‪We had a fantastic afternoon being shown around by the very knowledgeable Les. All the volunteers are very friendly and devote a lot of time to the upkeep of the museum. There is still a lot of work to be done but it is still well worth a visit. We will be going back at the end of the month to see the big engine running and hopefully to have a ride on the little train.‬

‪Our 9 Yr old Granddaughter is studying coal mining at school and wanted to find out more so off we went.

The website didn't really do it justice.

There's an Engine House with a massive steam engine (that didn't grip her, but maybe a return visit when it is running would do).

Then we went to the mine worker's cottage where we met Marilyn, one of the volunteers. She told Esmé lots about life as a miner, dressed her up in appropriate clothes and set her to 'darning socks'. She was really fascinated by everything she was told and also by the bedroom upstairs. NB the stairs are narrow, steep and nof for everyone.

We also went to the Lamphouse where we met another of the volunteers who had worked as a miner. That was interesting, he demonstrated how the lamps worked and explained the role of canaries, including how they were revived after doing their job.

We also had a look at the miniature railway, which only runs on special days, check on website.

There's a cafe facility and a small gift shop. As far as I understand it it's all run by volunteers, which explains the limited opening hours.

Really well worth a visit, though if you're a fan of Margaret Thatcher, "I'd keep your gob shut!"‬

‪Our 4th visit to Astley Green. There is always something new to see. Run by volunteers and worthy of support. Gift shop and refreshments.‬

‪I went during the bank holiday weekend for the annual plant sale. I felt compelled to write a review as all the staff were so incredibly friendly. From the gentleman in the overflow carpark (so kind and chatty, plus he later helped me carry plants to my car), the women at the plant stall (all so helpful) and the staff around the grounds who were all so happy and polite. The plant sale was excellent, I bought 3 large beautiful hanging baskets and loads of bedding plants. While there I had a look around the museum, the size of the machinery was incredible. They also had a little train running for the kids. This museum is free to enter. If I had to find one criticism, I would say within the grounds there some areas which look a little unkept cordoned off with fencing or covered in tarpaulin. However, its a great place, its free and worth a visit if in the area. Tip: on a busy day or event day use the overflow carpark, its usually signposted on such days and is the field immediately behind so it is no further to walk plus a lot less stressful then trying to get down the narrow streets to the main entrance.‬

‪We visited from America and were in search of my husband's ancestry, as my husband's Great Great Grandfather was a miner in Manchester. The tour guides went above and beyond in the tour they gave us. Marilyn immersed us in the culture of the miner's life by dressing us in costume in the Miner's Cottage. We felt we went back in time to understand their hard life. We were so lucky to be there on a day that the engine room was operating with a demonstration of the pulleys built in 1910 that lowered the miners into the pits! Amazing! Les explained how the massive machinery worked. Billy showed us the Miner's lamps and described their work day. The museum had so much information and we spent a long time there and learned so much. Les even contacted my husband after we left with additional information about my Husband's GG Grandfather's actual Mining Site. Plan to spend at least 2 hrs there to learn all that is on display and you'll leave with such an appreciation of generations that went before us to ensure our warmth and industrial technology improvements. We also left with a handmade Lancashire Rose from the Gift shop that we hung on our Christmas Tree, and my husband enjoys his new mug showing the Mine. I would highly recommend this Museum to anyone.‬

‪Very disappointing visit. It’s basically a scrapyard full of abandoned machinery. It needs a more professional approach, clear sense of purpose, better layout, more signage and information and the tearoom is just a tick shop. ‬

‪I have visited many times, they have various events over the year, advertised on their Facebook page 'Lancashire Mining Museum'.
It is a testament to the Lancashire mining industry with the last remaining pit head of the Lancashire Coal Field (which must be preserved for future generations). The recreated miner's cottage shows the reality of how they used to live, the huge winding engine is the biggest machine I have ever seen - a behemoth of early 1900s engineering and one of the biggest working winding engines remaining anywhere in the world! The reconstructed railway, with renovated ex-mines trains and converted mines 'man riders' are worth the ride and experience. The site has numerous exhibits from the mining industry over the years and is a day you will want to repeat again and again.

Overall, this is a great place to see our mining heritage and experience how a 'working' pit used to operate. By far, it's greatest asset are it's volunteers who will welcome you with friendly greetings, answer your questions and guide you through all of their exhibits.

Visit on the last Sunday of the month to be sure to see the trains and winding engine running.‬

‪This mine, and all the others, were the engine house of GB as a global leader. The people who worked ripping coal out of the bowels of the earth made this country.
Excellent view into how it all worked.
Engine House No1 was a great display when it all starts to move!
The miners cottage was a great recreation of the living conditions at the time.
Run by enthusiasts who were all helpful and friendly.‬

‪We visited the museum today with my 83yo mum. I wasn't sure what to expect, but we all had a great time. What makes this place so special is the volunteers. They all seem to love it and really welcome you in. You end up feeling like part of the family, even if it's only for a couple of hours or so. To be honest, we spent most of our time chatting, but the winding engine really is a beautiful and very impressive piece of engineering. I'd like to go back on a weekend when it's running. The headstock is also an iconic structure. It deserves to be preserved. When millions can be raised to stop oil paintings leaving the country, it's a shame more money isn't available to save our industrial heritage.
Next weekend (17/6) is a steam weekend, with brass bands etc. If we didn't have to go home, I'd definitely make a return visit. It's a fantastic little museum with a great community spirit.‬
