on the Vandenberg. Two failsafe lines were used to secure the boat to the wreck for the 27 min dive. A free instructor guided tour with free photos was provided. Diver egress was assisted by steading the ladder, removing fins and BC, then assisting up the ladder. Visibility of 30-50 ft is average for this wreck and the bottom time of 27 min at 90 ft exceeded tables. It was a safe multi-level computer dive though. Unfortunately, these divers expected Cozumel or Roatan diving conditions which seldom happen here. We worked hard to give them the safest, most enjoyable trip for their experience level.
