It was looking like a great sunny Sunday afternoon, so decided to take my Mom out for a picnic and tour of the park. I've been to Perry many times over the years but failed to stop and tour the mid 1800s Cracker Cottage and lumber museum. We arrived to find ample parking and a friendly and informative staff. The park is well maintained and very clean. The museum is a must as it's content is well displayed and informative. We walked away with a better understanding of forest habitats and the nuances of forestry, pine management, and the history of harvesting the large first and third generation forests of the region. What a delicate balance we have now. The dioramas are a bit dated but they add to the charm of the museum. The gift shop was not open. Regarding the Cracker House, it was fantastic. Artistically restored and presented thoughtfully with period antiques. The details and craftsmanship kept me combing the structure like an ant on an ant hill. The "swept" yard was equally interesting. All ancillary structures visited around the homestead were well assembled and interpreted. After the tour we rocked in very comfortable rocking chairs on the front porch until it was time for lunch. We used one of the dining pavilions, which were well maintained. Restrooms are located here and at the museum. If you are into North Florida history, regional vernacular architecture, or just need a quiet, beautifully landscape space to relax, visit the Forest Capital Museum State Park.

It was open 8/1/20, and worth the trip. During CoVid, call to check times it’s open. Masks were required inside.The $2 each was a small price to pay for a big adventure. Joe, who was masked, took our admission fees. He was friendly and shared a lot of information with us. We also took a map of the museum and a map for the Cracker House, which Joe told us was built in 1860s - original house except for roof.
We only had 30 minutes to look around the museum and house. In the museum, we read as many of the informative displays as we could. We enjoyed the exhibits with stuffed animals and signs identifying them. Outside, we toured all of the house’s rooms and buildings. Beautiful and well created!
This is a perfect place to take the family, to learn about FL history, and be proud of our roots.

The homestead was fun to walk through. It is small, but interesting and informative about the period. It doesn’t take long to wlak through, but worth the stop if you in the area.

Drove past & turned back after seeing sign & well worth the u-turn. Nice museum relating Florida history, from native peoples through pioneer settlement. The grounds are very pleasant & the tour of the historic dog-trot cabin & outbuildings make for a feeling that one has stepped back in time. Great picnic spot.

Nice exhibits of how the forestry industry began. The pioneer homestead was very interesting and informative also.

What a neat little museum! The grounds are well kept and the exhibits are simple but engaging. The small exhibit hall has a bunch of information about the history of the area and the then booming Cypress industry.

I have been to the Forest Capital Museum many times and it is quite interesting. It is very interesting to see how people in this area lived 100 years ago.

A real Cracker homestead. Well maintained. Small entrance fee. LOTS of history. Very photographic place. A great place to bring the family.

This place is an inexpensive and interesting treat to kill a couple of hours...not something you really want to go out of your way to visit...but if you are in the area and have some free time, there are interesting exhibits for all ages.

The picnic pavilions were the perfect spot to have lunch. We picked up some food at a grocery store in a town south of Perry and were able to eat outside in spite of the heat thanks to the shade of the trees and cover of the pavilion.
