We've taken the tour multiple times and seem to discover something new with each visit. The home is beautifully restored with many of the original furnishings and decor in place. The home gives the tourist a taste of how Chicago's elite lived during the Gilded Age. This is more than a typical museum. This is a magnificent home restoration.

Our first visit to the Driehaus included a guided tour. Eric did a great job. The Christmas lights on a cloudy afternoon were magical

The fabled Castle, the one-time home of Potter and Honore Palmer on North Lake Shore Drive, is long gone. So are many of Prairie Avenue's historic mansions. But the Richard H. Driehaus Museum still is open to the public, a classic reminder of America's Gilded Age, Located at 40 East Erie Street, at Wabash, near the Magnificent Mile, on Chicago's Near North Side, it is housed within the historic Samuel M. Nickerson House, the 1883 residence of a wealthy Chicago banker. The museum, replete with marble, onyx, carved exotic and domestic woods, glazed tiles and stained glass, does not re-create the Nickerson mansion but rather broadly interprets and displays the prevailing design, architecture and decorating tastes of the Gilded Age. On display are original furnishings from the Nickerson era along with American and European decorative arts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including a number of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany. The museum is named after its founder, Richard H. Driehaus, a Chicago businessman, philanthropist and art collector. At the time of its completion in 1883, the mansion was reportedly the most expensive and elaborate private residence in Chicago, having cost $450,000. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and designated a Chicago Historic Landmark in 1977. It was opened to the public in 2008. In addition to the Tiffany works, the Driehaus collection includes over 1,500 objects, including furniture, vases and Favrile glass.

This was our second visit to the Driehaus Museum when visiting Chicago. This house museum is amazing! From the moment you enter the house and into the marble entrance hall, you will be mesmerized! We wandered through each and every room in the house to enjoy the Gilded Age splendour....the fireplaces, the ceilings, the decor, the library/gallery, and the glass ceiling dome. On our first visit, we enjoyed a special Tiffany exhibition of pieces collected by Mr. Driehaus. Note that there are always Tiffany pieces to be seen throughout the house. On this visit we saw the Capturing Louis Sullivan: What Richard Nickel Saw exhibit, and it was worth making the time to see. So interesting!! Our first visit was at Christmas; if you enjoy the Christmas holidays, a visit is in order!

I have visited this museum approximately three times. Most recently, I was here November 17. I was so impressed with the exhibit and information about Richard Nickel. One of the volunteers did a great job of answering my questions. The video about Richard Nickel was intriguing and sad as well. I plan to return! The museum is located behind the Omni Chicago Hotel where I stay each time that I visit. I recommend this museum to anyone looking for something unique to see!

Stepping through the main entrance is a jaw-dropping experience. This entire former home is filled with exquisite artworks, lights, inlaid wood and other treasures. It was informative and friendly.
I also enjoyed the exhibition upstairs "Capturing Louis Sullivan: What Richard Nickel Saw". It was a real bonus.

Loved,, loved, loved this home from the guilded age. It is beautifully restored to its original elegance. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, well worth the extra $5. We have been to a lot of historical homes. This was clearly one of the most beautiful. Cheers to Chicago!

We were at the Starbucks Reserve and were looking for a museum to visit and found the Driehaus Museum literally a block away. It has a lot of early Chicago architecture history and displays.
Everyone in our party thought it was very cool.

Can you please tell me, for what purpose were the brass cups in the Nautilus shells around the bottom of the Tiffany lamp designed? Thank you.

Are we allowed to take prom pictures in the museum? It won’t be a big group, just two to three people
Any professional photography sessions must be arranged with our private events office.

Would someone who knows nothing about architecture learn a lot from this museum? Or is it mostly an example of good architecture that could be appreciated by architecture enthusiasts?

It’s somewhat about architecture but mostly is a great example of a “gilded age home” where everything was opulent. On the main floor, each room is furnished as it would have been when the house was in its original glory. There are pieces of artwork, displays of luxury, and just some really WOW stuff, like the dome in the art room. So it’s a nice blend of architectural elements with non-architectural elements. It’s more like a visual walk-through than a dive into architecture, though. I left feeling “wow, that house was amazing and I’m so glad I paid to take the tour”, rather than “wow, I know a ton more about architecture now”. (I know nothing about architecture.) The second and third floors have rotating displays. Hope this helps!

Hi! I will be coming there with a group of seniors. Is there a place for a 12 passenger bus to park?

You should be able to find public parking nearby. Probably not on the street, but in a parking structure. There are websites that will show you available parking, that you can search for on the internet. Just use keywords such as "parking" and the zip code of the museum in your search engine, and many sites that show available parking will pop up.
