We live locally and have been to the Museum many times. It is one of our daughter's favourite places to visit.
This time we went for the Mission Christmas event, which was fantastic - lots of crafts; animals to pet - our daughter practised her shepherding skills by walking a sheep! A trail to follow and of course a visit to see Father and Mrs Christmas - both were brilliant, really engaging with the children as were all of the elf helpers throughout the museum.
We found time to squeeze in a visit to the mining gallery and our daughter and her cousin played in the mine lift and tunnel, which is their favourite part of the museum.
It is an absolute travesty that the council are thinking of closing the Museum down. It is full of so many interesting exhibits about local and mining history, it hosts community groups and regular exhibitions and runs events like the one we attended all year round, making great use of the connection to the countryside on Hednesford Hills too.
The staff are wonderful, without exception, friendly and engaging. I hope the local community and staff are successful in fighting these plans and showing the council's bean-counters that not everything can be measured in pounds and pence - the heritage, education, nature and community contribution that the Museum makes is worth far more than it costs to run.

The Museum of Cannock Chase is situated just over half a mile from Hednesford on foot.
It is a pleasant walk there through Hednesford Park.
The museum is primarily concerned with the old mining industry which was highly prevalent in the local area.
There are lots of interesting displays about coal mining which are mainly aimed at children.
Nevertheless I enjoyed the recreation of a miner’s cottage and conditions down the pit.
The local football team Hednesford Town, who were formed in 1880 used to finish work in the mine at 2 pm on Saturdays and kick off at 4.30 pm in the lighter months.
There is also large collection of toys throughout the ages and their history. I particularly liked the old Airfix kits.
A collection of pencil drawings from Marie Macdonald is currently being exhibited and her natural history pictures are particularly good.
Admission is free.

This is one of the best local museums I have visited. It gives you all the information you would want to know about the area. The ground floor has many descriptive panels.
On the first floor there is a recreation of a second world war sitting room and a miners cottage. There is a gallery devoted to mining and one to toys.
It took me one hour to go round.

As a local resident, I popped into the Museum this Sunday to check out the village fete. Press Books & Coffee had a stall there, there were cream teas sold by the museum building, and it's been years since I've seen a maypole and a Punch and Judy show! Other stalls included a hippy shop, a fragrance stall, a Cats Protection tombola, a toy stall and a fortune-teller. In the exhibition space in the museum, Matt Sayers (who is the current exhibitor) was working on a new charcoal drawing.
The only part I missed were the competition entries (for flower arranging and baking) - from the photos I've seen on facebook, it looks as if it was in the conference room which is hard to spot unless its outside doors are open. My ticket also wasn't checked on entry; not sure if the car-park volunteers were meant to do this, but the only critique I have is that perhaps there should've been a welcome booth explaining the location of various things.
The event was definitely geared more towards kids (as it would be), but it was still good to have a mooch 'round and say hello to people. The Friends of Hednesford were looking for volunteers and distributing job descriptions and cards as they look to establish a Community Hub near the station - their mini Hogwarts Express puffing around the stall certainly drew a crowd!
The highlight of my visit was the Punch and Judy - the bloke behind it (Clive Chandler) was very witty and the timing of the puppetry made for a chaotic, fab show. The audience benches were full throughout! I also got to see the maypole dancing; it was a tutorial rather than a demonstration but there were reps from the Cannock folk-dance committee present too.
A fun way to spend a couple of hours on a warm Sunday afternoon.

Lovely find on the Hednesford Hill Nature Reserve. Small and compact with lots of history of the mining past plus a toy museum area. Little coffee shop with hot and cold drinks and some small cakes/biscuits. Outside seating area. Cannot take dogs into museum.

It's been a while since I've come over to the museum, but after an advert came through on social media about this exhibition I had to come over and check it out! The museum is normally free but this particular event had a £4 entrance fee.
Nature's Burrow had a lovely little exhibition in the annexe with Luna the Barn Owl, Loki the Harris Hawk, and Twyla and Athena - a Tawny Owl and a Little Owl who are utterly inseparable. You couldn't see Athena at first, she was huddled up so close to her friend! The birds were all relaxed and calm, and you could even hold Luna (and Loki, if you were brave!). Human skin-oils can damage owl feathers so no petting allowed, but Nature's Burrow did have some examples of loose feathers on their desk in case any curious little hands wanted to feel how soft they were.
West Midlands Bird Club were by the Reception area and I had a lovely chat with the bloke manning the stall on the local birds spotted in the Chase across the year - he was super knowledgeable and friendly. They held a small competition to see how many birds you could name just from pictures; I couldn't get many but had a few good guesses!
Staffordshire Wildlife Trust were in the annexe foyer with some beautiful photographs of our local fauna and full of recommendations for walks including the local Wolseley Centre, which has recently been refurbished.
Chelmarsh Bird Ringing's demo was sadly cancelled due to the blustery weather but some representatives were still on hand in the conference room to talk about their work. There were plenty of craft tables on too for the kids, including clay owls and bracelet making.
Elsewhere in the museum, my 2022 comment of 'small but perfectly formed' still stands in 2024. There's a great exhibition on from local photographer Luke Unsworth about the local collieries - worth checking out especially if you're from a coal-mining family. The gift shop has been updated too, there's a lovely range of gifts and souvenirs including prints and postcards.
Check what's on, and drop by - definitely worth a visit.

it's a small museum but it is a really very good museum and best of all it is free to enter and the parking is free also. I took my mother a few times before she passed away and she always enjoyed the time spent there and said she remembered everything in the museum and even when she listened to the audio in the museum. I can not relate to it in the same way that she did, but I did enjoy the times I went their with her and it opened up a great conversation of times passed

Free admission, learn about local history, toy room for kids to play, interactive zones. Cant complain. . A couple of hours out the rain. Just wish cafe had more to offer, like lunch items (sandwiches etc). The more people visit, the more the facilities will grow.
