‪Memories of Glessner House--and Jack Simmerling, too‬
مايو 2021
‪My wife and I are longtime financial supporters of Glessner House. And of the Jack Simmerling Room, which is a part of the Glessner Museum. Simmerling, like us, was born and raised in south suburban Blue Island. An accomplished artist, he founded a gallery on 115th Street in Beverly and was noted for his paintings of Chicago. We have another of his best works, the Ruins of Windsor, a reflection of a famous Civil War plantation house in near Port Gibson, Mississippi, hanging in our library. Located at 1800 South Prairie Avenue on Chicago's near South Side, in the Prairie Avenue Historic District, Glessner House is an architecturally important 19th century residence that was designed in 1885-1886 by architect Henry Hobson Richardson and completed in late 1887. It was designated a Chicago Landmark and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and acclaimed a National Historic Landmark in 1976. Constructed in what is known as the Richardsonian Romanesque style, the building took elements of European Romanesque architecture from buildings constructed in the 11th and 12th centuries and adapted them to American idioms. The innovative floor plan and interior design, which allows for a spacious courtyard within, was distinctly different from other mansions on Prairie Avenue. The house was opened for public tours in 1971. Many of the rooms have been restored to their original appearance and the collection of decorative objects and furnishings is especially significant.‬

‪Experience a glimpse of Chicago's Gilded Age!‬
ديسمبر 2019
‪Ever on the hunt for something interesting to see in Chicago, having visited there at least a dozen times through the years, I came across this architectural gem by Richardson that gives visitors a peek at the Gilded Age life in Chicago. The Glessner House tells the history of one family in a time of industrial growth and personal prosperity. With original furnishings and personal belongings, it is unique in sharing the family's legacy. Our tour guide was outstanding in telling the story and answering questions for nearly 90 minutes. To become more immersed, walk up and down Prairie Avenue to see some of the other remaining original houses and the in-fill houses built in the style of the times. Truly a must-see gem!!‬

‪Good tour with out of town guests‬
الأصدقاء • يناير 2020
‪Had friends visiting over the holidays and we went on a group tour, lasted about 1 1/2 hours. The house has many of the original family furnishings. Beautiful. The tour guide had a lot of knowledge about the home and the family. Very interesting but few places to sit, a long time to stand.‬

‪Wonderful History & Architecture‬
ديسمبر 2019
‪Got to do the 2 hour architecture tour of the building prior to Christmas. House was in wonderful condition and the tour guide was extremely informative. A great glimpse of how the wealthy lived in Chicago back in the 1880's. I'd strongly recommend this tour (or the shorter tour) to anyone with an interest in history.‬

‪A visual taste of Chicago‬
ديسمبر 2019
‪If you want to know more about architecture, history or Chicago, be sure to pay a visit. A most knowledgeable and affable architect guided us on a recent 2-hour behind-the-scenes tour of the house and we were impressed by what we saw. The imposing stone exterior gives no clue about what one will see inside. After visiting, take a gambol around the Prairie Ave.neighborhood and visit the Second Presbyterian Church a few blocks away for a look at its Tiffany windows and huge arts and crafts worship space. We were staying at The Blackstone in the south Loop and walked here since it was only a little more than a mile away.‬

‪Interesting‬
ديسمبر 2019
‪This place is located on the south side of Chicago. Since we were staying on the west side, it took forever to get there because of Chicago traffic. The tour was interesting, and the house is furnished nicely. Our guide was very informative and friendly. Not a must see, but worth a stop if you are in the area.‬

‪Don't miss the Jack Simmerling Gallery‬
نوفمبر 2019
‪As historians, my wife and I have been faithful supporters of the John J. Glessner House and Museum in Chicago for several years. And we became even more interested after the Glessner House added the John J. "Jack" Simmerling Gallery of Prairie Avenue History. Simmerling grew up in south suburban Blue Island, my hometown. In fact, he lived at on one end of the block and we lived on the other. He had a small art studio in his back yard. He became a talented and successful artist and his collection of artwork and architectural artifacts detailing the story of historic Prairie Avenue's years as Chicago's most prestigious residential street in the late 19th century is displayed in the Glessner House. Of course, that's not all. Located at 1800 South Prairie Avenue, it was designed in 1885-1886 by architect Henry Hobson Richardson and completed in late 1887. It was designated a Chicago Landmark and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976. Distinctly different from all other Victorian mansions on South Prairie Avenue, the Richardson Romanesque style building was clad in huge Braggville granite with minimal ornamentation and a long servant hall and spacious private courtyard within. Opened to public tours in 1971, the interior has been restored to its original appearance with decorative objects, artwork and furnishings. For visitors, it is a fascinating look into what life was like during the Gilded Age in Chicago.‬

‪Interesting tour, but not my favorite of the weekend‬
العائلة • مايو 2019
‪I visited Chicago this past weekend with family and friends, and it turned out to be a mostly architecture visit! We toured at least 3 or 4 historic buildings, one of which was the Glessner House. I was excited about the tour, because I knew the house is considered architecturally important. However, the tour didn't really get across (at least to me) why that was the case. I understood that the architect (Henry Hobson Richardson) was influential and died young and that many architects were inspired by the house (including Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright), but not why the building was important or inspired other architects. I can't say I found the house beautiful, but the tour was interesting (you do learn quite a bit about the Glessner family, who seemed like very interesting people). Because they only offer a few guided tours at certain times each day (and no self-guided tours), our tour was quite large, and it was a little difficult to fit in every room and to stay on the gray runners (as a very short person, I couldn't always see very much either). All in all, the tour was interesting, but not my favorite of the weekend.‬
