Amazing place !
I discovered it by accident a couple of years ago without knowing what it really was .
So visited last weekend on our way to Portmerion.
Very confusing! Gates all seemed locked and car park ticket machine wrapped up for winter.
Luckily a very helpful custodian was in the house , so we got to see that as well as the gardens.
A must!

Lovely gardens to spend a couple of hours walking around. Some great topiary. Cafe was great for lunch. Varied menu. On the way out you must not miss the amazing folly. Up a few steps by the car park leads you to a four storey stone structure built as a wedding present.

Perfection. If you’re expecting plenty of plants, maybe a little disappointing, if you love superb design, this is spectacular. Wonderfully connected “garden rooms” each with gorgeous views of the landscape. Very, very clever man, that Clough. Don’t miss the tower folly!

The garden is very interesting with many small rooms flanked by Yew and Box hedges. Each room has its own focal point which could be a statue or a mountain. Very well kept and a pleasure to walk around.
The cafe was good too. We had lovely salads with a delicious cucumber pickle.

A little hidden gem of a garden. So peaceful and very well kept. Gorgeous views of the mountains. Cafe was closed but looked nice. Toilets and good parking, pay and display. Walks in the woods too. An honesty box on the back of the gate if no one is in the cafe. Rhs members get in free.

One of a few Grade 1 listed gardens in N Wales, Plas Brondanw, provides a horticultural legacy of garden structure that Sir Clough Williams Ellis made to his family home. Avenues, pathways, terraces each are aligned to the mountain peak of ‘Y Cnicht’ whose Matterhorn like peak lies near to the home. Statues, topiary with extravagant pinnacles bring contrast to lead the eye to another apex. The terraced lawn is dominated by an aged holm oak, and a mixed border of apple trees and perennials runs the length of the lower terrace. A charming orangerie displays the classic CWE style as does the much photographed arched lodge near the entrance. The house is now open to the public displaying an exhibition of the creative artwork and ceramics of the talented family. The cafe provides an excellent place for a light lunch, where fresh ingredients shine, and local seeded bread makes a perfect match.

These gardens are well worth a visit if you have an interest in Portmeirion. As a bonus the house was open at the visit and is well worth a look with an art display currently on.
The parking situation had changed since I visited previously. There is a pay and display meter and it says £2 charge card only refundable at the cafe with a ticket. I went through the process as best I could (instructions are in Welsh). I did not get a parking ticket same as the people before me. When I mentioned this on entry at the cafe I didn't get a clear response. Some people I met in the car park who made purchases in the cafe said they got a refund (maybe they were wrong?). Looking at my statement I do not appear to have been charged but the whole process is confusing and needs to be sorting out. Not sure why they are charging for parking since you have to pay for entry.

Regrettably the website for the gardens and Historic Houses were not accurate about the opening times. We originally felt the gardens were closed as there was no sign of life. However, bolder folk tried the gate and let us know we could go in. As we had historic houses membership the visit was free. We trust others paid using the honesty box in the reverse of the gate.
The garden is divided into multiple rooms with views into the distant mountains and sculptures around every corner. A huge assortment of hydrangeas with different forms and colours frames one garden border and well maintained topiary other margins.
Across the road a walk through woodland leads to a 100 year old tower, built as a folly, but elaborated during WW11 to act as a defence tower and now offering spectacular panoramic vistas of the area.

This was a return visit to a garden that made a great impression when we first visited some years ago. Our return visit on a beautifully clear summer's day did not disappoint.
The garden really is exquisite. It is not one for plantsmen, but as an architectural creation in the classical tradition it is one of the finest and thre are probably no better examples of borrowed views than the way the avenues and hedges here are aligned to frame the surrouding peaks to give one of the finest views of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and especially of Knicht ("the Welsh Matterhorn").
A visit here is balm to the soul!

Great small garden to visit with wonderful views of Snowdonia framed by the gorgeous Portmeirion blue gates and with lovely buildings.

Hello: This is the notice on the Plas Brondanw website about winter opening:-
Plas Brondanw Cafe will be closing its doors for the Winter on September 30th.
We would like to thank everyone that visited us this year for your continued support. It has been a very successful year.
I would like to emphasize that the gardens remain open all year round and access can be gained through the big blue gate to the right of the cafe doors, on the other side of which is an honesty box for admissions.
Also, please keep an eye on our news page for any upcoming events, such as special food evenings.
We look forward to welcoming everyone back in the Spring, so until then……..all the best……

Yes it is dog friendly. Dogs however are not allowed in the cafe, but the big irony is that this is where you pay to get in.
