‪So we drove an hour on December 3, 2023 at 1:00 to visit the McLarty Museum and we arrived at a closed gate with no explanation. We called and we got an answering machine! Could you update your website when you are closed to not mislead us!‬

‪Worth the $2 fee ‬

‪So glad we visited. We learned so much about the history of shipwrecks along the treasure coast. Great displays and artifacts as well as a film that puts it all in perspective. Upstairs is a great view.‬

‪Interesting Museum of the Shipwreck of the Spanish Fleet of 1715‬

‪The museum is located where at least one of the eleven ships from the Spanish Fleet, in 1715, sank in a hurricane. Around 1500 men, women and children survived and set up camp where the museum is located. Inside, there are exhibits of silver, shards of pottery replicas of gold coins, cuttery ,etc. that have been recovered from the shipwrecks. It isn't a large museum, but is interesting. Unfortunately, we arrived late and weren't able to see the film about the shipwrecks. There is a boardwalk outside, with information about the native plants in the area and a lookout toward the ocean, where the ship went down. Worth seeing, but they close at 4:00 and there is a 45 minute film, so come early enough to see the film and the exhibits.‬

‪Interesting museum - not much to see but hearing the story of the shipwreck and history makes it worth wild‬

‪The museum was interesting in hearing the story about the shipwreck and the background. I would recommend watching the film before looking at the exhibits. The film was very interesting but a little too long, it could be edited to make it shorter. There are some exhibits but not very much to see. The entrance is $2. The observation deck has nice views onto the beach.‬

‪We brought kids, parents and grandparents and everyone loved it. Loved having a hands on experience with some of the artifacts and the personal explanations and discussions with the knowledgeable staff. Would absolutely recommend this to others and the $2 admission makes this a very affordable family excursion.‬

‪A whole lot lot history is packed into this small museum, and Corey (our Docent for the morning) was most helpful in sharing with us the history of Florida's Treasure Coast, The 1715 Hurricane and the five Spanish ships loaded with treasure that were to be brought back to Spain as a dowry for a bride. that crashed upon the area of The Sebastian Inlet, to Vero Beach, to Fort Pierce.
He explained in detail, the trade routes established during the 17th century throughout the 18th century, among The Far East, The Americas, and Europe.‬

‪McLarty Museum...a hidden Vero treasure!‬

‪Corey...or Turtle as his friends call him is passionate about the museum's history. He isn't shy about sharing everything he knows about the people and the history. From the accumulation of the treasures lost on the sunken ships to the people who came later in search of the sunken treasures...ask Turtle anything and he knows the answer. The artifacts and the movie were worth the time investment of time.‬
